I'm sure it helps plenty that it's not just a coincidental alignment of interests, but that Russian media operations actively sought out both groups and insinuated their messages into both the radical left and right zeitgeist.

You have the likes of Vanessa Beeley and Eva Bartlett who are lifted out of obscurity by the English speaking Russian media and even the Russian government itself to appear as subject experts, reinforcing the narratives that benefit the Russian position. Unlike Russia started bombing Syria no-one knew who they were, but once Russia needed some voices to attack the White Helmets their obscure writings were featured on Russia Today and being presented to the UNSC by Russia.

On the other side of that you have things like the July 21st 2014 press conference where the Russian MoD presented its MH17 evidence (which turned out to be mainly a series of fakes), and ask various questions about what it could mean, leaving it for the online community and Russian media to find those answers, which it then would later claim was proof the whole thing was Ukraine's fault. They plant the seeds of disinformation, then reap it when its need, feeding the cycle of disinformation.

Is that a real account or a parody? I see the photo of him on Twitter in front of his desk (doesn't looked obviously photoshopped but it would be pretty trivial to do a good job on editing a screen) and "verified" but what does that really mean? All of his tweets are in English and probably > half are about US politics, and none of them make any loving sense for an Iranian ex-president to be talking about not to mention all of his "pro inclusiveness wokeness" messages are massively hypocritical for so many reasons, not least that he was the one who gave the loving order to block Twitter in Iran.

E: Well it's totally legit, https://twitter.com/Ahmadinejad1956/status/849186274024050688 he has a video statement talking directly about his twitter account. Mind blown.

E2: Wow, that was a lot of "fucks" for something that doesn't actually bother me at all. I was mostly laughing out loud while reading his tweets. Too much Boondock Saints for me as a child.

And now US President Donald Trump's account (yes, the guy from The Apprentice) tweeted this:
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1036740691211284480?s=19

quote:

President Bashar al-Assad of Syria must not recklessly attack Idlib Province. The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy. Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don’t let that happen!
There is a 0% chance this was actually written by Trump, it's far too specific, coherent, and to-the-point. But given that Trump has handed off most of his Syria policy to Mattis and various high-ranking military officers, it's probably easiest to read this as a tweet from the people actually in charge of the US's Syria policy.

How the gently caress is anything in this post real, what the gently caress is reality anymore?

Anyway, other news:
https://twitter.com/IraqiSecurity/status/1036363317315624960

quote:

The rift between #Iraq’s PM Abadi and Iran is deepening after Iranian-backed politicians attacked Abadi’s firing of his national security adviser Falih Al-Fayyadh.

PM Abadi: “We won’t risk the interests of our people in order to satisfy Iran or any other country.”
The dispute between Abadi and Iran/Iranian influence is ongoing, along with who actual has a majority coalition in the Iraqi Government:

https://twitter.com/IraqiSecurity/status/1036388361609592832

quote:

To summarise,

PM Abadi, Muqtada & co. say they have about 177 MPs... “the largest bloc”.

Maliki, ‘Amiri & co. say they have about 145 MPs... “the largest bloc”.

How?
They say PM Abadi’s Nasr alliance has split with the “Fayyadh wing” joining them so the 177 MPs claim is false.

https://twitter.com/IraqiSecurity/status/1036389623860260864

quote:

However, there is legal uncertainty over whether or not the “Fayyadh wing” votes belong to Fayyadh or to the leader of the Nasr Alliance, who is PM @HaiderAlAbadi.

Fayyadh was Abadi’s National Security Adviser but was sacked last week because of his lust for the throne.

https://twitter.com/aalmawlawi/status/1036390280407199746

quote:

Another interesting legal debate that has emerged: does the head of an electoral list speak on behalf of all its members or does each lawmaker have autonomy to switch alliances? The answer to this question will ultimately determine the largest parliamentary bloc

Regardless of who ends up becoming the largest parliamentary bloc, the cross-sectarian nature of both alliances is a remarkable turnaround from 2014 #Iraq
Given that 2014 was "Maliki refuses to step down, oh god now ISIS is taking over, everything's falling apart", yeah that's a hell of a turnaround in just 4 years. I'm actually slightly hopeful about Iraq's future, which is something I never really thought would be possible to say.

Bar none the dumbest loving thing any group ever believed about Trump was all the people in late 2016 insisting he was at least more dovish than Neo-Cons and Democrats.

They still linger on in people insisting Bush was a worse president because of Iraq. As if Trump wouldn't do 1000 times worse given the same warmonger blank check Bush received.

On the list of countries who, for the good of mankind, should see their ability to project power and finance international terrorism drastically limited, Iran would be far, far behind Saudi Arabia, and behind the USA too.

And don't even try to pretend that starving the country is good for the Iranian people. That reeks of the same bullshit as "liberating the Iraqi from Saddam Hussein". Nobody's buying that crap.
