Would've been a baffling wreck of a non-plot point without that DLC, though.

Final Fantasy XV was an early access game in all but name when it launched and boy oh boy was it poo poo if "look at really impressive environments" and "do hunt missions in an open world, yo" and "roadtrip w/ bros" didn't do it for you, because the story, pacing, and worldbuilding was basically non-existent

I haven't completely finished the game yet, but as someone who started with the all-DLC-included PC version: I'd wait until the other DLCs come out.

Thanks to his DLC, Prompto's storyline's now one of the most complete parts of the game. There are some great story moments, but overall the plot's still missing a lot of beats. The second half feels really rushed, and there are still large sections of the plot which are under-explained or make no sense. The end of Chapter 9 in particular is trash both from a storytelling and gameplay pov. Gameplay-wise everything's good, though (aside from the end of 9) -- I heard Chapter 13 was a mess at first, but it's fine now.

The FFXV team seems to write decent story when they're not rushing to shove a game out the door, so I'm hopeful the other DLCs will flesh things out further.

Yasumi Matsuno was one of the writers for FFXII but had to leave the project due to health issues.

You can tell his influence on the first half of the game when there's like a dozen different conspiracies to keep track of but then they just fizzle out way before the game actually ends.

He was writer/director/producer until he stepped down. After he left, they split directorial duties among two people and had a dedicated producer. FFXIII and FFXIV 1.0 had similar problems where development was bottle-necked by having too few people in a number of key management roles.

To clarify, FFXII is a perfect Matsuno plot, you play a bunch of people that are doing things that will never be in the history books. Every Ivalice game to a degree has this sort of plot. The actual War of the Lions in FFT is not, in fact, what Ramza is involved in, it's the backdrop to the games actual plot. Ivalice has a big theme of "Important things overlooked by History." Look at the end of the game, Basch has to pretend to be Gabranth and the story becomes that Larsa stopped his brother. that's how history will remember the final battle. Everything about the Occuria, Nethicite, Ashe's involvement, those things History will brush over.

FFXV got it's promised summer update today, so there's Dark Souls-y player ghosts running around and you can customize Noctis into an avatar from the Comrades expansion and etc. And of course on PC, you can put Prompto in Cindy's outfit and replace Ignis with Donald Duck riding a mech, so I guess PC is the Real Experience now.

Well I mean tbf they won't appear in the history books because nothing they did actually mattered to the events going around them and they ended up doing what the villain wanted to do anyway.

But Venat is not really the main villain though, he just allied with people he considered to be the most capable at realizing his goals. It just happened that Cid was a raving lunatic and Vayne was obsessed with absolute power. If the party hadn't stopped Vayne, it would've resulted in an all-out war between Rozarria and Archadia and Rabanastre would've been annihilated in the process.

I think the idea is that to Joe on the streets it was just another messy Archaedian succession because the party kept the conflict from escalating beyond posturing by if nothing else scuttling the WMD development program.

The team is probably throwing ideas on the wall to see what sticks. They can use whatever works for their next game, such as character creation, co-op, etc. Management is pushing games-as-a-service so I suspect their next game is going to have a heavy online co-op element with live updates.

If anything, they're playing catch up since the industry is already heading in that direction. Many games, such as Dying Light, can either be played like a single-player game or as co-op game with the developer making periodic content updates. In particular, all the big RPG developers are making MMO-lite Destiny style games, such as Bioware with Anthem. Even Bethesda is making more multiplayer centric RPGs.

but let's be honest that game is only good for the dressup and the melons cutscene

I just want to mention that despite being a JRPG, Resonance of Fate may have one of the top 5 worst escort missions in gaming. When its bad enough the level your game gets in the big crossover game is that stage with characters assuring players it wont be so hard you done goofed for an RPG

So for people who've played FFXV, and have actually turned it on in the last couple days to check out that ability to change Noctis' appearance: do you have any of the clothes from Comrades? I started playing the game just today, and while my enjoyment of the game goes up greatly when I can switch out Noctis' model for somebody with actual personality, I seem to be stuck with the default Galahadan clothes and I'd love to have a bit more variety.

By the way, my 'after about an hours' playtime' review: This game's story needs to be less sure of itself, while the game's mechanics and balancing need to be more sure of themselves. This game is terrified of being in any way hard; it started me with a bunch of gear that seems overpowered (as well as some gear that's DEFINITELY overpowered), then gave me an extremely overpowered greatsword for going slightly off the beaten path, and after one in-game day of doing the things the game actually asks of me I'm several levels above the enemies. I want the game to have some challenge, but I don't know if that's possible.

Meanwhile, the game's story doesn't seem to grasp that there's a reason all the other Final Fantasy games either start with a spectacle to get you interested in the story or were simple enough to drop you right into the action and let you learn what the story is later (or doing both, like FFVI). The first bit of actual gameplay outside of the tutorial is pushing a car with a bunch of characters you don't yet have reason to care about, and it just... doesn't work, at all. Currently, the most compelling and engaging voiced role in the game is Florence Welch.

You probably have an accessory called the Nixperience Band -- equip it on someone to stop getting auto-leveled up when resting, that way you can do whatever and not eventually be insta-killing everything. Also how fun you find the gameplay has less to do with challenge and more to do with how much you like warping, at least if you stick with playing Noctis.

It's a Final Fantasy, it can afford a slow-burn opening -- you know there's going to be explosions and cataclysmic drama eventually. Calm down and enjoy the small moments.
