First off he is the most annoying Browns sports media personalities. He consistently refers to the Browns as the #100yearswar in his tweets and like all sports writers, really has no clue what the gently caress he is talking about. Whenever someone even challenges his viewpoint on twitter instead of engaging them or ignoring them, he will retweet them with something along the lines, "Welcome to the Ex-Files or another in the Ex-Files" It is stupid, Douchey and annoying.

Finally as Leperfish posted he was super critical of Baker Mayfield comparing him to Manziel. While Manziel was known as a party guy that completely lost control Mayfield is more akin to a Jay Cutler that works hard. He just gives no fucks about the media.

Also he lets Gregg Williams Steamroll him in press conferences just to show how worthless he is

Cops Who Interacted with Michael Bennett

seiferguy posted:

This is a weird one and I know in the past we've had discussions on whether or not we should include them but I want to nominate the law enforcement officers that interacted with Michael Bennett. Specifically the Las Vegas and Houston police departments. Las Vegas ones tied him down for solely being a big black man, then had that crazy weird flag humping press conference. The Houston one threw bogus charges at him for charging a disabled usher, without specifics, called him morally corrupt and had another flag humping session.

I don't know much about this one. Googling turns up a lot of stories about Bennett's indictment and arrest for allegedly injuring a disabled person while attempting to enter the play field after the end of the super bowl to go congratulate his brother. Most of these stories simply report what the Houston police stated about the case.

There are lots of lovely opinions, too, and some reporting on them:

https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/seahawks/reactions-to-michael-bennett-arrest-warrant-shows-that-facts-dont-matter/

quote:

As soon as word of former Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett’s felony arrest warrant came down Friday, outkickthecoverage.com’s Clay Travis — who has been critical of Bennett for months — took to Twitter to gloat.

“Lying, race-baiting fraud Michael Bennett indicted for felony charge involving injury of an elderly paraplegic person,” Travis tweeted. “NFL man of the year locked up for 2018.”

Just a few minutes later, Intercept writer and Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King weighed in with a different point of view.

“Sure. An officer saw Michael Bennett brutally assault a sweet old woman, said nothing, did nothing, then they decided to charge him with felony assault …14 months later,” King tweeted. “BOGUS.”

Not long after, former ESPN reporter and self-proclaimed conservative Britt McHenry tossed her thoughts into the Twitterverse.

“Michael Bennett is a proven race-baiting liar. But liberals propped him up as ‘Man of the Year’ & gave him an SI cover,” McHenry wrote. “Now, THEY’RE STILL DEFENDING HIM. Hurting an elderly paraplegic somehow isn’t that bad? It’s insane. But keep blaming police officers.”

And then Tariq Nasheed, a black film producer and media personality, dove into the fray.

“They are putting this bogus charge on Michael Bennett to send a message to OTHER Black NFL players to stop calling out white supremacy, or they will use the system of white supremacy to target other Black players who get too ‘uppity,’ ” Nasheed tweeted.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the world in which we live. Scroll through social media, and you’ll find countless examples highlighting such division on this topic. And I’m not talking about trolls with 43 followers and a picture of Uncle Rico as their avatars. I’m talking about some of the well-established, respected media members in the country.

What’s crazy about this is we don’t know what Bennett actually did. During a news conference Friday, Houston police chief Art Acevedo said Bennett had forced his way onto the NRG Stadium field after his brother’s Patriots beat the Falcons in the Super Bowl in February 2017. Acevedo added that Bennett had sprained a 66-year-old paraplegic security officer’s shoulder upon pushing her and later told a police officer: “Y’all must not know who I am. I can own this mother (expletive). I’m going onto the field whether you like it or not.”

The thing is … there is no known video of the incident. And it took 14 months for him to be indicted. And we still haven’t heard a word from Bennett.

It’s a nebulous situation, but that didn’t stop the takes from rolling in.
Tweeted right-wing commentator and “From Democrat to Deplorable” author Jack Murphy: “Michael Bennett, the NFL player who lied about being racially profiled at gunpoint by police, sits during the Anthem and became a hero of Black Lives Matter, was indicted on felony charges today for assaulting an elderly paraplegic female stadium worker. Justice.”

Tweeted ESPN broadcaster Cari Champion in response to the allegations: “No Way. No how. I’m not buying it. I’m sorry but I’m calling foul. Never met a more generous and kind person off the field.”

Pretty sure you get the point by now. This is not about Michael Bennett. This is about people’s world views and their need to protect them.

This article is of course some kind of "perhaps the truth is in the middle" bullshit but regardless, I have no idea what happened or whether Bennett is innocent or guilty.

As for the earlier incident:
https://www.seattletimes.com/sports...dering-lawsuit/

quote:

Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett said he was a victim of excessive force and racial profiling by Las Vegas police during an incident Aug. 27, adding that he was held on the ground with a gun to his head.

“It was a traumatic experience for me and my family,” Bennett said Wednesday before practice at the Seahawks’ facility in Renton. “It sucks that the country we are living in now sometimes you get profiled for the color of your skin.”

Bennett was in Las Vegas to attend the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight on Aug. 26.

On Wednesday morning Bennett released a statement on the incident via Twitter, alleging excessive force. Bennett has retained Oakland civil-rights attorney John Burris and is considering legal options, including filing a federal civil-rights lawsuit, according to a separate press release Wednesday.

Bennett also called on the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to release the names of the officers involved as well as “body camera videos of the incident.”

During a news conference Wednesday, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department undersheriff Kevin McMahill said race was not a a factor in the incident.

“I see no evidence that race played any role in this incident,” McMahill said.

McMahill said the incident began when officers responded to reports of a possible active shooter at the Cromwell Casino on Las Vegas Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. Aug. 27.

In the statement he released Wednesday, Bennett wrote that after watching the fight he was walking back to his hotel when he heard what sounded like gun shots and ran away from the sound. Bennett wrote he was then singled out for “simply being a black man’’ and ordered to the ground. He wrote that one officer held a gun to his head and told him he would “blow my (expletive) head off.” Another officer, Bennett wrote, jammed his knee into Bennett’s back so hard “it was difficult for me to breathe.”

Bennett said he was released only when officers recognized who he was but added that he was not given a reason for having been apprehended.

“I was ultimately released without any legitimate justification for the Officers’ abusive conduct,” Bennett wrote.

During his news conference McMahill said Bennett was spotted “crouched down behind a gaming machine as the officers approached. Once Bennett was in the officers’ view he quickly ran out of the south doors, jumped over a wall onto Flamingo Road East of Las Vegas Boulevard into traffic. Due to Bennett’s actions and the information officers had at the time they believed Bennett may have been involved in the shooting, and they gave chase.”

It goes on. Frankly again I have no idea what is the truth here. I'm inclined to believe Bennett, because racial profiling is endemic and so is excessive use of force, aggressive escalation, etc. But I'm also hesitant to take any specific case and presume that everything is clear-cut.

Anyway:
Santa Clara District Attorney Kevin Smith

Vincent Van Goatse posted:

Instead of just seconding someone else's suggestion, I'd like to propose my own: Santa Clara District Attorney Kevin Smith for trying to stitch up Reuben Foster for domestic violence when they had plenty of evidence he was clearly innocent.

Reuben Foster was arrested, charged, and tried on charges involving alleged domestic violence against his then-girlfriend Elisa Ennis, as well as a misdemeanor weapons charge (possession of a SIG Sauer 516 rifle that he had legally purchased in Alabama, but which is illegal in California) and a drug charge (possession of marijuana).

He has plead no contest, and been sentenced, on the weapons charge:
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000936007/article/reuben-foster-pleads-no-contest-to-weapons-charge

quote:

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster pleaded no contest Wednesday to a misdemeanor weapons charge stemming from his February arrest, the Santa Clara County Superior Court confirmed to NFL.com.

Foster was sentenced to two years of probation, 240 hours of community service (he's already worked eight) and $235 total in fines after his attorney entered the plea on his behalf, The Athletic's David Lombardi reported. In addition, Foster is barred from owning a gun while on probation.
...
The 24-year-old originally was facing two felony domestic violence charges and a felony weapons charge in the case before his former girlfriend recanted accusations she made against him. A judge dismissed the felony charges and reduced the weapons charge to a misdemeanor after hearing the ex-girlfriend's testimony during Foster's preliminary hearing last month.

In addition, prosecutors in Alabama dropped a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge against Foster stemming from his arrest in January.

Because he has been tried and sentenced for the weapons charge, it would be out of bounds for this contest, but that's not even relevant because Foster is not nominated. The issue is that DA Kevin Smith aggressively pursued the domestic violence charges in the face of ample evidence that he was innocent.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000934068/article/reuben-fosters-domestic-violence-charges-dismissed

quote:

California Superior Court Judge Nona Klippen determined there wasn't enough evidence for the domestic violence portion of the criminal case to move forward to a jury trial after listening to Elissa Ennis' testimony during Foster's preliminary hearing in San Jose on May 17.

The judge reduced Foster's assault weapon charge from a felony to a misdemeanor and scheduled a pre-trial hearing for June 6, according to NFL Network's Patrick Claybon. Police said they found a Sig Sauer 516 -- a semi-automatic rifle -- when searching his home prior to his February arrest.
...
Ennis testified Foster never hit her and that she made false accusations in order to extort money from him and ruin his career because she was angry over their breakup. She also testified that she went to jail in 2011 after she falsely accused another former boyfriend of domestic violence.
It is unusual for a judge to dismiss a case during pre-trial on the basis of insufficient evidence; the DA's job is to not even seek a trial until he has gathered enough evidence to meet the quite low threshhold required to move forward. In this case, the witness testifying on the stand that she lied shows the DA did not interview the witness, or discounted her testimony; and her prior conviction should have left him highly dubious of the alleged victim's reliability in the first place.

There was additional evidence the DA ignored, as well:
http://abc7news.com/sports/san-francisco-49ers-reuben-fosters-domestic-violence-case-will-not-go-to-trial/3512833/

quote:

Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies and Los Gatos-Monte Sereno police were called out to Foster's home in Los Gatos on Feb. 11 after receiving multiple 911 calls from Ennis. She initially told investigators that Foster dragged her out of the house, threw her clothes outside and "punched her in the head 8 to 10 times," causing an eardrum to rupture, according to a police report.

In a blow to prosecutors, Ennis testified she made the entire story up as part of an extortion plot. She then claimed that she had actually been injured the night before the alleged beating during a fight with two women in San Francisco after a road-rage incident. Video of that altercation was turned over to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's office and was also presented by the defense as evidence during the preliminary hearing.

The DA had this video, which was essentially proof that the injuries Ennis claimed Foster had caused her, had in fact been caused by the previous incident.

The DA wasted taxpayer money and resources pursuing a hopeless case against Foster. Why? Maybe because he's a douchebag...

Going with the cops on this. They harassed Michael Bennett in Vegas, and then trumped up charges against him halfway across the country in Houston. Additionally, Bennett is a good dude doing good things (which played no small part in his harassment by cop), including not being a dumbass and leaving an assault rifle on his bathroom floor, which makes him a more sympathetic victim.
