But the initial complaint was that the idea that the DHS might make allusions to neonazi coding in their press releases about the evils of immigration, was laughable, which the majority of the thread responded to by saying "no that's actually kind of a legitimate concern"

Thus, a suboptimal process of arriving at that point has minimal bearing on the conversation?

So unless you believe government agents are communicating secret messages in the denominators of random fractions and numbers of bullet points plus one you are a fascist? Is the idea now that Qanon and pizza gate were right all along but just not as skilled at reading the secret messages the government is slipping into our nation's fractions?

The 88 stands out because unless you know that they've actually just totally hosed up the math, it's a bizarre number to use.

When presenting a ratio, it's normal to either use the entire sample set (1837 out of 5951) or you simplify it to a small and round number like 3 out of 10.

You don't do something like "on average less than 460 out of 1488."

Shocking news: a nerd is completely unfamiliar with the idea of stunting on your haters.

Have you ever seen someone teabag somebody they killed in CounterStrike? Why would they do that? If you can figure that out,
You can figure out why neo-nazis, and even people who don’t consider themselves nazis or white supremacists but do love Trolling The Libs would do this.

It's the escalation of people that is bugging me.

The paper itself is a racist concept.

The title is suspicious.

The 88 is literally just a random actual number from some other thing. It's what the actual number is. and people trying to act like 14/88 is really suspicious would be right if it didn't say 13/88 instead.

The 14 bullet points claim is pure schizophrenia.

People can make conspiracy theories out of real things too. The border wall is a lovely racist concept. The idea that someone made 13 bullet points because they know you know that 13 means 14 and 14 means nazis is bonkers.

No I don't think that the idea that a 14-word phrase starting with "We will secure" could be a Nazi referring to the 14 words is laughable and said as much in like my second reply to you (and in pretty much every reply to everyone where I said "okay but that's not the same as changing numbers to other numbers that you want them to be"). Maybe it is a Nazi, at the very least I don't think it's automatically crazy to think it's a legitimate concern (in fact it would be a legitimate concern even if it were somehow proven to be a coincidence because even accidental Nazi symbolism should be edited once noticed!)

My criticism was confined to the post hoc theory-fitting stuff where 13 is "close enough" to 14, and instead of just going "yeah that 13 probably isn't a code number you're supposed know to increment by 1 to get the code" it's turned into this big thing, but I'm not sure we really disagree.

Nobody IN THIS THREAD that you are arguing with thinks the 13 means anything. It's just a byproduct of wrenching in 'out of 88' instead of 'out of 100' or something like ' fewer than 1 out of 10'. The 88 there COMBINED with the 14 words at the top that start 'we must secure' are the only argument anyone HERE IN THIS THREAD TALKING TO YOU is referencing. I don't care what other kooks on Twitter say, and it appears that everyone else here agrees that the 13 bullet points and 13 in the fraction are unimportant.

The 88 is the actual statistic as reported by other sources. I fully am sure nazis work in ICE and DHS, they are terrible organizations. But I am also 100% sure they do not all conspire to reject 12 out of every 100 people so they can make a cool pepe number spread across like hundreds of immigration offices working intentionally and collectively.

like that is what I am getting at, the catholic church has defended pedophiles, and is a bad organization but that isn't licence to slip down some slope of reading messages from the pope's chair. Like the title of that paper is super sketchy and you could convince me that an actual nazi intentionally made it that without doing a weird thing where you open flood gates that every aspect of the paper can now be dissected for secret hidden meanings. Like I get that 88 is a common nazi thing, but there is a lot of different numbers in that paper and not all of them are communicating secret tales to us. Or if they are, why just that one? are the others communicating messages as well and we just don't know? are there other government papers sending secret messages that you and I are just not nazi versed enough to know? Should we start a reddit subforum where we have people find and catalog these messages? Or did we just get it perfect on the first try? We know the 88 is a secret code but the number of bullet points isn't. Like a sane person reading the secret messages left by nazis in government press releases.

88% is an actual statistic, but the press release says 13 out of 88.

In order for it not to be an extremely suspect number, you have to know that they (intentionally or accidentally) hosed up the math really badly, using two percentages as the two components of a ratio.

The explanation that it's terrible math errors is quite a stretch too. I'm not aware of any direct statement by the DHS confirming that they just used the numbers incorrectly. Reuters has reported that maybe they were trying to talk about the 88%, but that's Reuters' theory.

A crime stopping plan where the plan is just "intercept and read all private communication of people not under any specific suspeicious" is a seriously horrible plan even if the crime being stopped is legitimately a bad crime.

When Facebook sent out a survey on what should be blocked by facebook in an ideal world, one of the questions was about child pornography and pedophiles grooming kids. You refused to agree that the only rational response to what should be done in an ideal world was keeping them off Facebook. You then made up the evil government agency system to try to argue against blocking pedophile activity in an ideal world. You keep trying to dump other stuff on but you were specifically against monitoring child molestor behavior in an ideal world. It's hosed, there was an easy answer on the Facebook test and it was to never allow such content. You insisted other options were valid.
