I felt like I was moving really slowly, then I rolled with a guy on his second week and everything was easy. I probably swept him close to a dozen times in one round and caught my first bow and arrow choke ever on an actually resisting opponent.

It's very very hard to self-evaluate your progress against other people who are also progressing around the same rate as yourself. Don't ever lose hope.

The strength program I’ve used is Tactical Barbell. Yes, the name is horrifying but it’s a very simple, straightforward program similar to starting strength but with more periodization, specifically designed to achieve decent strength results without ruining other workout or training you’re doing (hence, “tactical” though ugh that word). It’s not really any more complicated than 5x5 or SS. 5x5 is just a crap SS ripoff, and I like TB over SS because the periodization seems to give better results and the lifts overall end up being easier on me most weeks. It’s pretty modular and scalable, a lot more so than most popular programs. Though it’s lame the guy wants you to pay for the pdf because there a plenty of equally good programs out there. If you can get a hold of it for free Id say give it a look. 5/3/1 is another good program too, and totally free afaik

Right now my psychological goal is to just maintain position, fight the submission, and try for a sub myself only if I am in a very comfortable position. I know I can't be purely defensive forever, but I feel like there is an advantage in learning to protect yourself over everything else

Pop in at an open mat at a different gym sometime and see how much better your A-game works against someone your own level who hasn't had months of practice at defending it.

That's a toss up of getting hemmed up and feeling horrible or executing your game and feeling great. At least gauging versus new guys you'll see how much farther you've progressed.

I rolled with Levi Jones-Leary yesterday, he's was virtually unshiftable from any position he decided to hold. Won nearly everything at brown belt this year, and he manhandled our competitive brown belt even though he's 10kg lighter. Now he has his black he's one to watch. His next competition is going to be the LA Pro.

One funny thing that happens is that as you train you learn to play the game with your own limited set of tools instead of just blindly grappling and this leads to getting swept and submitted more since your partners can actually read your intentions. For a while at least, as you develop your bjj language you do actually get worse at it.

I wanted to follow up on the strength and conditioning discussion. Despite some exceptional grapplers such as Marcelo deemphasizing separate strength and conditioning work, the vast majority of elite grapplers and MMA competitors do serious strength and conditioning training. For example at our gym, people not only lift seriously but they work with outside s&c coaches and facilities including in the past Martin Rooney, Sports Science Lab, Parisi Speed School etc. It's not just bro-lifting but serious focused s&c training with external consultants specifically for MMA/grappling competition. One of the biggest hurdles I have in the sport is the fact I never know whom to turn to when it comes to advice and continuous training when it comes to performance. I went to a trainer once and didn't trust the guy knew what he was talking about so itched the program he was offering. What is something that I should be aware of when looking for Strength and Conditioning Coaching?

Any of you guys using Danaher's back control stuff? My instructor has been viewing it and sharing parts of what he's learned in class. I've already found it incredibly useful. I've changed by grips away from the traditional seatbelt (which I never much liked anyway) and instead use a choking arm and an arm to control one of my opponent's arms. I also focus heavily on using my head to control my opponent's. I one-arm RNC'd a guy last week, normally this would happen by fluke or if my opponent was super green. But my instructor submits the lot of us with a single arm on a regular basis, its wild.

Lol, I think you're just in one of those periods in your training where it's hard to gauge your improvement (and may feel like you're getting worse) a friend of mine said that feeling lasted nearly the entirety of his time at purple belt. Or you could be massively depressed. Probably the first thing.
