the thing they tell you in 9th grade civics that the checks and balances were designed to prevent oppression by the majority of the minority was true but it was done to protect the ruling majority (the rich) from "the mob" (slaves, indentured servants, women, people who work for a living, etc) none of this particularly new. its all right in the loving federalist papers how the senate and the electoral college are good because they let men of standing control the government and make sure the mob wont do anything uncouth like free the slaves
