The electoral college was created to ensure slaveholders got extra representation for their slaves who were not allowed to vote, that is just historical fact. And it continues to incentivize voter suppression to this day because states that disenfranchise their population don't lose any influence in the government as they would if the presidency were popularly elected. Any changes we made now that would benefit progressives in the short term would be abused by conservatives in the long term. Maybe on the national level I could agree that the EC has to go but at the state level "majority rules" is not a good thing and my original point was about democracy. We already have states effectively banning abortions and as soon as racist majorities are allowed to vote to legalize lynchings they'll do it.

in my lifetime, I've seen 4 people win a non-incumbent Presidential election, and only seen 2 of them get inaugurated the EC is a trash system designed to empower slavers, it should be abolished absolutely as it serves absolutely no purpose Any argument that people living in huge uninhabitable states need 300x the representation should be reframed as a demand to explain why someone from California should have 1/300th

The only way abolishing the EC would help a Republican win is if the parties realigned again and the Republicans became the champion of the working class and minorities as they were in Lincoln's day, because the EC gives disproportionate influence to the rich and powerful by design.
