I just finished chapter 16 of the sword dad isekai manga and I just have to say barring like 3 pages of bad fanservice this is a Good Isekai. I appreciate that sword dad doesn't really use his knowledge of our world for ~cheating~ or whatever. Except to cook curry for fran. Good sword dad.

Also Amanda absolutely rules. She totally embodies the carefree and shenanigans-motivated nature of a max level mmo character. :v:

Edit: yep, now she's just punking uptight newbies for fun. She owns

There was once a man who was summoned to another world, and saved it. Of course, he became too popular there, and turned into an isekai-normie.
However, that man fell into a "trap", and was forcibly returned to his original world. Moreover, he had to start over as a baby! This is the story of the way-too-fantastic ex-hero who lived as a gloomy high-schooler as he gets summoned once again to that other world in a very unexpected development!

I feel like it's attempting to set up the "bunch of smug shithead idiots in a fantasy world" thing of Konosuba-ish types but badly.

speaking of, I've read the Konosuba author's new series and it's quite good and chock full of shenanigans. The whole "be evil/mischievous = points to spend on summoning anything you want" combined with the right type of shitheads in a group is great.

Also the monsters they first encounter are really interesting designs, honestly. The whole "dog-creature, but when it attacks it folds its legs up as it leaps at you and its ENTIRE BACK opens up into one massive jaw" is some good cosmic horror type poo poo.

it's impressive how bad that is. you don't even have the typical isekai tropes of the hero being this everyman for the audience learning everything that's different about the world while being overpowered. Nope its just some guy checking out what his old harem has been up to while he was gone.

There is an at least mediocre story with a similar setting:
https://www.novelupdates.com/series/im-back-in-the-other-world/

Mighty wizard dies, gets reincarnated on Earth, gets summoned to their original world, becomes famous for introducing modern cooking while ignoring the fact that food culture was mainly defined by trade-routes. Then it turns somewhat repetitive and boring.

Also remember that the best isekai story ever has up to 4 transfers, depending on how you count.

Maiden in white...
You are not one of us.
There's a few more shoujo isekai that I'd been thinking of posting about recently and figured why not now. At least the first two should work as a palate cleanser after that.

+α no Tachiichi: This one's completed, with reasonably short 13 chapters.

quote:

Satoki Houma is an imaginative girl who enjoys shoujo manga. She has long comes to terms with the fact she will never be the type of girl that is the heroine of a manga purely because she isn't pretty, and she has decided she prefers to watch events unfold rather that get involved in any case. However, in the perfect shoujo manga twist, one day she gets dragged to an alternate world where the people have summoned a Holy Maiden to save them!

Except so did her classmate, Haruka Toudou, who fits the exact model of a Shoujo Protagonist. Naturally, Satoki is overlooked for Haruka except it's not Haruka who has the powers of the Holy Maiden they wished for. What will Satoki do!?
It's not as straightforward as that description would lead you to believe.

From Maid to Mother: It should probably go in the romance thread, but it's worth mentioning here once. This one's nice since the main character, Lily, isn't overpowered or possessing of some unique ability. She helped take care of a sickly daughter of the noble her father works for, leading to the noble's daughter marrying the crown prince a while before the story begins. Lily, known as the Royal Maid due to her usefulness, gets roped into becoming a maid for a powerful but reclusive and strange magician that has recently adopted a child. There's some standard isekai stuff, like making tasty food and recognizing the poor living conditions for the sickly girl in the backstory, but unusually there's also some stuff from her previous life that she's dealing with as the story goes on that leads for a nice change of pace in that regard.

The Vengeful White Cat Lounging on the Dragon King's Lap: This one's more of the standard power fantasy isekai fare but there's some cute stuff that makes it a little different if you're looking for that. If you just don't like power fantasy stuff this won't change your mind so skip it. Ruri's childhood neighbor Asahi isn't the best friend. While Ruri's quite the looker (according to the manga, and thankfully she's not 50% boobs), people find Asahi adorable and this constantly causes problems for Ruri. When both Ruri and Asahi (and some faceless others) get summoned to another world, everyone falls for Asahi and Ruri gets exiled, pissing her off. Ruri proves to be quite popular with the fairies, which are the source of this world's magic, and thus has quite strong magic herself while also being able to influence them since they like her. (For example, the fairies stop performing magic for the kingdom that exiled Ruri, though once she realizes this Ruri asks them to not do that.) The setup has been nice and cute so far, though the translations (done by the same group as Bakarina) are only just getting into the predictable potential romance with the Dragon King. I'm hoping it stays cute.

I've started reading the manga for the Devil Is A Part-Timer, and just got to the first chapter past where the anime ended (if you've not seen it, it's definitely one of the better comedy anime of the last decade). I definitely noticed the manga significantly toned down the cheesecake, especially with chiho, who no longer has watermelons strapped to her chest. It focuses way more on the shenanigans and does an appreciable job of doing the same scenes the anime did, though the fight scenes were far, far better in the anime(the scene where maou just gets right up in lucifer's face INSTANTLY, and the charge-up punch were both well worth watching the anime for).

I just started the first non-anime-related chapter and it immediately starts off strong:

Not sure how far the manga goes, iirc the light novels go for quite a while? So I'm not sure if they caught up or what.

So reading a few more chapters past the anime ending of Devil Is A Part-Timer and I can absolutely 100% see why they wrapped up the anime with the fallen angel plotline/piddly side stories, because the introduction of what seems to be a literally heaven-sent toddler who claims to be the child of maou and emi would be stepping into a probably major storyline that they would never have time for without a second season. :v:

she's a cutie though, even if her name is goofy as hell

edit: okay, the more I read, the more I'm sad there was never a second season for the anime. Kinda big spoilers I guess a fragment of the Sefirot incarnated as a toddler and raised by the demon king goes SSJ and tackles Literally Gabriel Yes THAT Gabriel because she doesn't wanna go back home to heaven with him is seriously not where I expected the direction of the series to go even if it had been all about Gods and Demons from the get-go. It handles it in the expectedly goofy way the series has handled everything else so far, with Gabriel being a ripped Sephiroth-looking dude in a "I <3 (something)" t-shirt half-obscured by his angelic robes and wears sandals and talks like a goddamned nonchalant Ned Flanders-type.

Like the whole thing with Lucifer and Olba and all that was a good funny take on the evil church conspirators plotline and all but I feel like they never actually got to the meat of the series. Like this is some serious poo poo going on but it's absolutely hilarious all the same as the anime usually was. A godly toddler pummeling an archangel into the sky and headbutting them, who then retaliates by summoning a sword and being literally all "ta-da!" in context is kinda serious but it's done absolutely ludicrously. I love it.

I'd say very. The author's other works include such wonderful titles as Skill Taker’s World Domination ~ Building a Slave Harem from Scratch which speaks for itself, and I, the Demon Lord, and the Ring of the Ghoul Princess which has this for a description:

quote:

He thinks little of the message until he receives a giant package the following day. He assumes it’s the porn books he ordered, but the huge box ends up containing the unconscious body of a near-naked girl! She’s a ghoul named Zonmi, who intends to fight beside him as his partner.

However, it turns out that other hot girls at his mostly-male high school are also magical entities, and Zonmi may not be the only one who wants to fight by his side!
