I vaguely remember the guy you rescue from the trap in Kingsmouth and have to escort to the police station never seemed to haul rear end and would stop when you got far ahead enough.

He stops when zombies spawn to attack him. It may be possible to get too far ahead? I know that guy has two speeds: a walk which barely finishes the mission in time (if you kill the spawns and adds fast enough) and a jog he'll go into if you get a ways ahead of him.

This may be a bug or weird netcode, but at least when I did that mission he didn't break into a run purely based on distance- he very specifically only ran after a mob had aggroed me or him, but before they hit us. Once one of them got a lick in, he'd go back to cowering/crawling. So I actually sped through that mission by constantly getting aggroed, then trying to keep juuust out of range while running towards town.

Holy crap, so I'm a moron: I read somewhere that you can't upgrade from blue-purple until level 50, and somehow I assumed that level 1 blues fused to become purples, I had no idea that you had to upgrade them again... so I did the entire back half of the game on level 1 blue gear, and figured the difficulty spike was because I started Egypt overlevelled and Transylvania was just me hitting content actually balanced for level 50.

Every hour a portal opens in Agartha which lets you fight a Talos hole. Beating that gives you a buff that lets you open one hive.

What's the deal with the Red Hand Research Matterials side missions in Transylvania? All three want me to do pretty mundane kill/gather/explore stuff, but all of the enemies in the search radius one-shot me, even though we're both level 50. Is the post-50 meta all about guessing which enemies I can and cannot fight based on trial and error?

It's the zone's lair. It's not meant to be done solo.

e: When you enter a lair's boundary, you should hear a scream-roar, see the screen shake, and see black veins of the filth start to cloud the edges of the screen. The lair mission icons are also filth-edged. Lair mission text has "Nightmare" in red letters right at the top. How many warning signs do you need?

There's actually a few non-lair missions that run you through the area IIRC. It's fun. :downs:

Oh that makes sense, thanks for the clarification!

To be fair, I hate SWL's combat system and have steadfastly refused to learn anything about it all game; I genuinely assumed that was a buff/debuff/effect from one of the many enemies chasing me across the whole zone, it never occurred to me that it was specifically there to say "Hey, go somewhere else until you have a group of a certain size".

Blue Mountain has a mission to collect things from inside the lair but you can also find them outside the lair, along the edge of the construction site where the mobs are normal. Carpathian Fangs has a sabotage mission that expects you to sneak through the lair and kill a few of the mobs by luring them into traps, though when I did it (which was a while ago, admittedly) it was bugged and the last guard couldn't be killed by traps and wouldn't de-aggro:

So I Walk Into Empty was rad as gently caress- I wish every main quest was that neat.

Edit: How much of the game is left after Kaidan? Every single mission I've done since the venice stuff has been a tedious, frustrating waste of time, and I genuinely don't want to play anymore if there are more than a few hours of this BS left before the end.

After Kaidan there's just South Africa and it's not very long at all. I'd recommend sticking with it because some of the story stuff in Kaidan is really good but if you're finding things frustrating, watch the gently caress out for Nightmares in the Dream Palace because that mission takes loving ages to complete and it's all in an instance so you can't logout halfway through without losing progress.

Hmmkay, thanks for the heads-up... I assume there's nothing I can do to make the combat less annoying unless I want to go back and grind missions for gear so I can upgrade all of my stuff to purple? Because everything is technically doable, but I'm finding that most of the oni and filth zombies take freaking forever to whittle down.

Yeah, gear upgrades are mainly how you advance your character post-50; the cumulative stat bonuses from the passive skill trees and capstones are smaller than what you'll get from gear (though not insignificant). Don't do South Africa without at least purple gear, because every loving boss is a giant sack of hp.

Hmkay, thanks! :)

Out of curiosity, what's the target gear level in Kaidan, low purple? I started it with my stuff blue at around level 10-15, and it's probably the first real difficulty spike I've felt for ages.

Low purple will make life a lot easier, as will a good build. I did aoe chaos/hammer dps in Kaidan with self healing passives and never died in low purple.

Are you in a cabal? There's only a few really large, super active ones but that can make a world of difference. Mine runs the raid and regionals several times a week and specifically has signups for undergeared players to come leech. You can go from all blues to all purples pretty quick that way.

If you're felling a little burnt out maybe take a breather and just log once a week for cabal runs until you're geared/recharged? The story tends to be more enjoyable when it doesn't feel like a slog.

That makes sense... thanks for the advice! Looking at the story quests I only seem to have 10-15 missions left, so I'll probably just power through them; with mid blues I'm only dying when I pull too many mobs, so I'm guessing that it'll take longer to do even one loot grinding session than to finish the main content. :)

As a heads up, the Orochi tower missions take quite a bit of time to grind through and you probably won't have much fun if you're heaps under-levelled.

I'd suggest that you keep plugging away, but also queue for dungeons. Someone else needs to confirm but I think even the story mode dungeons drop distillates which is a far better way to level gear than running missions and combining gear.

How much does my talisman prefix matter for endgame gear? Can I just grab some random 3-dot greens from the auction house to serve as the basis for all my infusions, or are there really specific ones I need to be getting?

Hello Sailor
May 3, 2006

Very little, unless you're planning to do higher-difficulty dungeons. Don't do that. Also, the only talismans that need to be 3-dot are the ones you're actually going to equip. You can sacrifice gear with any number of dots as fodder for empowerment and infusion.

Dots don't even matter all that much for weapons, the only thing it does is determine the magnitude of the suffix. However, some of the rare weapons can change the mechanics of how the weapon works, so some builds are based around a particular rare weapon.

Hmmkay... so I won't be kneecapping myself if I just grab a bunch of low-cost, generic 3-pip greens and use them as the base everything else gets shoveled into? Because I'm browsing the auction house for head talismans, and the sheer variety seems somewhat overwhelming.

Definitely not. You'll be fine.

If you care a great deal about a "perfect build" then stop at purple 30 for item advancement, do your research on what you want (odds are good someone has already nutted out BiS for everything somewhere), then either upgrade what you have to legendary (if you care to) or use what you've already upgraded as merge fodder on your preferred item once you get that to purple 30.

Sounds reasonable, thanks! I probably won't stick around long enough to do anything above purple, I'm just trying to get a semi-optional set of low purples to make the last few missions less brutal. ^^
