They should really make all those prize figures round numbers and cut the remainders for even out the bottom placements a little. 10 mil bucks instead of 10.8 as a grand prize probably wouldn't have any of the winners complaining very much, and could have 9-16th place essentially earning 20k more bux per player. Gotta spread some of the wealth to the little guys.

Does going into grand finals in the winners' bracket confer any advantage?

Valve has put themselves into a dumb position where if the crowdfunded grand prize doesn't grow every year then it looks like their game is dying. And also they started off trying to be the biggest grand prize ever so the initial payout structures of TI1 & 2 were even worse, but now they are in a position where they can barely improve it without making it seem like the scene is moving backwards. Usually the lower bracket finals and the grand finals are on the same day, right? Lower bracket team could face playing eight games straight. Welp beaten

I kinda wish the upper bracket team got selection priority (choice of pick order/side in games 1/3/5), but apparently everyone's of the opinion that "not having to play an elimination Bo3 in the morning just to get to the grand final" is enough of an advantage.

Yeah, but restructuring the distribution of the prize doesn't depreciate the value of the total prize pool. It still ends up being an overall larger prize pool than previous years. If the scene moving backwards were a legitimate fear, there are also fail-safes (such as restructuring the profit to prize pool ratio slightly) that could be worked in. Paying out better to teams that didn't place as well also reinforces the scene, as it gives more incentive for tier 2 and 3 teams to compete. Overwatch has this problem, where you are either in the big game, or the no game.

I think the winner of this year's EVO smash tournament split his payout with 5/7th place since they got like 130$.

But for fighting games the total yearly prize pool is at least somewhat evenly spread along the year across many events, EVO is not like TI that accounts for 90+% of all Dota 2 earnings. For Street Fighter EVO isn't even the highest paying single tournament.

Though per-player cut is still probably notably more than in fighting games, Dota 2 being a much bigger sponsor business.

nahaz tweeted out that there were two sides to every story after the punishment for using two coaches for drafting was handed down. he meant it completely literally but anyone with half a brain knows when someone says "we haven't heard both sides" they mean the side we have heard from isn't being entirely truthful. then he whined when people dogpiled him for reading the tweet the way most people would.
