I don't think she was supposed to be autistic either, just heavily sheltered from the reality of the zombie apocalypse by her father.

She’s definitely autistic and the writer in an interview or commentary was talking about how much she sucks. I’ll have to track it down because I remember it being a talking point on Idle Thumbs (a podcast by campo santo guys who worked on season 1).

'cause in one scene shes having a kind of meltdown and is curled up in a ball and wringing her hands which is like, a common autism thing, and the way she kinda weirdly fails to relate to clementine is pretty autistic too I actually think you’re right I just think it’s funny that they were so cowardly about it that I didn’t pick it up at all while playing.

Also the Walking Dead franchise in general has a really disturbing underlying theme that in the zombie apocalypse the mentally ill and handicapped are burdens and should probably just be killed Like I do not think they do it on purpose but that is pretty much what always happens

It always struck me as weird that supposed adult and mature media shies away so hard from simply stating that a character is autistic, or even neurodivergent in any way. I get why children's cartoons wouldn't outright say it since I'm sure some network censor wouldn't allow it, but adult media just doesn't have that excuse. Come to think of it, I can't even recall any characters where the narrative just straight up says that they have autism. I guess Symmetra?

Okay without diving into 4 year old podcasts, the then ceo Kevin Bruner said in an interview she had something like ptsd and was meant to test the players compassion in an apocalyptic scenario.

Oh wait I just remembered one, gotta go grab a screenshot now. There's this time management game series called Heart's Medicine and the head surgeon is this guy who needs his meds or else he falls asleep and is dazed and iirc he can't get his meds because the hospital head stole all of the pharmacy's meds in order to get high in order to distract him from his father issues. ANYWAY, head surgeon is just this dude who is all like "I can only deal with 1 person at a time!" and so you're forced out of the surgical ward at the beginning because he refuses to take on 2 people at the same time and then his profile is just like "He is also autistic" and I'll post a screenshot later once I can get the game installed.

We all know full well that any kind of minor thing can set off the brigades. Imagine they said she's autistic openly and some bored prick with too little real problems to deal with decided to take offence to their depiction of it. Suddenly their Twitter is full of "you are depicting autism as a cripplinng disease, but in truth they are all gods children", "I wish your kid had autism so you would see where you went wrong" and "burn them at the stake and boycott their games".

Most depictions of autism in media are so loving stupid, like being on the spectrum makes you some kind of magical child savant who speaks in riddles. It's just bizarre.

I played Super Hang On on my 3DS this morning for the first time since I played it as a 12 year old with their first console: the megadrive. Whenever I played it back then it was so crushingly tough and I would hit those BirdBird signs over and over. I would always run out of time around section 3 or 4 of Africa and fail equally poorly on the others. Today I made it to section 5 of Africa and nearly the end of the race

I don't remember who the the video was supposed to rebut but it was pretty eye opening compared to what I thought autistic people were like.

Shiiiiiit That loving sucks, here's to hoping you'll be painless sooner than later. Just remember that you went through the surgery, you made it, and now you just have to recover, and for every second you spend recovering, that's another second closer to feeling well again. Good luck and I hope everything goes well.

I don't remember who the the video was supposed to rebut but it was pretty eye opening compared to what I thought autistic people were like. It's functionally an issue of like, relating to the world around you, so obviously there's levels with that. I have issues figuring out where people are coming from sometimes and can get defensive, but I'm fully capable of realizing other people are like, human. But with severe autism you just get screaming at any stimulus you comprehend as negative because you're incapable of understanding why things exist or how things are set-up. It's why there used to be the whole 'asperger's' diagnosis, since even if it's fundamentally the same issue the gulf between mild/moderate to severe is so vast in terms of, how capable a person is of functioning, that the ways of treating with it and dealing with it are very different.
