Yeah I aint gonna defend Puppy Love or Andy Asteroids; they wouldn't have been so bad as one-shots but I guess they felt obligated to have "bonus levels" or something. Most games I appreciate for their creativity also manage to ensure that the variety of challenges is free of stinkers, but EWJ... doesn't.

The problem with Earthworm Jim is everyone played the inferior SNES version instead of the Genesis version. If a game wasn't designed specifically for SNES it was plagued with horrible aspect ratio and bad music made up of generic library samples.

Voice samples were way better on SNES and I actually like the arrangements of the music, but EWJ was clearly a Genesis game first and the punchier sound is used quite well.

I'm glad the intro mission of Shadow Tactics is clear that you really should not feel any issues with killing the enemies instead of trying to go nonlethal.

As much as I like games with a stealth component I really hate situations where the game heavily punishes you for killing dudes while also having a whole bunch of interesting ways to kill dudes that you aren't allowed to ever use if you want to play the game well.

I'm looking at you MGSV

I learnt back in the Sonic Adventure days to not give a poo poo about the letter ranking at the end of a level/mission and just have fun. It's carried me in good stead through MGS Peace Walker and V

Fajita Queen

It wasn't the letter ranking, it was the fact that you had to recruit fucktons of dudes for your base in order to progress a whole bunch of the unlockable stuff and also for some side missions. The nonlethal takedown options were also extremely tedious compared to the lethal ones.

Agree on Metal Gear Solid in general, a series that gives you more guns than most FPS games, but really disagree on MGSV. The initial urge is to fulton everything and everyone but once you hit the cap you realize common soldiers are garbage and the only ones that matter are the mission unique ones and the unique ones with special abilities tied to every mission. MGSV is a game made easier and IMO a lot more fun when you turn the safety off and wreak havoc. And unlike past games the scoring system doesn't really penalize you for kills, it only cares about stealth and time.

It was really liberating to finally S an MGS game while leaving a trail of bodies behind me.

Ah, I got you.

But yeah, in Peace Walker at least you can use the intel team to look at the ranks of soldiers in a mission and if there's no S's or A's you bring the heavy artillery

In MGSV the missions tell you about unique soldiers in their description and they're the only ones worth picking up. Their abilities are required for specialized equipment and their specialty triples their output. By the time the game has enemies with even a B in one area you will be at max capacity from higher ranking soldiers picked up from prisoners, real time missions, and take-out-the-leader missions.

Finished Dead Rising 4 after playing it on and off for over a year since it came out. Solid C+ game overall. Making Overtime mode (which is what Frank Rising basically is) paid DLC is some incredible Capcom bullshit.

Some of the issues it had are things that have been an annoyance since the first game in the franchise, ie prioritising animations over input like in GTA4-5 and the AssCreed games. Making Frank go through a doorway is insufferable and at times if you jump against a wall he'll randomly stop responding for a couple of seconds until the game catches up on what you're trying to do. Other issues are introduced by 4 - they've removed NPC escort missions and the timer and really haven't added anything; It's Dead Rising lite. Racking up combos and mashing the attack button to kill groups of zombies is still fun, but it's pretty shallow and there isn't much to do unless you like going collectible hunting, which was ok since the game's sense of humour was one of its highlights for me (Frank's VA is pretty good even if it isn't the same person) and the readables are full of that. The game world was generally well made though, even if the mall isn't used much and you spend most of your time outdoors. Getting rid of boss battles was stupid and no matter how many excuses they threw (people getting offended at the stereotypes in 3) I'm 99% sure it was a budget issue since the game felt like it had lower production values than the ones before it, and Capcom coming close to cancelling DR3 back in the day doesn't inspire much confidence, neither does the budget for DR5 getting reportedly cut in half if it hasn't been straight up cancelled by now.

good morning fak

I bought Celeste during the steam sale after seeing it at SGDQ and played through it this weekend.
I was kind of sick of the "jump around through spike-filled rooms and die a lot" platformers of the early 2010s but this one managed to be really enjoyable.
I just wish 50% of my deaths weren't from dashing in a corner when I was trying to dash straight and vice-versa. Was that an issue for anyone else or is it just my terminally fat fingers?
