He knows people play games on consoles and they get patched when needed and it’s all good, right? Or is he admitting that even if SC released they’d be swatting “killer door” bugs every day forever?

Also while cross play is bad and puts console players at a disadvantage, I don’t see how that would be terribly relevant here. I mean, you’re supposed to play with a joystick. Why not an analogue stick?

Which reminds me, Chris saying how combat will be more “lethal” than CoD makes me confident he’s just throwing out what he knows to be “a bad dumb game for casual chads,” since in my limited experience playing CoD multiplayer, if you see someone and fire off a burst at them, they’re most likely dead.

Way lower relative health threshold than say, Halo with its shields, or Overwatch with its abundance of escape abilities and solid stage design which means even if you’ve never played on a map before, you KNOW you can find a medkit in any darkened sideroom, or at the bottom of any flight of stairs.

Chris or the backers on reddit(or in general) don't know about anything about any game released in the last 15 years. Chris doesn't hesitate to throw (insert popular game title here) under a bus and say Star Citizen will be grander and has better people working on it than those blebs who made (title here). To call Star Marine as deadly as call of duty is laughable on just about any scale, poo poo you could name drop an arena shooter and it would be more deadly than SM, you are more likely to run out of ammo in SM than actually kill someone.

Oh I saw Wing Commander the other day and god drat was that a low quality movie across the board. It’s main high points were the awful 90s hair space navy regulations apparently allow, and the fact that the secondary lead is Live Action Freddie and that one guy from season 3 of twin peaks. The one who has the run-in with the DIRTY BEARDED MEN, IN A ROOM..

Also, of course, the :killdozer:

The stories he tells make it sound like the game is nearly complete but it's all spun up out of whole cloth and I don't know if he's lying or just that out of it. It's like "Yeah my alliance is going to have a mining wing and I'm going to be a part of that, there's going to be a formation of us mining over here and I figure we can move about so many credits a day, so we start upgrading ships and move on to this other place, and then the money is really going to be rolling in." He is, naturally, terrified of goons, so this always involves a meandering side story about how goons are going to try and PvP them but they're ready for goodfites with e-honor because they are the space elite. It's like listening to a 6 year old babble.

Because EVE exists. And a existing game won't be able to fulfill their fantasies.

A non-existing one, on the other hand...

There's a lot of mystery here, but there's only one thing I know for certain: he never actually plays his game.

Oh, this for sure. The people I mentioned before never did, either. That didn't stop them from stalking around the office, watching people work and constantly intruding when something on a monitor somewhere suggested something that wasn't in line with their "vision", even if it was only some piece of temporary junk. It's always so shallow, that's the thing. Chris Roberts has an idea in his head of what it should look like, and if it looks like that it's good, and if it doesn't it's bad. That's the only thing that enters into it for him, I bet. Maybe that works out if you're an art director in the 90s, but it sure as hell doesn't fly as creative director in the 2010s.

And it definitely encourages the people working for him to deliver these visual spectacles sans substance. People pick up pretty quickly on what it is the man holding the purse strings wants to see out of you, and what he doesn't care about, and when said man is also pressuring you to get things done faster, the result is pretty much what we see in SC: a bug-riddled, beautiful husk of a non-game. I can't really lay much blame on the rank and file working at CIG for this reason. I bet a lot of them are early in their careers and can't just quit and work for someone else. It's a noxious way to work and I quit that jazz eventually, but I remember how demoralizing it is to work for that kind of person...

I work in code, so I was spared any direct attention. But I've witnessed the boss calling a thing someone was working on a piece of poo poo right to his face, as he was cruising past in the office. I don't know how Chris Roberts fares on this front, but I think I vaguely remember something about him being pretty aggressive with feedback, too?

Hello fellow fud buddies,

I am a long time lurker in this thread and wanted to let you know my appreciation of all your hard, eh, work. This is actually not my first account - last year I bought an account already, but I never got the login information in my mail and lowtax stopped responding to my messages. But I guess this thread is worth the even double the :10bux:.

I was lurking in this thread since the summer of 2015, when Derek blew his cap and Crobbers published an absolutely unhinged, paranoid response on his web site. I felt pretty alone when I pointed out that the response is kind of weird to people who aren't in the know of the details of the entire affair. After that I was witnessing CIG throwing out all the work on Star Marine, which was at one point super important and central to their work, and then suddenly not anymore at all. Through your thread I witnessed the live stream where the Crobber pretty desperately tried to play his own game, failing horribly. What I found particularly telling is that he was ranting pretty hard and indignant about the chat system, which months before he was praising as an absolute innovation in the context of the social module. The guy had absolutely no idea what his underlings were working on.

I finally pulled the plug and got my 250 bucks back in the winter of 2016/2017. Up until then I kept my pledge because I wanted to have a physical copy of one of the biggest gaming disasters in history. But I thought it'd be at such a price, it'd make a poor conversation piece because you'd have to explain to everyone the long-winded and boring story that is Star Citizen first in order for them to get the joke. The money from the refund went into a bunch of equally frivolous and nerdy hobbies, but at least they exist and are fun.

A long time has passed between 2012 and now and it's absolutely astounding how much has changed in my life while Star Citizen remained sort of a constant, if not one that has been prominent at all times in my life. I finished my Bachelor's Study, found a partner to share my life with, moved town, finished my Master's Degree, moved again, bought a house, got a dog, started and stopped taking flying lessons, got into sim flying instead, became a lovely woodworker, learned how to program microcontrollers to make custom keyboards and game controllers, got fat, got thin, became the uncle of two wonderful girls, and many other things.

Meanwhile, at CIG they're still figuring out how to make people not slip through the floor after 6 years of development. During my PhD I've sometimes doubted myself because my project was super long-winded. And then I look at what CIG did during the same time frame and I think 'Nah, I'll be okay'.

I've procrastinated far too much in this thread as a lurker and I'd like to thank all of you for the entertainment. I would also like to point out that some people have really horrible opinions about food and Fallout 4 and should be shamed for them. Believe it or not, there is something therapeutic in a thread where people do nothing but watch and chronicle a dumpster fire. It puts things in perspective and you can use it to anchor your own point of view.

With that I think I'll close this wall of text. There are too many posters that I'd like for the things they've done and said in this thread. I also feel mighty creepy for pointing out individuals that have never spoken to me. Guy who works at Stellaris, I'm picking up your game as a result of your sane view on game design. Jobbo Fett if for nothing else you'll be remembered as the guy who defeated Derek Smart. BNBL I am glad you stuck to your avatar. Bootcha your series is awesome and I'm glad you fixed your sound. Pgabz once you find it in your heart, get back into the 'verse. Maybe on a Free Fly I'll glitch by your side for moral support. MOMA I don't get what you like about belts so much but that's cool. I like keyboards and planes and weird retro music. Let's rub on our fringe hobbies. Also I believe the blue cheese and yoghurt thing. Beet, give Kayak a big hug from me. I wish I get introduce her to our pupper, they'd be best friends I bet. The Dude with the Darth Vader avatar and the bunny and the others who always photoshop pictures, I love you for what you're doing. GORF I don't know how you find it in yourself to keep writing all those effort posts to the citizens all the time. But I appreciate that you do and I'm sure there are a couple who all your effort posts have brought back into reality. Streetroller hope you're okay and your silence doesn't mean that a citizen has gotten to you. Titanic you're cool. There are many more posters that float through my head but all the avatars and names are just floating in front of my head now.
Also mirificus, you're doing God's work but boy do I fear for your sanity.

Stay frosty and :justpost:.

Always amazes me about how they talk about things planned for SC in the present tense, but when panning ED (or other games) they compare future SC with current (insert other game). Yet if you say something like "Well, ED will probably have space legs in the future" they say "Ah, but it doesn't have it now!".... and i'm like... but... but.... you are bringing up future SC as though its now!

It's basically one of the core tenets of the cult. They are always at war with Goontopia, only SC is allowed to improve - everything else is EXACTLY as it is now (or frankly seems to be at an arbitary point in the past, some of the ED posts are super weird), they are the chosen ones, "Roberts wasn't lying because he didn't know" and "Roberts/CIG have a plan/version of this they haven't shown us yet"

Basically everything else is reality maximum, potential zero. Except SC, and the goons / derek smart are some sort unfinished infinite unstoppable demon horde who are all jealous we can't afford their big guns / cig beat us and/or are trying to tear down everything good.

I can tell you on a i7-8700k, 32 GB RAM, 1080Ti and an SSD game drive, 3.2 has been around 30-40 FPS MOST of the time... Yep, occasionally there is some hits down in the 20's, but its a lot better than 3.1 and 3.0 were.

Sometimes I wonder if you guys even play the new patches anymore before trying to shill them.

The performance increase is due to cig removing a large number of static and per player NPC ships and characters.

Since the age of 2.0 the per player performance for a given server has been largely the same. The only difference has been what cig tried to stuff in the instance regarding ship models and NPC fluff.

Turns out if you’re close to origination of a line of coins, you can generate the first few hashes really easily, leading to a bit of a resource glut. So people are still looking at a spot price that is vaguely static and moving based on the theft of coins and the increasing complexity in generation, but this does mean that some people are seeing gains over the cost of generation electricty.

They’re not only relevant, but they’re accelerating climate change by driving power demands. It’s also a hell of a bubble because there’s no actual trading volume. Think property markets in 2007. Overvalued, and static.

My favorite thing about SC and ED is that for a few years SC was incrementing its "alpha version number" to keep up with Elite. So for example Alpha 2.0 came out right before Elite 2.0, Alpha 2.1 just before Elite 2.1, etc.

It was always extremely obvious also.

Yudkowsky's big contributions to the AI research field are that AIs will keep building themselves to be smarter than us and then if they are not friendly they will become as gods who cannot be stopped, so we must keep them friendly by, uh...doing...a thing. Much like the Crobber has plans to build "fidelity" but no actual idea how game design works or how to make a fun game, Yudkowsky and co have no idea how actual machine learning works but a whole lot of gibberish and dedication to a scenario technology is nowhere ready to put into place (the matrix/general purpose AI).

There's been some interesting studies like that with AI that have to gather resources. They have a weapon that can pause the other AI. When the resources are plentiful they never use the weapon. When the resources start to become scarce it turns into a never ending war where they keep shooting each other.

Chances are pretty low that any good AI will remain friendly if it has priorities that don't include keeping itself nice.
