I found this particular bit of info in that Dev Diary of interest, "The other really exciting part of this new structure is that Flashpoints are all data-driven. They’re built in human-readable JSON in the exposed and easy-to-access asset directory. That means it would be pretty simple for someone to use the structure to create their own Flashpoints. Or even a longer campaign. Which we don’t officially support, of course! But… just saying."

So, if you're pretty comfortable with editing their JSONs at this point (it's stupid easy) you can whip up your own mini-campaigns.

As soon as we get Annihilators my custom campaign will be "You are an Annihilator, kill everything."

Ejecting destroys the mech's head which costs time and money to fix, and loses any equipment that might have been mounted there. If you had a +3hp cockpit mod you might not want to lose it so easily

i was playing dz company commander and had a +3 ballistic accuracy TTS that i lost when one of my pilots ejected from taking a little back damage. having +3 accuracy on an AC/20 thunderbolt was too good to be true i guess so the game only let me have it for one mission before taking it away

Someone familiar with the ins and outs of RogueTech mind providing some insight on how the Engines/Reactors work? That’s probably the biggest divergence from the main game’s mechanics and I’ll readily admit I’ve never played tabletop.

Been chipping away at RogueTech though and thanks to the butcher reccomendstions here I’ve had quite a bit of fun. Lance is currently Butcher/flamer Wolfhound/Royal Griffin PPCs/Catapult LRMboat with Artemis IV installed, and it seems to all work together fairly well.

Fusion cores determine engine weight + speed of your mech. The actual engine spot is where you put engine upgrades or side grades. It's always assumed that you have the basic equipment to field a mech with exception to fusion cores. You must equip one.

Yeah that much I’ve puzzled out just by playing. I’m mostly curious what the calculation is for determining what size core you’ll want to make a mech of a given weight move faster, and if there’s any way to do that math at a glance.

As of right now I’ve just got cores with big numbers after the name in my larger mechs, and cores with smaller numbers in the smaller ones, and I can only imagine how terribly suboptimal my loadout is.

When you hover over the movement section in the top left of the mech bay it tells you how far you'll move for walk / sprint speed. Your movement also determines how many jump jets you can have. The hard and fast rule is: Tonnage * Movement spaces = optimal engine size. So 55 tonner wants a 220 core for 4 spaces and 275 for 5. Anything in between there would be a waste of tonnage, like say a 245 core

On this subject for a while I had a 220 core in a Panther because it was all that I had. I kept forgetting it had that and would surprise me how far it could go

Mech tonnage x movement factor = class of engine to make it move at that pace. Class 300 engines are super useful as they represent the most efficient standard core for a mech moving at 3 (100 tonner), 4 (75 tonner), 5 (60 tonner) and 6 (50 tonner).

One thing that balances it is the fact that you often have sub optimal engines for a mech, and you can't even use an engine that wouldn't get the mech to go 1 hex a turn.

About the Nautilus cache, yeah, fundamentally their only hope was to keep it secret that they had it long enough to get all the stuff out of there. If word had slipped out they had it, it would have become very, very dangerous to have because every force in the region with enough power to come for it would have come for it. And I doubt any of the main story characters knew this but ComStar probably would have killed them all and blown it up anyways, and it is impossible to send news of their acquisition without ComStar finding out given that they run all interstellar communications (apart from the Black Boxes).

No, a Black Box is like a encrypted transmitter. I believe it transmits in a way that makes it hard to pin down, but they are alot slower and can't send as much info than normal HPG communication. We're talking packet sizes in the kilobyte range. The most advanced version ever was able to send like 50 pages of text lol.

No a Black Box is basically an interstellar fax machine that was a Star League attempt to create FTL communications but were found to be far inferior to HPGs, so were shelved. Hanse Davion got his hands in some, probably from his future mother in law, which allowed him to mitigate the worst of the ComStar interdiction in the 4SW.

You can totally use physical couriers but the reality is very few people know how evil ComStar is and thus would be unlikely to NOT send what they think is a secure message.

So does ComStar just refuse to transmit encrypted messages? Because the whole ComStar knows everyone's secrets thing is only possible if they're obviously forcing everyone to send messages in clear, in which case everyone should drat well know that ConStar knows.

Like if the HPG acolytes are all chanting "god's holy machine must only be spoken to with true words" then maybe you put up with it in order to send a message in less than three months. But you aren't surprised when a mysterious legion of pristine battlemechs shows up to steal the SLDF cache you discovered. ComStar has been quietly killing everyone who knows what 'encryption' is for the past 300 years. You pay ComStar to encrypt it and they promise "not to look at it." They've also sold people on the idea of the Verigraph which can theoretically only be viewed by the intended recipient but which ComStar has a way to crack without any effort. Since communication in-universe isn't in real time and even first circuit HPGs don't transmit constantly, a delay of a week or more can go completely unnoticed.

Every message routes through Terra.

Oddly enough, basic cyphers are the best way to get information past ComStar. They can crack anything electronic with Terra's supercomputers but if "Aunt Mabel" is code for the Isis Marik they have a harder time of it.

Maybe this is stupid, but are there any plans to let players seize one of the unclaimed systems, or maybe conquer your own little kingdom , Mount and Blade style?

I mostly want a place to store my mech collection, instead of having to scrap them to cover upkeep , but I could see it being a way to keep the end game going, and maybe get more income to cover the insane upkeep , and maybe even upgrade the planetary infrastructure the same way you do with villages in Mount and Blade.

I guess what I'm saying is, Mount and Blade was really good.

After ComStar's schism, the people who kept the ComStar name were the secular "let's actually just be the Space Telephone Company, but for real this time" folks. But the majority of ComStar, the traditionalists and fundamentalists who used to run ComStar for centuries, were forced out and started calling themselves the Word of Blake.

how can you write those posts and not say Mech and Blade? for shame!

I doubt this particular game could be modded or hacked into doing M&B style conquest -- it's probably possible to do some mod where you could "own" a planet, but without the dynamic missions and politics of M&B I don't see the point. Don't get me wrong I love the idea of it, but it's a different game.

If you want better mech storage just mod the "MechReadyTime" in SimGameConstants to a more reasonable number (like .5) so that swapping mechs into and out of cold storage isn't such a PITA. Needing to do a full refit is penalty enough without an extra week of wait.
