Yeah defending yourself from a primary should be just the accepted thing since worst case it keeps them on their toes and sharp. No politician is so important they can't be replaced if they get too lazy in their duties. The fundamental flaw in your perspective is that you seem to view the Democrats becoming not-bad as being counter to the goal of defeating the Republicans. Don't you realize how absurd this is? There is no rational reason to think that the radical left is a threat to Democrats defeating Republicans. The Democrats have done a fine job of losing to Republicans long before the radical left gained any non-negligible amount of influence in American politics. At best, outrage at Trump might allow the Democrats to win once, before prompting losing power in the same vein as 2010. If you want them to hold power long enough to actually accomplish anything, you need to focus on the Democrats. Otherwise the absolute best outcome you can hope for is a repeat of Obama, and that's an extremely depressing outcome for those of us who aren't privileged enough to enjoy the status quo.
