I feel like it's too low at the front so the arches morphing into the body look a little weird. If it was raised ever so slightly so the body line from the top of the light like on the original bodywork isn't destroyed it'd look a bit better. I don't hate it at all though, just being a perfectionist.

Michael Dalton, a builder for the Flashpoint streamliner, posted this recently. Tire blew out at 427mph, debris strewn over more than a mile, driver walked away

I think I've read that some (most? all?) jet/rocket propelled cars use solid metal wheels which are not so prone to exploding. In fact it looks like the front wheels on that vehicle were solid. I know nothing about land speed vehicles, but I imagine that at 400 mph you're approaching the limit of the tire's ability to maintain propulsive traction. What would be the alternative for rubber tires on a torque-driven car at those speeds? Maybe a solid wheel with spikes or paddles or something?

These guys were pushing it when the tire failed, the record is a shade under 452mph. There are pretty serious regulations about damaging the salt pan they race on as well, anything that gouges into it is no bueno.

For those not familiar, LSR records at Bonneville are set with a first run, a backup run, and the record is the average between the two. Each run (at least for the big-classes, some slower classes run on the short course,) is set on a nine mile course, with the record time being taken as a flying mile speed during the last mile. To qualify as a record, the two-way average must be at least 1% faster than the previous record. Quarter-mile, second mile, flying mile entry speed and exit speed is also recorded, but is not part of the record. Note that this does not qualify for an FIA record, which requires the backup pass to be made within two hours, which is a significantly more difficult record. The absolute land speed records at Bonneville (and elsewhere,) starting going to turbojet and rocket cars in the early sixties, with a few wheel-driven records going to turboshaft cars before they were separated into their own classes, as well. The class structure for Bonneville racing is even more complex than NHRA classes, so I won't even begin to get into them. Suffice it to say that Goldenrod held the absolute piston-engine wheel-driven record for over 42 years, and held it's class record for 44. Poteet and Main's Speed Demon holds several class records, having been run with three or four different powerplants, as well as the fastest piston engine exit speed ever recorded. LSR is cool as gently caress.

Even a solid metal wheel is experiencing the same kind of forces as the flywheel on a drag racer, and those blow up in the most spectacular way when they let go.

I wonder how much the final drive ratio changes due to the diameter of the wheel increasing slightly with RPM. Probably not anything measurable, but a co-worker showed me a video of RC car tires "pizza cuttering" at high RPMs and now I'm imagining that happening on an actual car.
