Although Gibbs voted for Trump because he’s a “can-do guy” and acted like he could “get things done, and that’s true,” what the Ohio farmer did not realize was that he and others like him would be thrown into a battle they never asked for. “What we didn’t realize was that we were going to be put on the frontlines of this trade war and demonize our number one customer,” Gibbs said. “I’ve got a cracked pelvis just from getting my butt kicked based on these prices.”

That's a lol.

quote:

Soybean Farmer: Trump's Trade War Has 'Devastated' Industry

Things got worse for soybean farmers hit by President Donald Trump’s ongoing trade war with China on Friday after soybean futures dropped nearly 40 points on the stock market.

The price drop only added to the overall “devastating” effects that farmers say they’re experiencing since China imposed a 25 percent tariff on soybeans, in response to Trump's own punitive tarriffs, last month.

"The effect of the trade war has been very devastating on soybean farmers here,” Ohio soybean farmer Chris Gibbs told CNBC Friday. “We've taken a 20 percent drop in price,"

Following a U.S. Department of Agriculture prediction of a possible record soybean harvest of more than 4.5 billion bushels for the 2018-19 crop year, soybean futures dropped more than 4.5 percent.

“What we’re seeing with market action here today only exacerbates the fact that we have lost our number one customer because of the trade wars,” Gibbs said.

Soybeans, used for cooking oil and animal feed, among other things, make up about 60 percent of the $20 billion of agricultural exports from the U.S. to China each year, or about 37.5 million metric tons.

Over the past few months, Trump has imposed billions of dollars worth of tariffs on China. He’s also issued tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum, among other products, from Europe, Canada and Mexico. Since the administration’s new tariffs that began in June, corn and soybean crop prices have been on a significant downward decline and several other industries, including New England lobster fishing, have been hit hard.

In June, economists estimated Trump's tariffs against the major U.S. allies could cost the country 400,000 jobs.

Trump has taken to Twitter to defend his actions. “Tariffs are the greatest!” Trump said last month. “Either a country which has treated the United States unfairly on Trade negotiates a fair deal, or it gets hit with Tariffs. It’s as simple as that - and everybody’s talking! Remember, we are the 'piggy bank' that’s being robbed. All will be Great!”

Even the president’s $12 billion emergency aid package for farmers, if and when it lands, won’t make up for all the lost revenue the country’s crop growers have endured.

Gibbs said he would need $25,000 of the aid in order to preserve his 560-acre farm, which produces soybeans, corn, and hay, along with raising cattle. Said he has “no idea” if he’ll get that much.

“I can’t see that the taxpayers would fund us in that amount, particularly with a policy where it’s a self-inflicted pain by our own government which drew retaliation from the Chinese and then lowered our prices.”

Very real. The worst one I ever saw, this guy at my battalion's wife was all Support Are Troops: care packages every week, Skype calls constantly, the whole nine. About a week before we got back from Iraq, suddenly not a word from her. We get back to our base, she's not there at the welcoming, and when he gets home the house is empty. Except for a pile of used condoms in what used to be their bedroom, meth smoking paraphernalia all over the house, and divorce papers in the mailbox. Plus his checking account was drained. I'm fuzzy on the details but I think he had stupidly given her power of attorney and she used it to fill out both sides of the divorce papers, too, but that might have just been a rumor.

E: V yeah. I had to give one of my PFC's weekend duty for months to keep him from driving to Vegas and marrying a local stripper. He skipped the chain of command and complained to the battalion CO and SgtMaj, who reamed him out for being a moron and told him I should get a commendation for preventing him from ruining his own life.

If you're married in the military you get a ton of benefits for it. It doesn't attract people who want to get married, it makes them

It's not about getting a higher allowance, it's about getting an allowance at all. Married soldiers get to move out of the barracks and there's a ton of quality of life improvements that go with that. Things like not having an nco checking your room for dust on the door sill at 5am.

there are so many tens of thousands of these young dumb couples in those little towns 10-100 miles away from any major 'southern' city. life is so loving horrible and boring there that they do the high school fuckthing, possibly get a baby in the mix, and then they get an article in the Bald Knob Daily Caller about how Jeremiah dreams of joining the army and they're headed to the big city jacksonville land baby

lol at that story

i thought the power of attorney thing would be common? when i worked in lending i would occassionaly get a wife submitting an application with them signing as power of attorney. i figured it made sense: if the wife is not working everything has to be done with the husbands credit.

mostly i dealt with single guys living on base who would immediately lease a motorcycle at usurious rates

The military is full of dumb people. Like before we deployed we had multiple classes about financial responsibility, culminating in the guy begging with tears in his eyes not to give your wife that you met last week a total POA no matter what she says. Doesn’t matter, dipshits still ignored the classes and got payday loans, preordered cars, the whole nine.

Which is so dumb because a 15 year old motorcycle is cheap to maintain and can be found in good condition for a tenth the price.

He also claimed he was getting screwed on his pay by the army but it turned out he overdrew his account by checking his balance multiple times in one day looking to see if his deposit came and ate up his whole check with atm fees causing him to overdraft at $25 a pop.

that reminds me of one of the shittiest bank-related scams of the financial crisis were people barely skating by would make debits and deposits in the same day, and at the end of the day when the bank did the daily close they would intentionally count all the debits first to force an overdraft fee before counting the deposits, regardless of when in the day it actually happened.

ATM's are owned by individual banks. If it's not your bank's ATM, you usually get charged when trying to look at/do anything with your account. Every bank I've met with has been extremely clear about this when you sign up for an account.

How do ATMs work elsewhere?

As a European, they don't do this, because we have at least the appearance of financial regulation (at the consumer level anyway). You also don't get charged for withdrawals from any ATM unless you have some extremely poo poo account

yeah, those generic atms you see at bars or gas stations or whatever, the second you press "yes" on the screen warning you that you'll be charged for this atm, you get charged 3.50 or 2.00 or however much. its awful but sometimes its convenient. like, say, when i buy weed at work.

also god drat that poor son of a bitch. i'll admit i was VERY dumb with money when i was young rather than just mildly dumb with money like i am now, but i made the incredibly wise decision to just turn off overdrafting on my debit card the first time i got in trouble with that. smartest poo poo i've ever done, if i dont have the money for something, welp, i'll make do, but if nothing else making it so that i COULD NOT OVERDRAFT NO MATTER WHAT has kept me out of some vicious cycles ive seen other people go through.
