I used to work at a wildlife research center with a population of whitetail and fallow deer and every fall they'd lose their velvet. Always scared the hell out of the new students since it's vascular and looks gory as hell when it comes off. Content: this was one of the deer. He was eleven years old when I took this picture, lived in a pen with two of his sons and occasionally some emu, and was the sweetest guy in the world. He ran into the fence every time he heard loud noises, which is why he looks like that.

Velvet is kind of horrifying. Antlers are kind of horrifying. Big pieces of bone grow out of your skull! Then the skin covering the bone starts dying and falling off in big bloody chunks! Then the naked bone falls off! Repeat every year! Horns are much more reasonable.
