That's by design. Map instance population limits are kept low. More of the "single-player game that was mistakenly made as a MMO" thing.

I just got to Egypt and geez, was it a last-minute addition to the game or something? It feels like I spent the last two hours doing the same cut+pasted defend the base mission over and over.

Egypt has the Last Train to Cairo content which was originally post-game content added into the main story. Unfortunately everyone who made the good fun missions had been cut by then and there are a lot of wave defense missions.

Just finished Egypt part 2 and I enjoyed it way more than part 1. Hell, it took me so long to get to part 2 because I went back to Innsmouth to level since I couldn't stand E part 1.

Seconding this. First part of egypt actually made me stop playing for a while. But the 2nd part is pretty cool and you actually do stuff that matters. so i guess power through it.

Is the second part the underground city that's been mentioned a few times? The cult story line so far has been lame and not nearly as charming as Not Maine.

Nope, that's part of Last Train to Cairo. You'll resolve that before you go to the second Egypt map.

Huh. I thought the Last Train to Cairo was pretty alright. I actually can't think of any defend the base type missions in that chain but admittedly I haven't replayed it recently. The Unbound chain though, that I think I disliked.

My main problem with the last train is how the blue (I think) card reader is not made easy to spot and I had to do a bunch of back tracking :V I might just need to do some investigation quests to avoid missing such obvious details though.

The shittiest part was the broken ladders with the hook-in that needed you to enter at a specific angle else you'd fall off the train.

3rd area Transylvania isn't bad at all so far. Starts off way better than Egypt did anyway.

Trying to get the "don't get hit by beams" cheevo on the top of the train is frustrating as hell.

Transylvania is heaps of fun and I'm sad I raced through it the first time to get to 50. Went back recently and although I'm well over-levelled it's a really interesting setting.

Is the last 25% of the game worth pushing through egypt? I've forced myself through what I think is most of the third act, then hit a weird bit where it takes a break from the plot to funnel you through an endless series of extremely frustrating sabotage missions. The latest one was the thing where you go back in time to rome, and since I"m terrible at stealth I probably poured 45+ minutes into figuring out what the heck it wanted me to do, only for the crafting thing to break. Forums all said to try relogging, which reset the entire mission and lost all of my progress. I haven't been having any fun whatsoever since about 2 hours into egypt, and if transylvania is more of the same I figure I should cut my losses and just call it quits.

Transylvania is definitely better than Egypt IMO. It's overarching plot is about vampires going on a cruise to take over the county using old Soviet leftovers. It also has probably the best DLC content with the Sleepless Lullaby missions.

And that mission you were stuck on was part of Issue 6 which was just a poo poo show. When it came out in the original game it just flat out broke the game for a set of people using AMD+Nvidia. It was broken for a couple months with absolutely no communication about why it happened or when it would be fixed. Hell the original head dev actually mocked players for bringing it up.

Yeah oh man, I assume Last Train to Cairo is the climax/final mission of that issue? Because it wasn't the buggy horror show that the rome level was, but holy crap what a giant bundle of bad design decisions wrapped into one mission.

It was indeed the grand finale of the issue.

My favorite bad design decision was how during the time frame the game literally wasn't working some pubbie streamed riding the train for 18 hours (apparently the IRL time for it to get to Cairo from where SD takes place because the head dev jokingly said something might happen. In the end he popped into the stream and teleported her to a very unfinished and Tokyo as a tease.

I think Tokyo came out like two years later? And the bug didn't get fixed until a couple months later

I thought Transylvania and Kaiden were really good story wise. Transylvania less so the main plot and more so the part that leads into Kaiden, though the finale of Transylvania was fantastic.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

the way to fix this (i had the exact same problem, even opened a ticket for it) was to exit the game, then restart it.

You do lose a little progress, but by now you should know the pattern. You should have the 1 part already crafted in your pack, you just need some bits from deconstruction one of those things and its done.

And yeah, the 2nd part of egypt is good.

Here's another interview with the new lead designer.

If you don't feel like reading, the only really interesting points are that the next content update will be a mission pack some time after the anniversary. Also, he likes the idea of scaling zones so earlier zones may not be a complete waste to do.

I loved how "Tokyo soon, promise" turned into "hey I guess you guys like golem events" for over a year. That said, the early golem events (anniversary golems, then the halloween event with Super Jack) started out fun, but got overly grindy. And even though the game clearly couldn't handle having more than a few people in an area fighting big bosses, they kept having them because they had nothing else at all. And then they dropped the godawful wave defense scenarios and those together with Joel being a smug rear end in a top hat about everything (and prioritizing taking ill-gotten achievement reward gear away from people over fixing any of the poo poo that was wrong with the game), I think that's what broke the game for me.

Hell yeah. First island still the best zone.

I don't want to diminish the other ones but I find Lovecraftian coastal town with dark secrets simply more compelling.

Escorted NPCs (including these) speed up quite a bit if you get a ways ahead of them. Just have to be quick on running back to save them if something spawns behind you.

Ooh that's handy to know, thanks! I kept close because I was worried that getting too far away would result in the mission failing or them resetting to their starting point.
