im posting from about 400 posts behind but the only 2020 presidential candidates of any consequence are still going to be bernie, biden, and avenatti biden will probably lose start out with a polling lead because biden = obama but will whither when many many women say that no him getting all handsy with them on camera on the senate floor was not welcome. and harris and gillibrand and likely avenatti will not pull their punches. bernie 2020 will probably be as big a rockstar tour as 2016 was but starting from actual name recognition avenatti is already campaigning and the big question is how much he can get his name into the conversation and into the mainstream by early-mid 2019. he is the only one who could credibly outflank bernie because the median dem voter is pissed off as hell and only bernie and avenatti are channeling that (gillibrand may try but she's pulling her punches too much). avenatti is doing it moreso rn but bernie was mad as hell during the 2016 primary so he can get there again. thinking that avenatti has no chance is extremely pre-escalator thinking in sum i think if avenatti runs (he will) he closes off the avenues for basically everyone except bernie or biden Shear Modulus fucked around with this message at 09:07 on Sep 7, 2018 |

As a socialist socialist the only hope I have for a Sanders administration is rolling back the worst executive things Trump has done. I have zero faith he will end imperialist wars, cut back defense spending, get medicare for all through, etc. etc. Just putting it out there first so I don't sound like some fanboy when I say that I will be absolutely shocked if Bernie doesn't sweep the primary with the greatest of ease. What's left of democratic supporters that still buy into neoliberal horseshit (an ideology with no constituency outside of a few million bourgeoisie) will be divided 30 ways, and for everyone else are at least slightly discredited by association and support for the Hillary disaster. Bernie is the only one left that has a shred of credibility and a built in following and infrastructure ready to hit the ground running. I do hope he wins.

bernie's probably going to win unless harris or booker discover some heretofore unidentified wellspring of charisma or biden discovers one of not groping his colleague's daughters

it would be cool for bernie to win but that's gonna be step one of about 500,000 to get some kind of socialist democracy in this country, there's a huge swath of right-wing resistance to pretty much everything after health insurance. it's going to be a long time before we use all these loving troops to rebuild the countries we've destroyed and help the world instead of just being a tool to keep the war industry moving

Biden and Bernie’s age is a huge strike against them, even in the eyes of the most hardened leftist. We already got captain sundown in the White House slurring his speech and talking nonsense. Even if Bernie is sharp as a whip today, it’s gonna be tough to maintain that at 80+ years old as president.

yeah realistically the best thing the bern dog could do is just pack the cabinet and west wing with as many socialists he couldn't endorse into election and do a kind of president-by-committee kind of thing.

something we can learn from the Trump administration (if you didn't know it already) is that even without Congress, the Executive has a ton of power concentrated upon itself that can directly impact the lives of millions of people, only this time, hopefully for the better and this includes packing the various Federal agencies with people who aren't poo poo-for-brained, massively corrupt, fanatical evangelicals, literal CHUDs, etc it's possible that a Bernie presidency might motivate Congress to start reclaiming powers from the imperial presidency, particularly with all the succdems crossing the aisle, but for anyone who still has hope, that's what's going to be counteracted by getting progressives into Congress

comedyblissoption posted:the entire political winds can change very rapidly in american politics. just look at FDR. basically people have to mass organize in a scenario if bernie wins the general which might happen in a situation that the economy shits the bed before the 2020 general. Yeah, it seemed like with the 2008 crash, barring Occupy, most people had a deer-in-the-headlights reaction for a couple years. The anti-corporate and anti-bank sentiment seems strong enough now that if we get another crash America might not sleepwalk through the immediate aftermath. But we could just as easily direct all that hate towards government and double down on some Tea Party poo poo. Also I really don't think Bernie's age is a detriment at this point. Dude is still popular as hell and hasn't showed any signs of slowing down. 2024 might be a different story but even then I'm not so sure. Even if he couldn't get lots of his initiatives passed he would probably have an executive order blowout to ram progressive improvements through in the short term.
