Not recently, but with a 20 candidate shitshow brewing, it's likely the 2020 convention will need more than one ballot.

15 will have dropped out by iowa and something like a third of pledged delegates are up for grabs on super tuesday, and a majority will be awarded by the end march. the primary schedule is super frontloaded

This is of course another way to tilt the contest in favor of established candidates because 90% of primary success is name recognition

Well, it does now that Bern's got some shine. 2016 was kinda discouraging in that regard though, esp by the time the WA state convention rolled around

This time around, sure. In 2016 people doing early-voting on Super Tuesday didn't know who or what a Bernie Sanders was

In a speech Friday that was noteworthy primarily for its unvarnished criticism of President Trump, Obama made a passing reference to issues that could be winners for Democratic candidates.

“Democrats aren't just running on good old ideas like a higher minimum wage, they're running on good new ideas like Medicare for all, giving workers seats on corporate boards, reversing the most egregious corporate tax cuts to make sure college students graduate debt-free,” he said.

the switch was rooted in racism but republican ascendary came in the 70s when the economic crisis hit and the responses were thus:

republicans: we'll give you more money by lowering your taxes
libs: ... pass?

I did a long effort post in the demlols thread in gbs as to why I think it's for sure happening, and it breaks down like this:

1. She's continuing to travel the world giving speeches about how she'd be better than trump
2. She's continuing to raise money
3. There's a lot of support for her. LIke, a frightening amount.
4. There isn't a week that has passed since the election that she isn't featured in multiple news articles/shows.

I honestly can't think of any other failed presidential candidate that didn't just slink off into the dark and disappear for a while.

Grondoth posted:

Don't. Seriously. Trump is doing the same poo poo obama did, it's just that everyone's paying attention to it now because he's trump. That's actually a pretty good thing.

There were certainly a lot of people primed to accept the message after years of fox news and talk radio, but the money was really important.

Money matters less in a presidential race because the cathars get so much free exposure. When you're trying to win every state legislative, county commissioner, school board, and dogcatcher seat the the country, though, that money buys name recognition and name recognition gets wins. Money can also help with the orginazation side (though it's certainly possible to blow tons of cash on a poo poo operation).

I dunno, the Tea Party movement was this odd mix of astroturfed Koch bullshit and authentic racist, reactionary zeal. I don't know if the good guys can recreate that. Our thing is bottom-up organizing, which is hard to do and susceptible to capture (or outright destruction) by elites.
