Finished two quick(ish) Jojo cosplays for Anime Next!

I don't know why I thought being covered from head to toe to fingertip was a good idea for June, but I did Diego Brando from Steel Ball Run and I can't wait to take stupid photos at the Wild Wild West casino.

I also did a weird cover variation of Josuke/Gappy Higashikata from Jojolion, and went all out with the glitter and metallic. I usually make my costumes pretty 'realistic' looking in fabric choice so it was a fun change to just really lean into the ridiculous design and make it even more over the top. And bless having a costume I don't need to wear a wig with...

Next up on the docket is Zidane from FFIX and possibly Yoshiko from Love Live. I've also been roped into a "Golden Kamuy Resort" group so I think I'm going to make Edogai some horrible skin patchwork swim trunks, I'm pretty excited for that mess.

How are everyone's costumes going? I did some makeup tests for my Demifiend, and I love the way the teal/black work together, but I'm still going to try and make a stencil of some kind so I can have crisp lines. Time for some photos of my awkwardly cropped face!

Some friends and I are also planning costumes from Revolutionary Girl Utena for San Japan this year, so I'll be the group Anthy. My friend is an excellent seamstress and is making the dress and uniforms by hand, and I'm working on props:

I want to ask the thread for some advice: I'm a bit worried doing a cosplay as a character of color. Anthy is Indian/Asian, or at least appears to be, and I don't want to come off as being insensitive. Yeah the anime is super old and plenty of white kids have done the costume, but I want to do it right, so if anyone has advice - even if its "shut up you'll be fine" - please let me know!

Hopefully I'll have that
problem someday.
Please don't get self-tanner or dark makeup and do black-face. Colored contacts and personality will make up for not matching the skin color.

Shut up you'll be fine.

My 6 year old daughter wants to be Violet from Willy Wonka for Halloween this year, how the hell do I fabricate a big circle that is comfortable for Trick or Treating?

I was thinking paper mache but it would have to survive accidental rain and not be to hot.

Also shot the idea of using rattan wood strips to make a bunch of horizontal circles and figure out how to rig it so it sits on her shoulders with arm slots.

Also using less horizontal rattan strips paired with vertical strips to get the shape and allow her more comfort.

I am very handy with a sewing machine and was even thinking about sewing a big circle together and support it with upper and lower wiring (stronger armature wire?) and with vertical supports. Rigging it so it doesn't move a lot shouldn't be too hard.

So any ideas?

If it were me, I’d probably try thinner cushion/textile foam. Reasonably lightweight and you can cut and glue into a wearable sphere.

I like that idea, I had not thought of that one yet. That would be cheap, light, easy to work with and probably comfortable for her.

I thought of the sumo costume or some version of a blow up costume but I want her to be able to get in and out of it at school and I always liked the crafting aspect of the costume making.

Thanks for the good ideas.

Gamera009 and I made a Totoro out of 2" foam and it has held up great. Here is what he looks like without his cover. I wouldn't use this thick of foam for what you have in mind though.

My Squirrel Girl tail uses 1/2 inch foam.

Here is my Favorite shot from this year's Denver Comic Con. This guy's Dr Doom is made out of metal.

Unfortunately we didn't get a super great full length shot of all the The Adventure Zone costumes I made but this one is pretty good. Did all but the Barry bluejeans.

My costume was recognized without the group one time so that was cool. Like most of my costumes it was put together hastily. Everyone else had theirs done in a better manner. I like the direction I was going though so I think I'm going to just make a better outfit for underneath the cloak.

Also I did a quick and easy Sailor V costume- even left my accessories at home and ended up finding a heart necklace and red earrings at H&M. There are better pictures somewhere but here I am with my best friend who is dressed as Delirium from The Sandman

The Adam Savage build was where I originally got the ratan wood idea from, very neat idea and build, I loved it.

That 2 inch foam is pretty cool. How comfortable was that temperature wise? Did you use hot glue to attach the pieces?

That would probably be easy to make a globe shape that holds its shape easily. Could probably use some 3M spray adhesive to attach the purple cloth to it too I'm thinking?

Also your costumes came out more than fantastic, the quality is very impressive.

I think you could get away with using a less wide foam. It can be very hot inside. You need to use Contact cement to attach the foam. It's a bit time consuming but it really bonds well.

Looks like many people do paper mache over exercise balls too- it wouldn't be as comfortable as foam though.

Working on a Weiss Schnee commission and did the snowflake detail with a paint and stencil. Problem is now I can't get all the temp glue from the stencil off of the fabric. Working on a Ghostbusters costume for the upcoming Raleigh Supercon and I started working on a Ghost Trap. I'm pretty happy with it so far, I learned I need to take into account measurements so the foam board over laps so I don't have big gaps. Need to do some stickers and paint detail work to finish it.

First time trying this and I happy with the over all outcome.

Nice, looks really good. I've been slowly assembling a Ghostbusters costume over the past few years. Since I missed out on Mattel's trap a few years ago and the ebay prices are kinda nuts I've been thinking about building one of my own. I went to https://gbfans.com to look at other gear after seeing your pics and it looks like Spirit Halloween Store is making some more stuff that'll be out in a couple of months. I just saw this video of two guys who got their hands on some and they look pretty good. I pre-ordered the trap and PKE meter. I also placed an order for a 1:1 proton pack kit from Anovos a year and a half ago that still hasn't come. I'm bummed about the wait, but they say it'll finally be shipping soon and I paid $350 less than the price they are listing it at now.

I'm already thing of ways to mod the trap to have a pumping vape kit in it to make it smoke. I'd also like to figure out a way to make my jump suit slime covered. I was thinking mixing a silicon glue with green and glow-in-the-dark pigments and globbing it on, that way I wouldn't make a huge mess whenever I wanted to use it. If anybody has suggestions on those I'd love to hear it.

I like the vape kit idea for the trap, that would be neat. I was also trying to think of a way I could slime coat or make my jumper for dirty and battle worn.

This is the rest of my costume for now as I was trying for a best of both worlds. Screen accurate meets cartoon fun.

The packs electronics stilll works I'm just missing some accessories and I'm thinking I need to fabricate a holster for the gun since it doesn't mount anywhere. Not sure I'll bring the Ghost Zapper but if I do I'll have to reproduce some stickers and the goggles did not survive time well but I can work with those.

Man Spirit is making some nice props, that trap is very nice. I still need to figure out how to mount mine so its comfortable. I'm thinking velcro command strips.

This guy has a series of videos about turning a vape mechanism into a mini smoke machine for cosplay purposes...haven't tried it myself, but his techniques seem relatively straightforward?

Also, I bet you could mix up some clear/tinted silicone--maybe diluted with some paint thinner--that would cure to look a lot like wet slime if you dumped it onto an outfit.

That took a lot more effort than you'd expect. Managing the voltage for the fans and the vape rig with remote switching was . . . complicated.

PM me with the basics of what you want to do (control locations, other related effects like lighting) and the space you have for installation, and I'll see what I can do.

Cool, thanks. Any help would be rad.

I won't have my hands on the trap for a few more weeks, but I'll bet the space inside will be pretty limited, but lighting and sound are already integrated. I'm not super interested in those effects anyway, so I could gut them if I needed more room. I don't really need an external switch either, I could just turn on the smoke-maker-thingy and pop it in. I'd be worried about the vape pens burning out their heating coils if they are constantly running though, maybe something that makes them run for 5 seconds, then off for 10 would be necessary. I don't know poo poo about vaping.

I'm thinking about taking a dive into armor crafting, I'm all around handy, have access to nice tools and paints. I'm think of working on a Shredder costume as the small armor pieces look easy to fabricate as well as the chest armor from pictures, I'm proficient with my Serger and sewing machine so the cloth should be easy but the helm looks like that will be the challenge.

Anybody have a resource they like for helm/armor crafting 101?
