Shirobako is an anime about an anime studio. It has work related drama but it's pretty optimistic about the whole endeavor of a group of people coming together to make art, and has some really great jokes, so I'd call it fairly upbeat overall, even if it isn't afraid to let the characters get into the weeds.

I found Shirobako to be super stressful but I had just been laid off at the time so I was in a weird headspace. It's a great show, though!

so, Makai Tensho. A quick google tells me there's no official English translation of the book, and there's like a bajillion adaptations, with the most easy to access ones in English being either the Sonny Chiba movie from 1981 or Ninja Resurrection.

which of those two should I go for, or are there any better versions I'm missing?

e: to complicate matters further, I have no idea how to find the Chiba movie without buying a copy on Amazon, and Ninja Resurrection is apparently infamous for being horrible.

Ken Ishikawa has a manga adaptation of it

You should watch the anime anyway and tell us how it really is because as I understand it one of the reasons it's so maligned is that when it was first released it was marketed as a sequel to the movie Ninja Scroll and people felt betrayed

NANI?

It's actually really bad all on its own merit, also plenty of rape!

Which is a shame because a lot of people who worked on it also worked on Giant Robo.

I mean, it's slightly maligned for that, but it's mostly maligned for having Genocyber-level gore and tons of rape. Like, the reviews for it are outraged enough by it that I would have assumed the rec was you having a laugh at my expense if there weren't other, better-regarded versions.

I never read any reviews of it so you should read the Ishikawa one and it's sequel, Yagyu Jubei Must Die!

Seiyuu's Life is similar, only for a group of voice actors in the industry. And has a Special Guest Star VA playing themselves in each episode.

I'm just disappointed it never had Norio Wakamoto :sigh:.

Seconding this. It's about a single dad learning better how to raise his young daughter through the magic of delicious cooking, basically. It's extremely adorable and heartwarming while also being about an adult going through life stuff.

It's a horror movie about a woman having a psychotic break, generally shot in such a way that you're strongly inhabiting her perspective, and among other really disturbing scenes includes one where she participates as an actress in a simulated rape scene, and starts perceiving it as real halfway through.

So yes, that would probably be a bad idea.

Kill La Kill is really more of a straightforward Shonen action, but it might be what you're looking for. It has a sense of anything-goes madcap energy to it that I find a lot of fun.

The usual caveats apply; Kill La Kill contains heavy fanservice and a couple incidents of implied sexual abuse that are not handled well. I like it a lot but know what you're in for.

Maybe check out Flip Flappers if you haven't? It's not very sword-ey exactly, but the action scenes are pretty bonkers good (though a couple episodes might be too light on the action for your taste, not sure). It's a short, sweet, unique, trippy-as-hell take on the magical girl genre.

She doesn't have a sword in it though, not until the literal last few episodes.

Could try Devil Hunter Yohko, the first ep is a bit soft core porny but it settles down after that

Also the original Project A-ko movie, all the sequels suck though.

Super obscure pick: Phantom Quest Corps which I don't remember anything about.
