The game doesn't certainly require you to do so, but there are very tangible benefits for learning it early.

This, exactly. You don't have to pogo off of hazards specifically early on. There are usually ways around it or the things you can bounce off of are obviously bouncy objects like mushrooms and enemies. I never would have expected to have been able to bounce off of saw blades and spikes because they look like super lethal avoid at all costs objects.

When I just got Dead Cells I was having fun, playing it mostly when playing anything. That is, until I reached The Incomplete One (the first boss). I did end up playing a couple more times and beating it and dying in the next area, but after that I moved on to other things and it'll be some time before I get back to it (if I do).

It's dumb when the best way they have to make a boss challenging is to exhaust your hands attacking the thing.

Xbone. Still slow as poo poo loading though. Reloading after a death is OK but traversing between levels...I could go make waffles.

Thanks to the goons who told me to get good with the shotgun. One shotting mimics feels so good after all the poo poo they put me through since the 9mm is worthless. Hoping there's some sort of scope upgrade eventually that lets me tag areas. A sniper rifle would be nice too.

Speaking of the scope, I'm so used to using R3 to melee in games that I keep switching to scope mode when i'm trying to mash a motherfucker with a wrench, so that's hosed me up a few times.

Heard mixed things about this game but I'm really digging it.

Pretty much every single game leaving early access is way harder than it should be because it's been playtested by overly invested, crazy people. Overload did the same thing. The amount of robots it throws on you on hotshot difficulty (3rd level out of 5) makes it just unfun in the more open levels.

My gripe for the thread: Yakuza 0 feels like it was a Majima spinoff that at some point in development got a Kiryu part attached to it. Majima has better fighting styles (loads of good combos, a great crowd control style, fast as hell in every one), better substories, better main minigame (cabaret, Kiryu only has a literal idler game with nothing to do). His part of the story is also way more interesting.

It must be weird for people who start with 0 to know that the main series protagonist is actually Kiryu.

FTL would have been better without that lovely boss entirely.

Majima gets to fight 7 bosses while Kiryu only gets 3. Majima also gets the more heart-wrenching ending while Kiryu chooses to work with the rear end in a top hat who started this mess because this is a prequel and that's where he was in the first game.

Samus Returns vies with Super as my favorite Metroid, but I don't like that while there's a whopping 150 suit expansions, you only get 10 dinky health upgrades. This game is hard, and having a touch more health instead of missiles would even the challenge without dulling it. Diggernaut shits on Capra Demon.

Diggernaut is a trash boss and basically has every bad boss mechanic shoved into a single fight. Hes all new to the game too, so its not like this is some sort of slavish devotion to the past here.

From what I've read from the Yakuza veterans, you're not very far off and it extends to Kiwami 1 and 2. Majima was just a side character who appeared a couple of times but got really popular for some reason so they added more stuff for him on the sequels, made him a big part of 0 and retroactively inserted more scenes and participations with him in the remakes based on the prequel.

Its better to add screentime and depth to a popular side-character than say, retroactively add a new character who the director thinks is cool like that red-haired douche from the one FFVII spinoff people don't hate.

majima was only a side character in the very first game, he was a smash hit right out the gate and had a way bigger role from 2 onwards

appropriately it's only in the first Kiwami where his added presence feels forced

as for why he was really popular, he was a larger-than-life antagonist with a bizarre code of honor (which japanese audiences seem to eat up) and was voiced in the american release by mark hammill doing his best discount Joker

I really like how multiple weapons/powers have numerous applications. Even stuff like the nerf crossbow being useful for distracting enemies, popping cystoids, and activating buttons. Recycler charge can get you resources, be used as damage or used to destroy radioactive canisters or open up new pathways.

I found when I played it the first time I kind of had to get my head out of the box, so to speak. I wasn’t really used to games giving you that much freedom in how you deal with obstacles. Like I pretty much only used Lift to hold Typhon in place while I eradicated them with the Q-Beam. Then I was like “hang on... lift... myself?” and then just doing mad jumps.

It's also telling that I've seen posts from people saying that <weapon> is the best one and you should focus on it, and it's been a different weapon each time. Even the silenced pistol.

From what I can glean, the only overtly bad choice is dumping too many points into turret stuff because they eventually stop being particularly useful for multiple reasons.

I think doing too many alien mods just makes turrets turn on you. Normal human abilities like bullet time and expanded inventory should be fine though.

Yardbomb posted:

I already love Nioh in general, but this is one of the big things that REALLY do it for me too, the enemies in Nioh don't get to just infinitely swing on you like a Souls enemy can, both you and every enemy in the game including bosses has a stamina or stagger bar which is always shown to you, so when the human-y bosses in Nioh throw out their big bang ultra attacks, they're doing so at a detriment if it misses much like yourself, they can't just attack forever so you can actually have a back and forth.

I was thinking of NiOh regarding the stamina bars, I think the DS enemies have stamina, but sometimes I'm not sure.

Also, I'd forgotten one more thing - but for a few deliberate (and hardly helphul) instances enemies have no friendly fire. That means that they can fire through each other, swing through each other and you won't see it coming, nor will they be hindered by fighting in close quarters in large groups. Worse still, enemies that are in their dying animation can't be pushed through until they actually die, so you can have someone swinging from behind his buddy's corpse and not be able to escape, since the corpse blocks your way. Fun. And I don't think (although I didn't check very carefully) that enemies are bothered by walls and other objects while swinging their weapons, and certainly those large enemies in the Undead Village aren't.

It suffers from that same hardcore crowd power/difficulty creep, and as I understand it the expansions get progressively worse.

I would either just get core Rebirth, or if you're after the experience and you're not too invested in playing it to death, get the original edition and the Wrath of the Lamb DLC, but don't turn the DLC on until you're comfortably winning normal games (i.e. 10 or so wins under your belt).

Edit: I never actually answered the question – it's got some dated humour but the core gameplay is solid, and as a twinstick playing on m+kb, I actually enjoyed it a lot more than Gungeon.

The aesthetic is raw garbage and I don't think any of the expansions really change the gameplay, so if you didn't like it the first time I don't think there's any reason you'd like it now. I put about ten hours into the base game and Rebirth, it doesn't do much for me despite being generally in my wheelhouse. If it's the dumb presentation turning you off it's probably worth trying to push past it, but there's plenty of other games so

That's a pretty big deal since the bosses can't be avoided. As you can't switch out equipment between stages, you are kinda forced into using loadouts that are effective against bosses all the time (i.e. two turret skills indefinitely). There are so many skills and mutations that are basically if not literally useless against the bosses, and that's enough to make them not worth using even if they work well against regular enemies.

I think most of the fans are stuck there through inertia; it's nearly impenetrable for a new person to just walk into Afterbirth+ because there is an insane amount of (largely redundant) content and the game famously doesn't explain anything. There are so many better roguelites to play that I wouldn't bother.

I'm really bummed out about roguelites being like this, because I've tried several now (boi, rogue legacy, gungeon, tower of guns, nuclear throne, necrodancer) and I get hosed immediatelly.

It's not that I'm bad at these kinda games, it's that they all require me to put the time in and learn their byzantine poo poo, while I get nothing out of it for the first 5 - 10 hours.

I just don't have the patience or time to do that, and these games would be best described as casual in everything but the difficulty.

Dark Souls games are very rewarding because there's the world and everything you want to explore, so you have a reason to push on. A standard roguelite has some new sprites in level 2 - 1.
