it’s very possible (and good) to talk poo poo about the bad parts US military/diplomacy policy without just straight making GBS threads on European nations who’ve decided to work together on collective defense agreements and accusing them of being rubes/puppets of the US.

When talking with members from the Baltic states’ militaries they frequently expressed frustration at being asked by Americans whether they agreed with the most hawkish US hawks or preferred or feared the dovish US stance of not getting into a war over the Baltic’s, as if US political infighting/debate was their primary concern.

Russia is punching massively above its weight class in that list and would get eaten alive if it actually did anything to genuinely piss off the core EU beyond realpolitiks. France still largely runs its own imperial interests in Africa on the side on top of having gone back into the fold of immediate US imperialism that the UK never left.

Russia isn't just going to roll their tanks into anywhere in NATO, even if the US left, that's not how wars work anymore. they'd just do the same poo poo they're currently doing in Ukraine which we are completely impotent against aside from literally arming every nazi we can find. it’s worth wondering what NATO would do in such a situation, but Article 5 certainly includes refusing to tolerate Russian artillery and regular units attacking positions inside NATO.

Whoever east European states volunteer to be imperialist subjects of isn't a concern of the United States. You've basically just been making a paternalistic argument for several pages, that the richest people in the world which benefited the most from centuries of global colonialism, and who dominate the European Union, are too impotent to defend their own interests.

Since the new millenium, all of NATO's military interventions have been committed in the interests of American or French imperialism - and NATO affiliations have been a cover for Turkish expansionism into Syria. It's not a real defensive alliance, it's the imperialistic arm of the Global North.

ok but what does "refusing to tolerate" entail in the context of some subterfuge action that doesn't entirely qualify as an act of war? would russia arming and encouraging some local seperatists require an escalation to continental war or just more pointless sanctions? what if you couldn't prove they had anything to do with it?

Germany had solid economic superiority over most of its land neighbors (the Soviet Union was just a hair less of the world economy than Germany) and was a close third worldwide behind the UK; by comparison modern Russia is an economic middle weight that's fallen massively behind Germany and isn't even anywhere near #2 in continental mainland Europe at this point without the rest of the ex USSR behind it. The franco-german alliance doesn't care about Riga and the russian leadership knows they can't push that much without getting hosed up.

Either Eastern Europe gets exploited by Western Europe, or they get exploited by Russia. In any case, they're not developed enough to stand on their own as fully independent countries, and only have utility because of their educated populations that can be underpaid by European capital.
