Crane topples over, splitting Baldwin Park home in half

quote:

Executives at Beyel Brothers Crane and Rigging and Gold Key Roofing declined to comment on the exact cause of this mishap.

WESH 2 Investigates reviewed records with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and discovered that this is not the first incident involving Beyel Brothers Crane and Rigging.

Department of Labor enforcement records reveal a company employee fatality in Merritt Island in 2013.

In that incident, Shaun Cheney fell from from a crane barge while it was attached to a tug. Court records show that his family sued Beyel Brothers for negligence and the case was later settled.

Beyel was not fined or cited by the government in that incident.

A check of Gold Key Roofing's license status with the state shows it to be active and in good standing and with no complaints.

Federal safety records show Gold Key has had two serious safety violations, resulting in more than $6,037 in fines, since 2014.

I know there's an Orlando goon that trains crane operators, but do you deal with cranes this (relatively) small? Do cranes this size need special training?

Thanks, I didn't know what it was called so I was having trouble confirming it.

I wasn't sure it was real because it seemed like such overkill to use one to move cars parked in fire lanes, etc. and those thrown together Euro simulator games don't seem to care about making sense.

Some of them, yes. Sometimes, the bike is pulling small wheelies or jumping and moving around as it lands because they are racing on public roads that are not smooth like a race track.

Edit: Fatal accidents are not the reason I love the race, I love it in spite of the accidents. I had to come to terms with the inevitability of fatalities when I started watching MotoGP, but Isle of Man is an order of magnitude more insane. I mean, I get it -- I watch the documentaries and take former racers out for beers to tell me about what it's like -- but holy poo poo if that course doesn't kill at least 2 riders every time they run the races.

"Road" is a great documentary about one of the families that has been involved with the race for multiple generations and how they have dealt with the deaths. It was on Netflix last I checked.

Reminds me of that footage with the electric car going around the Nurbergring. The acceleration is a straight line, not a curve, and it just feels off after a lifetime of watching gasoline-powered vehicles.

Amputate. Full stop. There is no amount of surgical intervention that could fix that extensive of an injury.

It was probably a work injury, so the x-ray would more than likely just be for documentation/insurance purposes.

They actually came and interviewed the CEO yesterday about it!

That’s very far from a “small” crane. Just eyeballing it, it’s probably got a capacity of 40-50 tons. Every type of crane requires training and we work to discourage the notion that any crane is “so simple” that it doesn’t require any training.

It’s an especially big problem with overhead cranes and small industrial cranes in warehouses with a 2 ton capacity. Totally untrained people get put on them to learn on the job and that’s how you kill employees.

Load charts are a complicated thing. I’m guessing the operator lowered the boom too close to horizontal at too long a length for that weight, unbalancing the crane.
