If I had to actually rank them, 1 PS4 2 PS2 3 PSX 4 PS3 5 PSP 6 Vita PSX/PS2 were huge for me like most people. So many awesome memories and new experiences. Last generation I was 90% 360 even though Sony had a few exclusives that I felt I couldn’t miss out on. Sony took a long time to get their messy PS3 launch back on track unfortunately. 5 and 6 are close for reasons even though I never really used either much. Nintendo portables were always my go to. The PSP though felt very innovative at the time. It was also the first time I ever had the ability to have portable porn and that was mind blowing as a teen. The Vita is a better piece of hardware easily, but I barely enjoyed the games at all and it has collected dust for years. Sony has always had a good rep with me. Their stuff always feels cool to use and “new” without trying to change their entire style every few years. They’re consistent in their strengths and weaknesses and lately on the console front they’re learning to embrace those strengths.

I can't actually think of a Playstation I don't love, the only model of any of them I don't/haven't owned is the PSP-e1k. There are great games on every system and the hardware is so satisfying to work on (aside from the pspgo's backlight fix which is a huge pain in the rear end) so hopefully people will be able to enjoy them for a long long time.

Pretty clear that PS4 is a slam dunk for me, partly because of the games themselves but also because I think I'm more involved with it and its fans, e.g. I never participated in a thread like this before for a console and the system's friend system means I have a connection to IRL friends even when not actively playing with them. And the games and community reinforce each other, not just because I appreciate and understand games better when talking about them with goons but because I play different games entirely through goon recommendations. Back in the day finding out what games to play usually meant going to a games review site and sorting from Highest to Lowest for scores and then reading reviews to make a call. Probably also helps that I game exlusively on PS4. In earlier generations I also had Microsoft or Nintendo systems or played on PC to split my time so no one platform stood out as definitively. The Red Dead trailer was so great. The graphics and animations are incredible. I love that you can actually control your horse properly this time. Also PS4 is the only Sony console I’ve ever owned so uh, beats me about the others. I still have idiot childhood rivalry bias against the PSX/2.

PS2 would be GOAT if it wasn't for hardware failures, terrible image quality, and being notably underpowered compared to it's competitors. PSX was a great designed console, with the greatest boot screen ever, but a lot of it's games have aged poorly. The PSP I didn't have a lot of fond memories with, mostly due to the lack of second analog, speaker being on the analog stick (wtf?), and many games being disappointing. I never owned a PS3. PS Vita is a very capable hardware with good analog sticks and a gorgeous OLED screen (gently caress people who prefer the revision), but once you get through the must play library of Persona 4: Golden and Falcom games it is pretty underwhelming. PS4 has a wonderful UI and a great lineup, but in the age of Steam it's harder and harder for a console to stand out to me.

Component cables are cheap and easy to get for your Playstation 2.

PS4 for sure. Some of the best games I've ever played (Blooddddbornee) and share function lets you capture all those funny glitches and cool stuff on the fly.

I think a lot of people are conflating a couple of years of great games with the PS4 being a good console. I don't really think there's anything particularly noteworthy about the PS4, it's not really a nice looking console in the way the PS3 or Xbone S are, it doesn't play 4k Blu Rays, its wireless is still hot garbage, etc. The OS is a pretty big step down from the PS3 too, which is probably my biggest knock against it. It looks like an adult version of a Fisher Price console or something, the XMB was a lot cleaner and nicer looking, and in lieu of being able to create your own custom groups, being able to organize poo poo into premade folders made a much more tidy look. The exclusives are really what make the console stand out, God of War, Uncharted, Horizon, Bloodborne obviously but that's like four games. I guess Until Dawn is an exclusive also and I loved it but it's not anything that makes me think GOAT system. tl;dr version: I think the last few years of games have been exceptional, which gives people the impression that the PS4 is an uncommonly good system when it's mediocre at best.

Sakurazuka posted:The games are are that matter though? I mean, not really when you're talking about which console was best. And even then I don't think any system was more prolific in great exclusive games than the PS2. Like a bunch of great games from the last five years are all multiplat and you can play them on any console (or a PC even). By that metric the Xbone is a better console than the 360 or the OG Xbox (lol it's not). Professor Beetus fucked around with this message at 18:10 on Aug 9, 2018 |

Consoles are defined by the games. If it was all about hardware, the Xbox One X would be king. But none of us truly believe that.

I mean, of course the PS4 is going to be the best at a lot of things just because of the progression of technology, but to me the amazing leap the PS2 represented from stuff that was not really that old was incredibly impressive. Jesus, compare Madden 94 to Madden 2001.

The only downside to the XMB was not being able to organize your games/movies/etc manually. They even put the XMB on at least one of their bluray players it should really be an option on ps4/vita.

I've enjoyed my PS4 and I was an early adopter, I just think looking back I just thing of a few games that were good, some of which I played on my PC or Xbone. The PS3 was a lot weirder and more memorable in a lot of ways and I appreciate that more as a metric for "favorite consoles."

It’s hard to overstate how groundbreaking the original PlayStation was. Using optical media caught Nintendo with their pants down, and they ended up stealing Final Fantasy from Nintendo because of it. Its heavy emphasis on 3D caught Sega with their pants down, who had to staple a 3D kludge on their Saturn. Its horned gamepad became the new paradigm of controllers. It immediately became the gathering place for third party developers.

Yeah, almost every couple sole has good games. And things get muddied over the years as exclusives become rarer and rarer. To me every system has a certain "vibe" and "feel" to it. Which is very important to me. I feel this is what makes Sony so threatening. While Nintendo systems feel like quality toys and Microsoft consoles feel like a PC hybrid, Sony systems feel like your just going to by a DVD/CD. Like what you have is the default/defacto standard of video games and there is no specific market for the system as it is for everyone.

I am pretty blown away by some of the effects of the new RDR trailer for instance, but unless the next gen of consoles is just straight up "we're including VR headsets now and pushing it as the new thing (and magically making it affordable)" the PS5 is going to seem like a mild revision at best looking at games alone. I don't think that any other Sony console was as revolutionary in the continued evolution of games.

The original Playstation will always be my favourite thank to many great memories that haven't really been surpassed. Playing Cash Bandicoot that first Christmas morning on my new console, finishing Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy 7 at my grandparents house on summer vacation, multiplayer games of Tekken and Bushido Blade and Alpha 3 between friends, stumbling through the Tomb Raider games with my dad waiting on the next months edition of Gamesmaster for the concluding part of a walkthrough, demo-discs, Metal Gear Solid, Tony Hawk, really weird games like Oddworld or Mr Domino or Tobal No. 1. Playstation 4 is incredible don't get me wrong but I don't think it'll ever top my memories of the original console

the ps2 existed on that sweet spot between exclusivity, affordability, and creativity there was so much on that console that couldn't be gotten anywhere else and many of the industry's most inventive and definitive titles got their start on it also full backwards compatibility, and the psx's library was not small

Man, it really loving sucks that Sony just up and abandoned the PS1 Classics program after Suikoden 2. There are hundreds of them and you can only play them on PSP, PS3, or Vita! I would be so happy if I could download some of those old Classics I bought back in the day, maybe buy a few more JPN cards and import some of that good poo poo like Einhander or Bushido Blade.

Morby posted:PS2 and SNES are my votes for GOAT, but PS4 gets close to their level in terms of exclusive content and just sheer amount of titles (both exclusive and non-exclusive). I think this is where my expectations might be skewed because the modern dev cycle has really limited the amount of quality AAA titles that can come out in a console's life cycle. Like, we had three Uncharted games and Last of Us from Naughty Dog on the PS3, and so far on a console that's been out since 2013 we've got one and a half Uncharted games and we're still waiting on the next Last of Us. Same for God of War, four titles on the PS3 and one on the PS4 that didn't even hit until near the console's fifth birthday. I'll always support quality over quantity but I legitimately think that all the Uncharted games on the PS3 were worth playing, and while I didn't much care for God of War, I think most people still thought that 3 out of 4 of those were pretty drat great.
