That neighborhood was already wrecked beyond repair when the Feds bulldozed it in the 60s for a bunch of brutalist office buildings and then slapped an elevated expressway across it to boot. If you have to put in some yuppie mixed use development that wasn't a bad place to do it. But yeesh that design. There's a fairly funny article from a couple of months back revealing that the Trump workers all live in places like the Wharf and the new buildings in Navy Yard--they have to live in the faceless new "luxury" apartments in neighborhoods with no character because they'll get harassed everywhere else.

Apparently the Wharf is were DC trump administration supporters hang out as a safe space since it's away from the "thug" infested part of the DC.

Union fees are now optional but it does not mean the non payer does not get Union benefits or representation: companies are saying that the only way they allow the union to exist is if all workers are in it.... So the non payers get in. Those fees are collected and then whenever a strike is called or legal representation is needed , the funds come from these fees. So what happens is that employees join, decide not to pay fees and ... Become leeches from the fund bucket. Its like if someone decided not to pay for car insurance but still gets coverage if they are in a wreck. The very definition of fygm .

in the early eighties the boss of one of the big danish union associations said "we've prevailed hellishly", in other words they've done so well that the youngins don't appreciate the rights that their elders fought for. In recent years, "yellow" unions have been making inroads here as well; classical unions are red and they will fight for you, literally. the yellow unions will only pay out union dole and dont give a poo poo if you get fired illegally
