Korean and Japanese TV is particularly bad about this. For some reason they believe viewers need to have the focus point bashed over their heads or something. I remember there being some zero-budget "let's just show YouTube videos and call it a TV show" programs and they would show the actual progress bar on the bottom of the screen, with a marker when the funny / crazy thing would happen ON TOP OF an actual countdown timer somewhere else on the screen. For a 30-second video.
