Holy poo poo, Bill DeBlasio with a straight up, clear, unambiguous “Bernie Would Have Won” on the Brian Lehrer show this morning. https://overcast.fm/+Ky0NwUw/08:54 (Starts around the 9 minute mark. Also, if you don’t listen to Brian Lehrer in general, and the mayor weekly in particular, you’re doing your understanding of NY politics a major disservice.)

if they're smart/normal/not evil they'll sell both oysteralikes and tickets, using the hardware the turnstiles should hypothetically already have to accept lirr/mta/nj transit tickets and simplify station layouts. handle it like tokyo does for jr local/intercity/metro/private railways where why would you NOT buy a suica but if the answer is 'yoshiwara on friday night while the wife thinks i'm at a business dinner' there's a solution for you. otoh if they were any of the three metrocard would never have been metrocard. and yeah metrocard is already tracked and logged, the pass-from-pretax-income program packages up a report for your employer the technical card owner about when and where you've been.

Anne Whateley posted:wtf? wtf? wtf? I'm pretty good about reading small print and I definitely don't remember that. Easypay just logs it in the account interface which the employer is free to set up because they administer it as a benefit. It's also publicly available for realtime scraping by API developers or via a FOIL request if you have the card number. There's a guy over on Reddit who allegedly found his employer keeping full logs internally, and the replies are full of "oh yeah sure you can totally do that this way".

Oh, so the employer setup the account and just downloaded it because it's something the account holder has access to. That's like saying "my employer setup my gmail account and has the password and can ready every email I send!!!" That's pretty different from inplying employers can track every MetroCard. Presumably wageworks and such this wouldn't happen because you buy your own MetroCard with the credit card thing.

Correct, if you buy your own through credit added on Wageworks and the employer doesn't get a receipt which happens to include the card number, you're fine. If the employer buys it directly rather than buying you Wageworks credit, which is possible through other suppliers, or if the card number is supplied to the employer, trips can easily be tracked.

I guess my quibble is saying that employers regularly track transit "benefits". Reddit dude had a card given to him by his job because his job involved riding the subway all day, it wasn't his personal commuter card pretax or otherwise. It's analogous to an employer keepimg track of tollbooth receipts from company cars. Now, if the MTA will just hand out trip history to anyone with a metrocard number and no other verification or legal order, that's a different and more concerning privacy / stalker risk (because people don't consider the back of their metrocard a sensitive thing). I can't find anything that suggests they'll give you that without a legal order aside from one dude on reddit who was like "yeah API probably has it I bet".

Our Socialist Party local met with Howie Hawkins today. He’s seeking our endorsement for his run for NY governor on the Green Party ticket. He’s actually been a member of the Socialist Party since 1973; he’s running on the Green Party ticket as they actually have ballot access. He’s been trying to shift the Green Party further left, but so far there’s only some vague socialist stuff in their charter. If we could somehow manage enough signatures, he’d be happy to also run on a Socialist ticket. Howie’s platform is a lot more progressive than Cynthia’s; she doesn’t even appear to be running as an open socialist according to her website. As one of the ultimate goals of the left should be to build an independent left party, I think the left should embrace Hawkins over Nixon, whose run is also very much a long shot. At this point, it seems like groups like DSA and Socialist Alternative are moving towards endorsing Nixon unfortunately. http://www.howiehawkins.org/ edit: according to a questionnaire that Nixon filled out, she’s not willing to run openly as a democratic socialist, just with “democratic socialist values”. p weak sauce stuff Rated PG-34 has issued a correction as of 02:54 on Jul 1, 2018 |

And there are people debating endorsing Nixon in NYC DSA, true, but knowing the people pushing for it, the endorsement process, and the timeline....I really, truly doubt it will happen. That said, chapters elsewhere in the state might. I think Buffalo is already tweeting about her actually. edit: I didn't even know she submitted a questionnaire yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was since the AOC victory, and I haven't paid attention to anything else since
