Being "not-something" also makes you inherently defined by that something you're in opposition to. So we've ended up with an inverted political dynamic in capitalism where liberals are defined by conservatives and not the other way around.

the Progressive Party of Vermont does complain that Bernie hasn't helped them as much as he could or should have

Bernie's reason for running as an independent is mostly a grudge he's held against Pete Diamondstone for like five decades now

it's pretty stupid, but whatever, he's not going to change and anyone who cares about it now is even more stupid

I hope Bernie runs as a democrat in 2020, gets elected president, and then right after he's sworn in he announces he's leaving the party.

Pete and Bernie started the Liberty Union Party in the seventies and Pete kicked Bernie out for not being left enough and Bernie's been an "independent" ever since.

Pete then went on to run for office (often multiple offices on the same ballot) every election and never won anything. The capstone of his electoral career was the 2014 gubernatorial debate where he showed up in jorts, accused the governor of aiding the oppression of Palestine, and said the workers at the IBM plant in the state should violently seize the means of production.

now this is interesting, there's been an ongoing subtopic in here about how Warren isn't as leftist as some people think, and it looks like Warren figured out that she needs to carve out her own niche between the left and the center because there's more popular candidates than her in both spheres

She seems to be going directly to the middle between the two areas: a kinder, gentler capitalism

https://twitter.com/ezraklein/status/1029725112310947840

Undoubtedly this plan is an improvement over the status quo but it still props up capitalism. And I think this is going to end up being more palatable to a bunch of centrist Democrats than full-out democratic socialism (even as the worship nerds whine that it's not really socialism)

The final paragraph from the Vox article (byline Matty) stands out:

quote:

Warren’s bet is that at a time when the political right is increasingly not even bothering to pretend to offer economic solutions anymore, America can pull off the same trick a second time — offering the public not a huge new expansion of government programs, but a revival of the midcentury stakeholder capitalism that once built a middle class so prosperous that the idea of surging mass interest in socialism was unthinkable.
