I seem to remember someone in this thread posting a list of perk decks and their efficacy but I forget where I saw it. How do you guys feel about these survey results?

https://www.reddit.com/r/paydaytheheist/comments/6u3yni/payday_2_perk_deck_tier_list_survey_results/

I picked up Anarchist but I don't love it, although I'm probably not using it right. My first deck was Crook, which feels much more like a straight upgrade as opposed to a weird new playstyle that I'm not familiar with.

I note that Armorer and Muscle are both usually rated pretty highly; I assume that still applies?

maswastaken

I guess you mean this post - some of it's a little out of date and I don't know of more recent one. Not quoting it because it's really drat long.

The survey seems mostly right but again, a little out of date. It is weird for them to make out that decks that work on Death Sentence are necessarily better than decks that don't. Crook absolutely crushes Rogue on every other difficulty and Armorer is absolutely only on the list for its invulnerability effect, which doesn't matter nearly as much on Death Wish where most enemies are doing about a third of their Death Sentence damage and you could actually survive a little more than just the next hit. Put Stoic in A tier as well, I guess.

Muscle's still pretty great - or so I hear.

I don't feel like Muscle's gonna be all that useful on DS unless you're combining it with aced HVT.

And as someone who used to main Armorer a lot, it's much tougher to use with the increased spawncaps. It's very map situational now; anything that has a lot of cover and corners to play with will work for Armorer but Anarchist with fire procs is still going to be superior.

I would shift Maniac and Ex-President down a tier in that Reddit list. I feel like Maniac is very limited based on what weapons you bring and Ex-President doesn't really hack it any more, again, because of the increased spawncaps. It was fun while it lasted.

Nowadays the best guess is that Big Bank is run by...ugh. This is going to get complicated. Let me find my effortpost.

Background
Once upon a time there was a Thing of Power. It was used by an alliance of three kings. The Thing of Power made these three basically immortal superbeings, along with other benefits. They had an alliance to share the Thing. This alliance was called "Kataru". (Kataru literally means "alliance" in ancient sumerian, to give you an idea of how old these guys are). Kataru ruled the world-basically they were the illuminati on steroids.

Karatu had, like, squires, pages, or officers or something, which were called "Watchers". One of the Watchers, a guy named Baldwin, tried to steal the Thing in about 1814 (this was when the White House was burned down). Baldwin failed to seize the Thing, and disappeared. This mess set off a power stuggle that caused Kataru to collapse- the Thing got sealed away, the kings split up and started stealing and hiding each other's junk like it was a bad breakup. One of the Kings came out mostly on top of this struggle, and he was still immortal, but he didn't have access to the Thing, and some of the other powerful artifacts used to access the Thing. This guy effectively took over Kataru and used it to seek out the other artifacts and engage in an extended secret conflict with the other group members.

(Since this time, it appears the Thing, or at least the key to accessing the Thing, has been referred to as "Baldwin's Lament". That name is dumb, so I'll keep calling it the Thing.)

Old Kataru members

It looks like Kataru consisted of the following members:

King 1: "Doctor King", aka the Dentist. Associated with that box with the eye of providence/pyramid on it, and The Diamond, which is also called the Demon Star.
The king who took over Kataru? That's the Dentist. Basically every antagonist group in the game, starting with Murkywater and including Gensec and the Garnet Group, seem to be working for him. He's apparently all-powerful, especially since we retrieved his box for him from the golden grin casino. He's also got the feds working for him at this point.

King 2: "King Elephant", no prizes for guessing his identity. Associated with a box with a bird's flight trail on it (but the bird is tiny, the whole thing looks like an abstract snake), and the Police Star.
It looks like the Elephant was trying to coach Bain to be a sort of new generation of Watcher, maybe. Whatever his plan was, it's largely fallen apart with Bain gone and with McKendrick having turned on him. It looks likely that he was the reason that the Diamond was in a museum, and the Dentist's Loot was in the Golden Grin. (for the record, a bunch of crossover heists that have us hitting Murkywater were originally going to be hitting the company for the Elephant.) It appears that the Elephant has deep ties to the actual American government, and it appears likely that the Big Bank and Golden Grin were both under his direct or indirect control (since the Dentist sent us to attack them).

King 3: "Scribe King", identity unknown. Associated with a box with a double triangle thing on it, and the "Fate Star". Might have gotten killed in the civil war, might be hidden, might be Bain. No one's sure. It would be odd, but is theoretically possible that Nathan Garnet, the secretive head of the Garnet Group, is this king.

Watchers: Basically pages, probably functionaries meant to keep the kings from abusing their power and keep the pact going, safeguarding the Lament. Baldwin was definitely a watcher, Cagliostro was probably one. It's indicated that by 1905, all of the Watchers are "gone", due to the collapse of the old alliance. Some lines indicate Bain is also a Watcher- it's unclear who made him one, but it's implied that he's associated with the Scribe King.

Lindenhurst: Referred to as a "regent", which is someone who fills in when a king is unavailable. Possibly filling in for the "scribe king". Lindenhurst possessed an item, the "Amulet of the Perseids," which he passed on to Duke's grandfather, Desmond, shortly before being killed in 1905. Duke says he was killed by another regent, which doesn't make much sense.

Right Now
We're going for the Thing(aka Baldwin's Lament). The Thing may or may not trigger the apocalypse. We have all three of the Kings' boxes (whatever those are), and the Amulet. It seems like the Dentist has at least one of the three "stars", and, well, Bain. And the police. And Kento. Did I mention Kento appears to be running Murkywater for the Dentist? well, he is.

Stealth the entire thing. Once all the bags are secured, the zipline can be set up. The heist goes loud as soon as Floyd smashes through the skylight. Twitch drives away and Bain already told Bile he's not needed so there's no escape for a while. You repeat the server room hack, only spamming with the manager's computer, only one try and actually you need to hack 4 computers within a very narrow time window. After that...

That’s so obvious I’d almost be disappointed if it were the case - I mean, the Overdrill is there for anybody patient enough to go after it. At this point, I’d prefer having to keep something from coming out in waves.

EDIT: I had a crazy thought - a voice could come from the center saying “CHOOSE THE FORM OF YOUR DESTROYER”, followed by waves of enemies textured with dollar bills that fire gold bars at the heisters. I mean, they wouldn’t know what the gently caress, mang.

Armorer and Muscle are both solid all around choices yes. The big thing I disagree with in this ranking of perk decks is that it doesn't properly value team synergies. A crew chief is there to provide flat bonuses to his buddies, not personally be a badass. This is a good role for teammates who maybe aren't the best at fps's. Another one criminally under-rated in those rankings is Gambler. A gambler's ammo box pickups give the whole team ammo and health. Y'know, the two things so important to the team they're what the main deployables provide. It's *pretty* powerful to constantly give your team health and ammo if you know how to leverage that, and it just gets better with a crew chief making you and everyone else more durable while you do it. Both are legit still drat useful things to have on Death Sentence/One Down/wtfever. These benefits grow geometrically when the team's all building around this kinda stuff. If you know your team has a gambler who brings ammo bags consistently, your kingpin can make a less ammo-efficient weapon choice safely, etc.

Yes, eventually. We're hoping to put the playerside changes on a separate toggle, because it's going to be impossible to nerf things as much as we're going to need to without making some people very upset.

Laputanmachine posted:

What's Locke's role in all of this?

Locke is now completely trustworthy. Locke was trusted by Bain with his "quest", and Bain staged Locke's betrayal to get the gang away from DC when he felt there was someone getting ready to backstab the crew. The ambush in Alaska was actually a surprise to both Bain and Locke, and the subsequent heists outside of DC were just to keep the crew safe.

In reality, Locke was a contractor character meant to paper over some plot holes and act as a contractor for missions that were planned for other characters. After he gained meme status among players, he was used to replace Bain, because Simon Viklund, Bain's voice actor, no longer works for overkill. This required very rapidly retconning him from the least trustworthy character (who was probably going to betray the gang), into someone Bain trusted enough to use as a decoy and actually mislead the crew over. He's kind of a tonal mess; the lines for him in his introduction make him several kinds of amoral war criminal, and his later lines are all "sure I love money, but not as much as I love you, dear fellow friends!". His South African accent and slang are also pretty harmful in his coordinator/announcer/mission control role.

Those doors are supremely suspicious. Big Bank, The Diamond, and Scarface Mansion all have these suspicious voids in the map where a big hidden vault can be cleanly dropped in a future update.

We're looking at it. Snipers are a particular mess because the underlying structure doesn't mesh well with the core pd2 gameplay, there are several different "types" of rifle, and graze just takes a big 'ol dump on balance. Unknownmerc developed a good basic sniper rebalance mod, iirc. I'm hoping to use his stuff as a rubric.

edit: I've had a conversation with merc about it; it will be a complicated process, because we'd need to balance sniper damage partially against the CD enemy health values, which are much lower than DS, but are still intentionally an ammo economy constraint. We've also gotta figure out how to balance the semiautos against the bolt-feds, and there are three or four "tiers" of bolt-fed to balance as well. Then there's graze, messing with everything...

The main issues I see with weapon balance as is are:
Global pickup is way too loving low in combination with current spawn rates. I may not need to fix this at all since Crackdown already adjusts spawn rates. Jules' fixes being largely reactionary to people's complaints means we have been getting piecemeal buffs but I may remove/tone down some of these.
Barrel extensions not really mattering for stats beyond accuracy. While I don't necessarily want a return to the old "your gun sucks unless you specifically have this attachment to bump it up high enough in damage" I would like to see it matter more.
I have problems with the way Overkill has chosen to handle certain weapons (Flamethrowers, the OG Minigun, light ARs) but the way to tackle those is either outside of the scope of my LUA knowledge (Flamethrowers) or debatable/not necessary (Minigun and light ARs).

you can attach almost any stat modifier to a barrel so you could treat them like the G3 assault kit/DMR kit in terms of changing a lot of stats, and then whenever anyone complains just tell them it's better than whatever bullshit jules is serving up that day :v:

doing that would let people choose the visual model they want and get the performance they expect based on tier. I don't know any other plausible way to make them useful without turning one specific setup into the one true build for every weapon, but you're more up to date on that than I am. perfect balance is a chimera anyway.

Ammo pickup is garbage at the moment, yes, and makes certain builds and weapons very much unviable - eg the classic Akimbo Rogue build. That's already not as strong as it used to be in the heyday of dodge, but would still be fun to use with better pickup. DMRs, too, were infamously nerfed in this way and the developers have steadily refused to even consider any sort of reversion.

Fortunately I managed to find a mod that buffs global ammo pickup and the game is way more playable with those values.

Waiter, this band keeps shooting pearls at me.
Revisiting the long guide which may be outdated. Transport tiering:

quote:

I've ordered the heists by perceived difficulty, easiest first.

Harbor
There is a secluded area when you go into the alley on the left after spawning, which is easy to defend and rather close to the trucks.

Underpass
There are 3 easy spots to defend. 1) From your spawn, if you turn 180° and stick to the right, you will come to a possible escape zone in an alley. 2+3) The corridors of the overpass.

Downtown
After picking up your first loot bag, Bain will announce whether to expect a helicopter or van. The van arrives at your initial spawn point, the helicopter arrives on the opposite side. You can move the bags into either building because you can then use the skyway to move bags across.

Crossroads
The wine store has a small room with a desk providing cover. But any other store works as well.

Park
Partial cover is given by the hole in the road. Alternatively, just stay close to the trucks.

I would re order them as

Downtown (easiest)
Park
Harbor
Underpass
Crossroads (hardest)

I am basing this off of fastest 5 bag clear with saws and bombs.

Downtown and Harbor are slotted where they are because of the escape tells they have. Park overall is the most basic. Underpass and Crossroads can be sniper hell and from my experience civs are bullet magnets on these two specific jobs.

Downtown and Harbor would be the most difficult if there were no escape tells however. Harbor would probably be toughest due to being such a condensed area with all those specials.
