This is true, but (using the democratic governor's primary race total votes cast, which is maybe imperfect) turnout just about tripled from 2014 to 2018 (important because they're midterm years). I'm optimistic going into November.

Anyway, my point is, vote Hawkins. Green Wave 2018.

i imagine that there will be a few seats flipped in the general and that long island will be a big battleground for control of the senate. within NYC, marty golden's seat is going to get a lot of attention- dems outnumber republicans in the district by 2-to-1 and i imagine there will be a lot of volunteers within and outside of brooklyn to take advantage of it

I feel like team D really needs a 3 seat margin, otherwise you basically have Savino in de facto control of the senate. It’s gonna be close.

i still think it'll happen, maybe even on Long Island alone. don't forget, Christine Pellegrino won an assembly seat in a district that went heavily for Trump (albeit in a special election), Hempstead elected its first Dem town supervisor since the '30s, and the Nassau executive race went pretty decisively for Laura Currant. i can't speak for upstate, but luckily, i have a friend who is quite knowledgeable about the senate challengers up there

what gives me pause in SD-22 is that dem turnout was absurdly low compared to other districts with a competitive primary. Gounardes ended up winning with fewer than 10,000 votes. maybe anti-incumbency outrage took the day, because last year's Dem primary election in NYC council district 43 (the heart of Golden's district) had a higher percentage of votes than places with a primary that had an incumbent involved

that upstate expert friend of mine invited me to check out Amanda Kirchgessner. she won her primary up around the Finger Lakes and will be challenging Tom O'Mara. her campaign logo looks like a sign for a diner, but she seems pretty drat good- she supports NYHA, ending cash bail, legalizing weed, and a state-level job guarantee. i'd be down to make some calls for her

edit: i'm really getting into the primary turnout numbers, and i just found a big red flag about SD-22. 21.8% of registered democrats voted there, compared to 27.7% in SD-58 (O'Mara's district). i imagine that neither dem bothered to venture too far outside of Bay Ridge, especially not into the far-flung parts of the district like Marine Park. i gotta think that Golden's gonna survive yet again

for context into the two candidates, Frontus is based in Coney Island and has a lot of support from the black community, while Lustig-Elgrably is a dirty carpetbagger from Midwood who only moved to Bay Ridge because he was chief of staff to councilman Mark Treyger, who wants to ensure the assembly seat stays in loyal hands (Pam Harris was one of his major allies)

the Brooklyn Dems meeting isn't much better. it's on the 27th in the auditorium of Kingsborough Community College, which lacks subway access (though the bus ride from the Brighton Beach stop isn't too bad). it's also at 6pm, conveniently timed so that people are commuting from work when it starts. NKD and several other progressive Democrat groups have made a coalition to put their own slate of people in the executive board, and they've sent out their own proxy card to counteract the inconvenience of the time and place of the meeting. for some reason, Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats withdrew from the coalition. i'm sure we'll learn more about why as the meeting gets closer

i hate to say it, but we should probably get rid of the fusion voting system that allows this. it's outlived its usefulness in the wake of so many progressive Democrat and other lefty groups showing their worth in NY and elsewhere. it made sense 30 years ago but it's counterproductive now

So where do you have it that nobody's going to have to drive/fly in? You could have it in NYC, but that's even more inconvenient for people from Buffalo and Syracuse than Albany is.

You could have it on a Saturday in downtown Albany. You know, where the Greyhound station is and all the public transport from the Capital Region coalesces. Heck, it's not that long a ride from the train station, although we still don't have the monorailgondola.

Edit: Not sure if any of you have been following this mayoral spousal abuse story, but Cohoes mayor Shawn M. Morse's wife did, in fact, call 911 about domestic violence last November, despite his contentions otherwise and the texts he forced her to write denying it after the fact. Cuomo is now calling on him to resign.
