You might have missed it, because few people bother to pay attention to Indiana, but he'd been becoming steadily more unpopular with the Republicans in general in that state for being ineffective and uncharismatic. If he hadn't been put on the Trump ticket and instead stayed there, many people expected he'd lose the Republican primary and thus not get reelected. He'd basically have become the sort of losing politician that it's safe for everyone on a place like freep to decry as a failure RINO who's betraying Are Conservative Principles.
