These three posts encapsulate the problem with American politics.

Apparently in this hosed up perspective one single person was responsible for protecting the institutions of American democracy via casting some sort of charm spell akin to the pied piper on millions of Americans to save everyone from their own lesser selves.

No candidate deserves anyone's vote specifically, but everyone is sure as gently caress obligated to show up and vote for the best candidate on the ballot, even if that is a "least bad" scenario. That is how a representative republic works. Acting like politicians need to earn turnout enables a dysfunctional system where gerrymandering and voter disenfranchisement are valid strategies. Worse yet, it puts charisma and PR skills higher on the priority list than actually knowing how to govern.

And this is where Sanders fails. He's a loving moron. His political career is one of grandstanding with nothing to show for it. From most recently naming a bill after a multi-billionaire personally to get those Millennial likes to claiming that tax on stock market transactions was the solution to universal post-secondary education to the delusional belief that simply putting everyone in Medicare and taking out of everyone's paychecks would result in employers turning all that private medical expense money back to their employees.

He continually purity tests the party that votes him into office and plays semantics with whether he's an independent or a democrat, entirely at his convenience. He's tone deaf as gently caress on racial equality issues and instead tries to make everything about economics like the "99%" thing actually went somewhere. He lacks any ability to compromise on anything and his entire political career is built on being a contrarian who rolls the "I told you so!" footage the second he thinks he might be proven right but runs and hides form every taking his L's.

In short He's your classic baby boomer who got to grow up in a world where being a white male ensured that you would generally failed upward, which he did, and now people want to continue enabling that because he somewhat placates their absurd notions that just labeling the half-baked policies of the moment as "Democratic Socialism" is the answer despite Sanders himself treating that as an ephemeral, ever changing label that reforms based on which way the political wins are blowing.

Hillary Clinton embodies what has been wrong with the American political system for several decades - nepotism, cronyism, and corporate enabling to gain political power. But at least her policies are generally competent.

Sanders meanwhile represents one of the the major cracks in society at large: an ivory tower elitist who doesn't actually know poo poo about what he's talking about but makes a growing segment of the policy-illiterate masses feel like the problem isn't them, it's everyone else. If the road to hell is paved with good intentions the ride there is fueled by ego and Sanders has a lifetime supply ready to go.
