You might think it's a long way down the street to the chemist, but that's just peanuts compared to gaming.

Sometimes gaming looks small enough to fit on a cat's collar but then you look closely at it and its like MIB where you zoom in and there is another universe in there.

It's weird thinking of all the huge gaming markets that are so disconnected from the kinds of games I play that I only know how huge they are from being told. Like sports games and the candy crush/peggle style of mobile game

There is an entire market of people buying and trading digital trading cards. Just, pictures of Star Wars characters or baseball players that you can look at on your phone. I have never even come across ads for it personally but it is a huge thing and it blows my mind.

My niece is in second grade and she says all anyone talks about is Fortnite. When I was that age I was still playing Atari.

When I was fourth or fifth grade was when Nintendo blew up. It’s all we ever talked about, but it was NES games in general, not just one game.

Pokemon came out after I got into high school. The closest reference points I have are like baseball cards, Golden Eye, and M:TG but they weren't nearly as huge time-sinks back then.

Oh I did have a friend who almost dropped out of high school because of Ultima Online. Still peanuts compared to WoW or Fortnite numbers.

That Dragon Quest thing is a myth though. I think Square Enix just releases them on weekends on their own to be responsible and avoid there actually being a law along those lines.

I mean I remember being in school and even talking about non-sports games was desperately uncool. Kids who would come over and play ff7 and smash bros had never even heard of video games once they set foot in class.

I imagine most schools are dealing with the 'fortnite problem' really poorly but I'm gonna admit I feel vindicated here

Well, that aligns with the vibes I was getting. Which was, like, "normal" kinda vibes.
I was at a wedding recently and there was a lot of Fortnite taunts going around. Mostly from some 12-ish kids but some of them caught on with older attendees.

This is a common misconception, the government didn't force them, they decided to do it on their own after reading stories about it in the papers. still means they were crazy popular tho.

I had a sewing class in middle school where the teacher liked me and my friend so we would just do our assignments super fast and then read stuff in game magazines. I think that's where I explained to him what Suikoden was while he was bragging about finally beating Ozma in FF9 (which I already knew because one of his friends told me about it but then swore me to secrecy because he was stoked to tell me).

I remember there was an assignment to make a patch that they'd put together with everyone else's and keep adding to over the years and mine was just a chocobo because there was a good picture of one in a magazine.

I don’t think anyone is really saying it’s a problem, just marveling that it is a whole video game thing that we, a community of people interested in video games, just do not engage with on that level.

There was a guy in my class who got MGS2 before me and I kept asking him questions about it because I couldn't get it until my birthday

Then I got mad at him because he started talking about a fat guy called "fatman" who skates around drinking wine/planting bombs and I was 100% sure he was messing with me. Tell me what actually happens!!!

e: there was an argument with another kid that ended with them yelling "YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT FINAL FANTASY 10"
