when Brown Moses started doing his work there was still the faint glimmer of hope even among Internet leftists that something might be done about Syria and that Assad would be out but now some time on when Syria is still a grim nightmare and Trump is president anything that could be used to make the case for intervention is retroactively very bad

is there a serious use case where a blockchain that's only got a limited number of servers participating would be useful

what would be an actual concrete example of real-life application where you want a decentralized network for records keeping and a blockchain is just the thing

not particularly trying to be an rear end in a top hat here, above my general background level

I'm curious as well, but it really seems like cryptocurrency is its only use. Which, itself, seems to have little real world usefulness to me (other than shady poo poo). Bitcoin seems, to me, to be just another kind of stock market. A way for people to make money doing nothing except using a system complex enough to alienate the majority of people, especially the poor. I also don't know very much about how it works. Does it only deal in number values or can you use it with any data? Like, could it be used to consolidate and modernize the horrendous records backlog at the VA?

any practical application of blockchain could be done in a database much faster and with less energy devoted to idiotic computer makework

I mean isn’t the point of blockchain that you do sacrifice some things in exchange for having the items themselves carry the equivalent of the database around, so that it’s decentralized? it just turns out the people who want a decentralized deregulated currency want that because they want to buy drugs and put child porn into the blockchain data string

the "benefits" of the blockchain is that it's a distributed tamper proof ledger. the idea is that it can be used in "trustless" systems where you dont know or trust the other users.

this sounds interesting at first until you realize that any form of society requires trust in some institution whether its the government, your neighbors, etc. the only people who truly believe blockchain is revolutionary are libertarian sociopaths who want a completely antagonistic and atomized society.

I expect he's thinks that's the funding we get from NED. Also, Bellingcat receives no funding from the Atlantic Council, our funders are NED, Open Society Foundations, Adessium, and PAX for Peace, and about half our income comes from workshops, as recently profiled in The New Yorker.

edit: and yeah if you’re totally not aware of it, brown moses runs bellingcat, which receives funding from the US State Dept, for him to produce Extremely Normal, not-suspect analysis of conflicts the US is involved in

Yet we still do detailed investigations with Human Rights Watch and Forensic Architecture that showed the US bombed a mosque full of civilians in Syria, then claimed it wasn't a mosque:

Which would suggest we're doing a pretty lovely job of protecting US interests.

va records aren't a good use because the point of blockchain is to make tampering detectable but within an institution you just accomplish that with infosec and backups

the closest thing to an ideal use case is supply chain verification for counterfeitable goods, but surprise (no actual surprise) there's nothing preventing someone from taking their mathematical proof that they own an alpha black lotus or sack of fair trade coffee and slapping it on a chinese reprint or bag of dunkin, then selling the real one under the table too
