I'm kinda afraid to read the sequels to Dune with having been burnt on this stuff before. For some reason I think I enjoyed the Jessica part of the book more than Paul.

This, but it's important to note that 2+3 are a package deal. They're basically the same story and it would be weird as gently caress to finish 2 and not read 3. 3 is fine except for the loving attack-tiger scheme.

I don't think 2 and 3 are a package deal at all. 2 is a perfect coda to paul and jessica's story and 3 is a bunch of mumbo jumbo with a fresh set of garbage characters. The first two books are very character focused and the rest of them are almost single minded about exploring ideas over relationships, which only seems to work with God Emperor in my own humble. Anyone on the fence should read Dune: Messiah, it's a moving book.

It's almost like opinions can vary, and you should just read them and form your own, rather than being enslaved to the internet's conventional wisdom. Like, despite the consensus (and the fact they're indeed objectively pulp trash) I still enjoyed the Butlerian Jihad books.

The Butlerian Jihad books are bad star wars zeu novels with hyperspace replaced with "foldspace". Calling them pulp is also factually wrong as they contain don't even reach those low standards and have very few of the elements associated with pulp.

Well whatever the term is for cheap, poorly written, but entertaining, trash. Maybe a better analogy would be that KJA is the Rob Liefeld of the written word - all of the parts are there, and in isolation some parts show that he has some skill and he has the general idea, but some parts are just off and he can't pull it together convincingly.

It's not entertaining. While I'm glad that you can squeeze some enjoyment blood out of those poo poo stones, they're terrible books by every metric and you should be jihaded for enjoying them

So be it. But my point is that, even if everyone tells you something is bad, and even if they're right, don't let that alone stop you. I wouldn't have paid full price for them, but I saw them at a thrift shop and I was like, it's worth 75 cents to find out for myself, because the subject and universe intrigues me. They were certainly worth that, and I will add that even though I say straight up they're bad, they're not as bad as their online reputation. It even led me to KJA's Saga of Seven Suns series, which flirts with actual competence, so for that too it was more than worth it.
