Anyway, that’s some general advice for spess mahrin in ZM. I’ll do an Auxilia version later this week.

Thanks for this, it's pretty helpful as a complete beginner. I assume people just convert regular marine models into the more generic HQs?

Most of us buy Chinese versions of the proper FW model, or do the same with another, and convert it.

Both of the Calth HQs are pretty flexible and can be converted to all sorts of stuff, or using Calth plastic to make a 40k HQ choice look more mkIII or mkIV is very possible as well.

Converting HQ choices is super fun IMO, even the less generic ones.Bulbasaur has some really great stuff.

Yeah, 30k is even more theme driven than 40k, so spend some time planning out what you want your dudes to look like. You don't need to write an essay, but you should definitely come up with a concept of who your dudes are and why they are doing what they are doing. It helps with the painting and converting.

For example my IWs are an expeditionary fleet that fell to malal. TKWG's army are a bunch of excommunicated dark angels who studied the blade with neophytes a little to literally. Stanyer's space wolves come from a detachment of Russ's warriors so special that the emperor issued them padded leather helmets and wooden shields. Panascope's SoH are actually his 40k ultramarines that got lost in the warp and emerged in the past after 100,000 years of WAACing against the chaos gods. Keith's Night Lords are well painted, but never win.

As you can see the background really helps with the immersion.

TACTICA: AUXILIA ZM

Might as well spend the holiday writing a primer on how to play Solar Auxilia in Zone Mortalis. A couple of the internet communities I frequent have been down on the Aux’s ZM proficiency and I frankly find that opinion somewhat boggling- the army certainly plays differently than marines or Mechanicum in ZM, but I think they’re squarely one of the best armies in the format. The two big things that really help them out both tie into their points efficiency- they have a large number of beneficial special rules, including ZM specific ones like everything having void armor, and they generally get to take more bodies than you’d expect when they stick to an all infantry force.

HQ
You really only have two real HQ options in ZM- the command squad, which is ridiculously good as a force multiplier for 85 points, or a Lord Marshal, which is good for both choosing a warlord trait (master of ambush in particular) and unlocking a unit of household guard. I’d almost always go command squad though- the laser shot alone is potentially devastating and making castellax and servo automata 16% more accurate is a big game.

That being said, a lord marshal with some axe household guard can go toe to toe against a praetor in a terminator squad, so it might be worth the points sink, idk.

Elites
Good units: motherfucking enginseer auxilia, household guard, medicae, ogryn charonites, rapiers.

Pretty much everything in this slot in the army list is great in ZM, but I’d almost say that enginseer auxilia are mandatory. 8 servitors and 2 enginseers with grenade launchers and a pair of graviton guns represent 10 haywire shots, which easily mulches dreadnoughts in a single round of shooting. They can also throw 10 shred templates against anything with a 3+ or better save, or use the krak shots against things like mechanicum weirdos. On top of the offensive firepower, they’re also your source of cortex controllers which unlocks your only real heavy support choice. Their only real weakness is their durability, so if I ever take them against you please don’t focus on them, tia.

Ogryn are the other elites choice really worth bringing up, mostly because them and axe veletaris are the two main ways to threaten terminator armored things- their special murderous-strike-esque rule is a great way to punish characters, and they can generally stand toe-to-toe against a similarly sized number of terminators and tank powerfist hits with T5 and FNP. Its really beneficial for them to get the charge though, so they’re best used as a second wave behind the lasrifles.

Finally, household guard is the reward for taking a lord marshal, and PE: infantry is excellent with both volkite and axes.

Troops
The tercio configurations that make sense for ZM are either taking a lasrifle section to unlock flamers, or taking lots of veletaris and being tacticool high-speed low drag operators. I lean towards only taking two units in a single tercio, but doing something like a lasrifle section, a flamer section, and an axe veletaris section could be pretty good.

Veletaris and flamers have obvious upside in ZM, but lasrifles are also quite good. Getting to split into two squads is a big advantage, and screening your killy but fragile units with cheap laser bois in the first wave is really valuable. Taking blast chargers is also potentially interesting, since they can glance a boxdread to death.

Fast Attack
Nothing to see here, move along.

Technically you can take tarantulas here as an anti-armor option, but I’m skeptical that they’re points well spent.

Heavy Support
Castellax are your main option here, but it could be kinda fun to try taking a swarm of Cyclopses and IEDing marines to death.

As far as castellax configuring goes, I like darkfire as a way to scrape HP off contemptors and ID terminators, and flamers are always useful. None of the CC options are really absolutely necessary, but are both decent if you have spare points. A pair of castellax is really all you need I think- it’s a nice dreadnought analogue for spearheading your army, and ought to soak up enough firepower to let your specialist squads line up to do work.

Wat Do
The big trick to playing the army is maintaining effective screening and properly maneuvering your counters to the enemies stuff- enginseer auxilia are your dread hunters, axes/ogryn are your elite infantry hunters, volkite/flamers kill regular infantry, and lasrifle sections die honorably for the motherland. Picking your battles and making sure your chaff and tough stuff is available to absorb your opponents punches is the order of the day. You’ll usually outnumber marines around 2:1, and their average army component definitely isn’t twice as good as your average dude. A 10 man lasrifle section is worse than 10 marines, but they can certainly fight reasonably well against them for a couple turns, and when you get the opportunity to use your heavy firepower to utterly baleet the really scary stuff like expensive HQs, elite infantry and stompy robits the opponents options to effectively respond to you start dwindling pretty quickly.

I’m still learning the army and I’m notoriously stupid, but I’ve really enjoyed how things have played thus far and have a pretty good number of lists I want to experiment with in the future.

Hey, here's a question for y'all. Has there ever been an illo of a Mark III Raven Guard in the style of classic Herey "Forward view, plus gun, plus bio of this marine at the time this pict-cast was captured" armor color workup illos? Book III: Extermination has helmets and shoulders, a Mark II (in Pale Nomads grey), a Mark IV (assault and recon variants), and a Mark VI, as well as a Terminator, a Contemptor, and some vehicles, but I'm trying to figure out what to do with the leg plate trim and rivets on a Mark III tactical marine with a heavy bolter, and I feel like I'm trapped between "Black looks too plain" and "Silver looks too Iron Hands." I feel like being able to see a solution worked out by a professional visual designer might help.

(Not strictly a 30k question; I'm just doing up my Fifth Company in Heresy-era colors and heraldry to contrast with my Fourth Company Primaris.)

Bois, here's what I'm working on right now:

I'm mostly cleaning up the jetbikes and converting my praetor. Wondering if there's anything I should consider post-FAQ before I commit to giving FW the finger assembling and painting.

I kind of want to see more infantry in general, because infantry owns. And auspexes seem to own hard now. Maybe a heavy support squad, since Cho-go-go makes them Outflank.

Just to be clear, these are the relevants bits of Legiones Astartes: WS + RoW: Chogorian Brotherhood:

+1 to first reserve roll every turn
Outriders and sky hunters troops
All Infantry have Outflank

That's why the vets are skipping the outflank specialty & why I'd love to stick some extra support or heavy support squad in.
