Tuna sashimi with black garlic, frisee, some kind of puree, and seaweed salad. Looks delicious to me. Assuming the puree works with the rest of that, it probably tastes great too. It's even a reasonable serving served in a fairly normal bowl.

Yeah I wasn’t sure about that one because the plating is good but the brown cluster thing is displeasing to me

Honestly the part that puts me off is how drat tiny the whole thing looks, either because it's actually that tiny or because the bowl is enormous. What is this, sashimi for ants?

I am a buttertroll, I expect at least a quarter of a tuna on my plate when I order sashimi.

The thing with those tiny servings is they're often part of 7-9 course tasting menu, so each one is small but you're still getting a ton of food.

Plain donuts used to be significantly more dense and less sweet than today's cake donuts. More like the potato donuts we used to make occasionally when I was a kid. That said, the toasting part of the rarebit does make me think they may have just been talking about a goddamn bagel, yes.

Toasting plain cake donuts results in something super delicious. Toasting cider donuts even more so.

This banana water tasted like the peel of very underripe bananas, rather than the artificial banana flavor I was expecting.

Bottle says it's using "banana extract" which is probably why. Also the Japanese part of the label says it's "Banana Milk" flavour, not Banana as the English does.

I’ve toasted pieces of pound cake for part of a dessert before; comes out pretty nice, actually!

I’m curious about why cottage cheese showed up in so drat many of these old recipes. Easy no-meat means of protein? Cheap alternative for something else? Dairy farmer unions?

Cottage cheese tastes good, OP.

Also if you make thick slices of cake and toast them in the oven, you'll basically have cake rusk which is incredibly good with chai.

My senior year in college I interned at a record company, and also worked at an apple orchard. I was allowed to take home as many leftover cider donuts that I could carry. I would bring them to Polygram and toast them up every Monday morning. Got a solid A+ on my internship semester.

It really is. The article goes on to elaborate slightly:

it's regular garlic bulbs that have been subjected to a slow low cook until it undergoes a chemical transformation. if you really like the stuff it's worth looking in to how to make it, isn't that hard. you can do it in a rice cooker. takes a while but it's better than paying a crazy price for it.

Yeah basically you toss garlic in a rice cooker on keep warm for like, a week. There's probably some more to it but that's more or less the method.

It tastes pretty different, more funky and complex and a lot less strong than raw garlic. It costs more cos it takes time and labour to make
