Anyone check out Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter? It doesn't quite go to the same places as Jody Hill's other stuff but I still liked it. Brolin is really good in it and so is the kid they cast.

Finished Sinner. It's eh, decent. Very much felt like a basic cable True detective/Night of mix, but sort of missed the mark for me. I guess all the pieces fit together in the end but the whole thing felt sort of cheesy and there was so much extraneous bullshit in there. Either way it hooked me, so there is that.

I'm mostly with you on this, however I recently saw American Made on HBOGO and he was unable to elevate that one into watchability. Just a nothing movie. The Jack Reacher sequel was also majorly disappointing(great ending though) and The Mummy was horrendous. So he's had three pretty major missteps in the past several years, which is unlike him because he's been so amazingly consistent.

i think a big the reason the recent tom cruise stuff owns is because he's teamed with mcquarrie as director - note mummy and the reacher sequel had nothing to do with the latter & it's why all of the good mission impossibles were directed by the same dude instead of a different person each movie

Live Die Repeat was pretty solid, but aside from that Liman hasn't made a good film for 16 years. It was one of the most awkwardly boring movie-watching experiences I've had. I was amazed how stale it was for a De Palma film.

Ethan's team is tasked with recovering a secret spy list, but then they're ambushed when they show up for the mission and he's framed for it. The rest of the movie is Ethan following leads to figure out who set him up. I suppose the convoluted part would be Ethan's interactions with the presumed buyer of the list, but I dunno, it all seemed fairly straightforward to me.

For almost the entirety of the movie, we're seeing it from Ethan Hunt's perspective, as opposed to an objective narrator ... which is kind of DePalma's thing. The Claire / Ethan editing is pretty messy, but it all comes out in the wash.

Mission Impossible 2 has a sword fight with motorcycles instead of swords, and I still find it tedious as gently caress to watch. The first flick is Good Fun De Palma, but MI:3 owns bones exclusively through PSH’s performance.

i watched the very end and then the very beginning of 4 a couple weeks back on cable and i totally forgot that after the initial pre-title opener they show you most of the movie in the background including the villain's death scene as the cast names roll

I loved the Facemaker double-cross by Ethan at the end of 2, and the motorcycle chase was basically a 5 minute advertisement for Triumph. I think 3 was where I first noticed PSH shredding scenery in movies he knows are trash, and should be what he's best remembered for. He elevates Along Came Polly to a loving master class in not giving a gently caress and out-acting everyone.

It’s the only time that Abrams’ “mystery box” structure ever worked for me, and I think it’s partially because it’s set in the spy genre, where it natually fits. Plus, like we’ve been mentioning, a compelling villain helps keep momentum moving.

And just his romantic life in general. Having his people do auditions for potential girlfriends. How he alienated his children against Nicole Kidman when she refused to convert and they divorced. How Katie Holmes had to get a whole team of lawyers to concoct an escape plan to get her and her daughter away from him. He's a good actor, and obviously charismatic, and also a completely disturbing and scary individual.
