the washing machine and steel tariffs aren’t really related at all. the tariffs on inputs were going to happen anyway, because of the lobbying from other industries.

the bourgeois don’t really have class consciousness, because they constantly gently caress each other over pursuing their own narrow self-interest.

As with almost everything hosed up about America, there a really good Dollop podcast about what a piece of poo poo Huey Long was here http://thedollop.libsyn.com/215-huey-long. I'm sure a good bit of the racist was just being from Louisiana in the early 20th century. However that doesn't excuse the fact that he was a corrupt violent ignoramus much like our current president. He just leaned socialist/commie instead of fascist/Nazi.

Trump can do whatever he wants to these people. they will never vote for anyone but a Republican. they've been fed the ideas their entire lives that being a democrat is anti-American, weak, and smarmy elite. these people are so obsessed with portraying the opposite of those things that they will let Trump completely destroy their lives before they vote for a democrat

The way all these smart, savvy, sensible businessmen convinced themselves that Trump's tradewar campaign talk was just a smokescreen to gull the rubes, that he didn't really mean it, that he'd drop it once he got into office, only to discover that no, he actually meant all of that tariff war stuff, he really meant what he said about tearing up all our trade deals and negotiating newer, better ones in their place - that will always be funny.

wasn't Huey Newton named after Huey Long because his dad respected Long's use of southern racist sentiments to create jobs and improve the living conditions for blacks by things like "we can't have blacks in this hospital, we need another hospital staffed only by blacks and for blacks" and such things, or am I drunkenly remembering this very wrong?

Huey Long had an ego bigger than the world and everything he did was to feed it. He built a governor's mansion based off the White House, he made the state capital building 34 stories tall so it would be the biggest, pumped gently caress loads of money into LSU. His leftist stuff was done so he'd be remembered as the greatest politician ever and ran Louisiana as a dictatorship to do it. He held the governor seat and his senate seat for a year just so a political rival wouldn't become governor. Dude owned, but also wasn't good if you cared about democracy or something.

Huey Long is one of my favorite people ever. Here are some quotes from an article about the construction of the governor's mansion:

quote:

The Times-Picayune and other outlets called it the “Louisiana White House” and his contemporary biographer Forrest Davis quotes Long as saying about the building’s look, “I want to be used to the White House when I get there.” (New Yorker writer A.J. Liebling tells a different version, wherein Huey “wanted a replica of the White House so he would know where the light switches were in the bathrooms when he got to be president.”)

quote:

One night in March 1929, Long called up the warden of the “Alcatraz of the South,” Angola State Prison, and ordered him to send a number of convicts (reports range from 30 to 100) to Baton Rouge. Huey personally led the chain gang down from the Capitol to the mansion and watched them tear it down. “

quote:

In all fairness to the mansion, the real culprit for Rose’s distance was likely Huey Long’s secretary, who was rumored to be his mistress. The giveaway might have been when he named her secretary of state for Louisiana and possibly had her ex-husband kidnapped and stashed on a remote island.

But yeah he was distinctly undemocratic, however his road to power was by enfranchising the disenfranchised. That having been said, politics in general was super corrupt back then. It's honestly astounding in comparison.

Long is what Trump would be if Trump knew what he was doing, helped his electorate instead of loving them over, and fought against corporations instead of politicians and celebrities. Long just wanted power and was riding a wave of dissent much like Trump. He was mainly interested in glorifying himself and he knew what strings to pull to make that happen, not saying he didn't accomplish good things but in the end people who only want to get power for themselves end up being destructive. On the other hand it's interesting how Long was hated by many in his day for things that seem mild compared to what Trump is doing today.
