Funny. I replayed Half-Life after replaying Half-Life 2 and found it to age poorly.

Anyway, looking back on that list is interesting. I don't think I could do a list like that again.

The closest I could do is a "200 Videogames You Have to Play" list that would be unranked.

Civilization VI is without doubt the worst Civ game ever released. The game's mechanics actively punish you for trying to specialise your civ towards any particular direction and it pretty much forces you to play it the way it wants, which is the opposite of the point of a Civ game. It has completely given up any pretence of simulating history and instead it feels like playing a really boring board game. The cartoony graphics don't help either. It's just a bunch of game mechanics thrown together for you to interact with and has no immersive qualities at all.

Example: Archery costs 40% more to research unless you kill a unit with a slinger. Don't need a slinger? Have one that didn't get the last hit in on a barbarian? gently caress you, arbitrarily pay 40% more research for archery. So you end up building a slinger out of obligation and managing some random battle with barbarians so that it gets last kill, to avoid being penalised. There is one of these arbitrary requirements for every single technology in the game, making you go out of your way to do something you might not otherwise do just to avoid having your research punished. You know, like real leaders didn't.

Example: You can't even build your own roads until like 1600. Instead, trade units build their own roads as they go. This is to force you to use the trade units - like every other mechanic in the game, it makes you do one of everything or get punished. And you end up not making trade routes with any other civilisations simply so you can build a road network between your cities. You know, like ancient empires didn't.

Also they took out 2/3 of the Civs and added them as paid DLC, so gently caress that.

I thought this was the civ thread when I saw this. I'm not going to defend civ6, since it held no magic for me (while 5 still does, worryingly). But... did you honestly just forget that Civ:BE is right there? There is some mighty fierce competition out there for "Wost Civ game ever", without even getting into any of the spinoffs.

I think most people have forgotten about Civ:BE and to be honest I think you could make the argument that it is a spinoff.

A lot of HL2 is like, a zombie throws a burning barrel at you... I wonder what I should do in this situation for the 10th time? HL1 offered tight corners, flanking and smart use of weapons like grenades and the magnum. Regular shootouts in HL2 are dull as gently caress and the gravity gun is a crutch for that.

I think HL2 was the best action game that had been made up to that point. It was one of the first games where I felt like the story was more than an afterthought, it was the first serious use of physics to affect gameplay, and it had a very cinematic feel for the time.

I enjoyed it well beyond the point I knew ep 3 was never coming, but these days games have done something in HL2 better, or better several times over.

HL2 pulled off large setpieces in a way that pretty much nothing else had. Strider fights in the bombed out city area were pretty unprecedented with that level of fidelity.

Amnesia comes close iirc. It's Thief without the ability to kill anything when things go south (and thus kinda boring imo)

BE is not very good, but with some mods to fix the rubbish AI and the patches and expansions, it claws its way above Civ6 as a playing experience. Alpha Centauri still shits on it from a great height though.

Civ 6's expansion, on the other hand, made the game's fundamental problems worse, especially the way you are railroaded into a certain playstyle. For those who don't know, the expansion introduced the ideas of "dark ages" and "golden ages". You earn an "era score" in each era (I think there are 7 or 8 in each playthrough), based on things that your Civ achieves. If you earn enough points, you get a "golden age" and some big bonuses in the next era, but if you don't earn enough you get a "dark age" with penalties. And of course the things that earn you "points" are arbitrary and you won't get enough if you decide to specialise your Civ in any particular area, because there are points for expansion things, building things, war things, tech things, exploration things, religious things etc, and unless you play RIGHT in the middle of the road and try to get pretty much all of them, gently caress you, dark age.

Worse, any score you earn above your golden age target doesn't count towards the next era's target. So if you do really well and pull ahead, you'll hit a dark age in the following era because half the stuff you did isn't counted by the game, essentially because you did it too early. This leads to players having to put off doing certain things until the next era to maximise the efficiency of points-earning in each era. I'll have a ship one turn from completing a circumnavigation (points for that), but pause it until the next technological era because I already hit my points quota this era and I want those points in the next. So my captain sits on his deck for 10 years twiddling his thumbs, because if he circumnavigates the globe too quickly he might plunge his country into a dark age. Like old timey sea captains didn't. This is not terribly immersive.

There's a few pretty cool set pieces yeah, but that's also the root of the problem, it's set up as a series of set piece puzzles that you can solve in only a limited number of ways. HL1 had some of that too but it wasn't as rigid, in HL2 it often feels like there's a solution that the programmers wanted you to go for, and that's what you should do, which isn't helped by how boring the non-gravity guns are and how poor the AI is compared to the soldiers of HL1 (who had a simple, rule-based AI, but at least felt more threatening than the combine cops).

Here's another one: Simcity 4 is the best citybuilder, much better than Cities Skylines.
