uiru posted:Now I'm wondering if I should've played FFXIV. I mostly avoid MMOs these days, but DQXI is making me wish I could try DQX. Is FFXIV fun? Is it mechanically different from WoW? The core structure of FFXIV is similar to WoW, but it has significant mechanical differences (both in the pace of combat and in how dungeons and boss encounters are designed) that make it a very different game in practice. It still has the "target enemy and use skills from a hotbar" combat that WoW does, but with notably different class design and encounter design so it doesn't actually feel the same to play. It is also much, much more story-driven than WoW and does a much better job of making you feel like you're actually playing a significant character in the story. It's one of the few MMOs that I feel like can pull off setpieces well. The final boss of the Stormblood expansion actually felt like a legitimate Final Fantasy end boss, it's really impressive. The supporting characters and villains are generally pretty compelling, too. Oh, and the soundtrack kicks rear end. That said, fair warning: the game expects you to play its story in order, and the level 1-50 story (the base A Realm Reborn story) followed by the post-2.0 quests that lead up to the Heavensward expansion are very long and very slow-paced. It's a common criticism of the game and one that I think is very fair. Even if you pay for a level boost up to 60, you'll still have to play through the story quests in order unless you also pay for a story skip, which would unfortunately skip you right past Heavensward, which is so far the highlight of the game's storytelling so you really wouldn't want to skip it. That said, I should note that I introduced the game to a friend who really isn't super into MMOs last year and she loved it all the way from level 1, so not everyone feels quite so bogged down by the 1-50 story. (She did very nearly lose patience with the goddamn interminable pre-Heavensward quests, though, so fair warning there.)

For anyone at the very end of the post-game, I noticed a potential mistranslation while watching a stream that might muck things up. You are supposed to use the sword of light (as in USE as an item) that you forge from a recipe reward for beating any of the trails in order to dispel the final final bosses' cloak, not simply use as in attack with it.

I need Colourful Cocoons for recipes, but nothing seems to drop it commonly and I can't find a resource node for it? The item description says it's found in Insula Centralis but...it isn't? Is this a post-game (which really should just be Act 3) thing?

Kild posted:just use erik's auto crit skill. I wish I liked this skill more, but it doesn't seem to take into account dual wield (or Falcon Blades, but that's sadly par for the course), so it doesn't do that much more damage barring stuff like metal slimes. I wish more of his skills actually comboed with his stuff, but since they don't, Erik has been condemned to just using Attack and Divide against a boss, which puts him in a weird spot since Dual Wield Falcon Blades is the best standard Attack in the game, supplemented by Erik's INSANE attack bonuses for Swords (+85 I think?), but it then just obsoletes all of his actual attack skills, including Auto Crit. Which means round to round, I think Jade does more damage with Hardclaw (3x damage) or whatever that 7x attack is (total 3.5x damage), although she doesn't heal from that, which is surprisingly handy during boss fights! I'm also not sure if the 7x attack benefits from Crit Rate bonuses from Claw like Hardclaw does, where it's super satisfying to do a triple crit. ate poo poo on live tv posted:Why is metal slash so bad? So while it's nice to have a consistent 1-2 points of damage, it's still more reliable to use a crit ability like Thunder Thrust or whatever Erik's is called.

Thanks for the heads up, Metal Slash was going to be next skill, but I got two slimes by accident in Gallopolis so I'll probably pass. What are people enjoying with Sylvando? I've had him with whips to keep him different and it seems fine on paper at least, need to start working on his unique tree. Sylvando owns as a character though, it can't be said enough. I usually organize my jrpg parties by who I think is cool rather than usefulness so uhhhh sorry Serena

Can someone tell me where the (item spoiler) Bad Axe was? I'm really hoping it wasn't in the final dungeon, but I thought I scoured that pretty completely...My last guess is that it was one of the Angri-La prizes, but I don't have access to it at the moment, and it's the one evolution item that I can't account for but I would like to use in the future. I'm also kinda impressed (Post-game spoilers) that they managed to preserve the game/world state for this, as if it just reloaded a save or something.

Sylvando’s weird because he has sky-high strength but is best used as support. I used whips, which he can use pretty effectively but I’m thinking of respecing him to his two personal skill sets and giving him a shield and whatever sword/dagger gives the biggest charm boost. Hustle Dance should not be obtainable that early, what a madman.
