I agree teens wanting fictional boys to kiss is truly one of the most terrible and disgusting crime there is.

Not what I was getting at. Tumblr is the place making a big outcry. They're not ALSO making a big outcry about anything related to Ruroni Kenshin because it isn't as shippable.

The amount of outrage Tumblr is going to have about how horrible and author is, is directly related to how shippable the series is.

Like seriously, I'm a dude that likes to kiss dudes, don't even try to turn my words to that angle.

SyntheticPolygon

Like Ruroni Kenshin is a manga from the 90s when anime and manga weren't as easily accessible to a lot of people getting a sequel sorta thing 20 years after its completion. Compared to MHA being a manga released at a time when Shonen Jump is pretty easy to get access to for a lot of Western fans and it has a currently ongoing anime that is rather well-regarded and has brought in a lots of fans who would rather watch shows than read comics.

Also MHA has had really good buzz surrounding it for years now as a really well done manga that has kinda replaced Naruto (another manga that got pretty popular worldwide) as one of Jump's top battle Shonen series. While Ruroni Kenshin has had recent talk about "Holy poo poo the author of this comic got busted for having Child Porn" which doesn't really inspire people to check out the manga. And means that there is not as many people really engaged with it to get mad that it's back.

There's a bunch of reasons why there are not as many like loud or vocal fans of Ruroni Kenshin among Western audiences compared to MHA. And I think kissable boys isn't really a huge part of that.

Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
How is Rurouni Kenshin not shippable? You've got the big guy with the big sword who has a way with his hands, and the delicate, effeminate guy who likes his swords sheathed.

I'm guessing there's not as many people talking about kenshin because a) it's old and they don't care, and b) the news about the author is old and they don't care

I'm definitely old because all I can think of is "Rurouni Kenshin had a huge shipping scene back in the day". It was the one WSJ series that was super-popular with women.

If someone says it one more time I'm having Florina show up as a corpse. I'm not even kidding, I was pissed off with people doing that shit back in 2010, and I'm not dealing with it now in 2016.
The outrage is closer to the fact that a lot of readers project their personal emotions onto characters. and have built up rich, detailed ideas and theories and characterization all in their head. I know people declared this arc "The worst" because it didn't confirm that Dabi was Endeavors secret child, "Worse than the Yakuza arc" I saw.

It's not that Endeavor isn't a dick, they just hyped up how much of a dick he was in their head. And then when that super evil dickhead in their head who beats his son and wife and terrorizes his family and is probably an alcoholic too isn't treated with utter revulsion by Todoroki and a wish for his death, clearly that means Horikoshi is awful and deserves to die.

The kind of people who send death threats is typically the kind of people who have things black and white in their head. That there is an overlap of these people and people who look at Endeavor and Hawks and go "THEY FUCKIN!" Is not related. You can be interested in wing boy on burning bara and not send death threats or be a weirdo.

That makes a lot of sense. People get really invested into shows these days, they put more of themselves than ever into the worlds and characters, and they get really betrayed when the story zigs when they think it should zag.

I am down with Horikoshi wearing a different superhero mask every event he shows up at. Adam Savage does this every Comicon, Yoko Taro does this (with the same mask, obviously), Bryan Cranston did it that one year with the Walter White mask, uhhh... somebody help me out here with other cases.

re all the tumblr stuff: i have noticed that most of the set of people that get into tumblr-style fandoms (and also the gunnerkrigg court comments section) seem prone to hyperaggression toward lovely fathers to a degree that would be comical if not for the extent of the venom

and tumblr-style fandom has such deep emotional investment and sense of ownership of a series that when a series handles such themes poorly (read: not entirely to the fandoms liking) they can feel deeply betrayed by the author.

Also, why are you reading comment sections? Don't do that. It's bad for you

It has nothing to do with being overly attached to characters. It's because abuse is a very real and very damaging thing, and Horikoshi is making light of the issue by portraying an abuser sympathetically.

I don't think Horikoshi is, but I can definitely see why people are angry.

I feel like an ideal way to "sympathetically" deal with an abuser is the way (very mild Umineko context that isn't really a spoiler) Rosa is dealt with in Umineko. The writing is very clear about not excusing or "redeeming" her, while still shedding light on the circumstances that lead to the abuse and portraying her as a human being.

We must be seeing different things because part of what makes me so anxious and frustrated about this arc is the amount of people wholeheartedly buying into Endeavor's 'redemption arc', defending him and saying stuff like "Endeavor's legit one of my favs now!' while drawing cute fanart of him.

I'm still on the fence about whether or not Horikoshi is purposefully trying to make him sympathetic, but I'm definitely judging the series harsher because it seems to be doing that anyway.

There are parts of Endeavor you can enjoy. There are parts of Endeavor you can absolutely loathe. Doing both is the secret to enjoying the character and the story it's telling.

I don't think Endeavor gets redeemed in this arc. I don't think he ever can be, nor does he think he should be. All Might's retirement put a lot into perspective for him, I think, and the best he's hoping for at the moment is for his son to learn what he can from him professionally.

tbh i find this treatment of endeavor far more interesting story-wise than if he just existed for todoroki to poo poo on about being a bad dad or whatever it is people mad enough to send death threats want; it's absolutely not a 'redemption' but it's a good look into his own point of view as the new number 1 in a post-all might world
