This is awesome. As if there is any other side to Republicans.

The hope is they'll be disenchanted with Republicans, especially depending on how Trump leaves office. In the best possible outcome he's impeached but doesn't go quietly and starts Trump TV railing about how the Republican party turned on him etc..

For real that chain way overextended itself though. Amazing that it happened the same month Mike Isabella's whole food group went under too. DC has this huge new mixed use development called the Wharf that opened up in SW DC, it's all luxury apartments, expensive restaurants and nowhere to park. Figure half the restaurants will be closed in 18 months. Yep, there's a Taylor Gourmet and a Mike Isabella joint down there.

I mean realistically they gentrified a couple of fairly lovely old seafood restaurants. That neighborhood was already wrecked beyond repair when the Feds bulldozed it in the 60s for a bunch of brutalist office buildings and then slapped an elevated expressway across it to boot.

If you have to put in some yuppie mixed use development that wasn't a bad place to do it. But yeesh that design.

There's a fairly funny article from a couple of months back revealing that the Trump workers all live in places like the Wharf and the new buildings in Navy Yard--they have to live in the faceless new "luxury" apartments in neighborhoods with no character because they'll get harassed everywhere else.

Apparently the Wharf is were DC trump administration supporters hang out as a safe space since it's away from the "thug" infested part of the DC.

But at least most of them are in unions so they aren't super hosed like other industries.

But unions are going to get more vulnerable soon due to some legislation that was passed recently.

The lovely thing is it gives precedent to whenever labor unions get on the table.

Union fees are now optional but it does not mean the non payer does not get Union benefits or representation: companies are saying that the only way they allow the union to exist is if all workers are in it.... So the non payers get in.

Those fees are collected and then whenever a strike is called or legal representation is needed , the funds come from these fees.

So what happens is that employees join, decide not to pay fees and ... Become leeches from the fund bucket.

Its like if someone decided not to pay for car insurance but still gets coverage if they are in a wreck. The very definition of fygm .

Yeah basically it was cutting off the money side of the union which is used to fund things like training or strike funds.

This allows CHUDs to enjoy benefits the union fought for without having to pay the monthly dues.

The average cost per month of union dues is $46 but you still have right wing types in government whining about this.

Look at this nasty scab website making a unintentional case for unions (Your cost will be such much higher with a union)

The site even whines about how the union worker on average has to pay $400 in union dues.

Would you rather work for $29 a hour in total benefits with no protection from arbitrary punishment/firing or $46 a hour with having protection from management scum?

People who don't pay their union dues are pretty horrible especially given the massive amount of benefits obtained for a small monthly cost.

In recent years, "yellow" unions have been making inroads here as well; classical unions are red and they will fight for you, literally. the yellow unions will only pay out union dole and dont give a poo poo if you get fired illegally

This is ultimately the way forward. Things are going to get very bad for labor in this country, but they used to be that way too. Unions didn't have legal protections in the Gilded Age, either. They had to take matters into their own hands, and that's probably what is going to have to happen again.

Also, they're much quicker to not pay out based on you not doing what they tell you to do - and IIRC, some of them had to get bailed out because their dues were nowhere near what was required to actually pay their *customers* the moment capitalism shat its pants.
