Bad recruits is a good way to sink a run during the early game. Money at that point is severely limited so your first few recruits need to be worth their cost or they’ll either die or just be dead weight in fights. Like I said in my last post, those 3 wildmen I got in the first 10 days made a huge difference just because they could hit things so well and don’t tire out very fast. Early game brigands don’t stand a chance against them, and even a dozen skeleton auxiliaries couldn’t stop them. Usually I can’t take on more than a 6 or so skeletons until much later.

No one is going to deny that this game snowballs pretty hard. If anything, it needs a system to detect when the player has just gotten crushed in a fight so that losing five bros and two suits of heavy (>200) armor on day 45 isn't an effective game over.

I play ironman and I'm still a huge cheater. I click on a town, hire all of the recruits and see the ones I like. I then alt-f4 before I leave the city/the game saves! Hooray!

vyelkin posted:I'll probably stop savescumming recruits at all once the DLC drops since you'll now be able to give bros a trial before hiring them. To me it makes no sense that you just hire someone without even making them demonstrate they can hit the broad side of a barn first. I think the trial just lets you see their traits, not their starting star rolls and stars. At least, that's how I read it

Ironman, beginner economy, expert combat is by far my favorite way to play this game and I wish I'd tried it earlier.

As much as I tend to hate level scaling, there should be at least an option for it or something.

Forest battles are easy if you have enough ranges to bait the AI into attacking. They're full of choke points so you can set up lots of 2 or 3 vs 1 frontlines in your favour and just destroy the enemy while half their force mills around uselessly in the background. I do really wish the battle ui had a mode that shades impassable hexes red though, because that poo poo is really hard to parse.

I prefer squires and militia men but those deserters still look tempting at times. They, thieves, and killers have an event problem as well - you can get a noble company after them, and if you don't just let them kill you have to fight them. It's really lovely if you get them too early to hang against a handful of nobles.

So I keep getting tons and tons of retired soldiers (lovely), militiamen (usually lovely) adventurous nobles (often lovely), and sellswords (can be decent) and almost no squires or hedge knights. Is the spawn rate really low for the latter or what? I'm on day 50 and haven't seen a single hedge knight.

So I got this game a while ago. Doing ironman runs, I've had three get beyond the early game so far. 1st run ended in a swamp, shot to death by brigand marksmen. 2nd one ended when I decided to take part in a siege in the noble war. Turned out that I chose the side whose troops sucked rear end. 3rd one ended against 13 goblins. Had to rush them cos there's no way to win at range. Then my decently armored and experienced frontline just got taken apart by the cackling little fucks. Game's fun, just wish that I knew how to fight anything more threatening than brigands, zombies and angry monkies without even well-equipped and leveled guys dying like flies. Also how to get archers that don't suck.

I kinda like having lovely recruits to start, but it does make me end my game earlier. My current game i've got maybe 5 decent bro's, everyone else is a meatshield with either a board of wood strapped to them, or a bow taped to their hands to make people run to me.

Figured I'd try a run with 4 archers with Crippling Strikes, and have my frontline use Executioner. Would crossbows be better than normal bows for this? Also yeah, I know undead is gonna be an issue.

Bow's will be better, stack them with overwhelm too. If you come up against armour you can just slam one target together.

You might consider turning off ironman for a while, at least until you have a better grasp on the game. Battle Brothers can be quite difficult and it can be very easy to send any run into a death spiral.

Which makes sense, since they're supposed to be these super imposing figures that really stand out from the crowd. Also hey, don't diss retired soldiers. They make for great polearm wielders where the low fatigue and health aren't such an issue. Their melee skills are consistently pretty high. They're budget swordmasters, basically. I’d personally like if they made location have more effect on terrain. I’d like if graveyards had headstones and a desaturated color for the ground, or old forts have crumbling walls, fortifications have little wood barricades, just little stuff like that to suggest that the place you went to actually exists. I think it’s weird that forts and graveyards only exist on maps and in your imagination.

Pro tip: You only get acid on you if you hit them from an adjacent hex. Here's what my (so far only) fight with lindwurms looked like; Shield bros should just tank them, doing nothing except keep shield wall up. The rest will stay out of reach of the bitey end of the wurms and either whale on the tail end with polearms, or just shoot at whichever part they can. I don't know if I was exceedingly lucky or lindwurms don't have very good accuracy, but if things go as well as they did for me in that fight, you should remain mostly unscathed. Depends mostly on how good your shield bros are defensively, I guess. God drat that is a nice spear. I have a unique one too, but it's not nearly as impressive.

Yeah those betrayal jobs are rarely worth it unless it's a huge chunk of cash early in the game. I might piss off a town in the very early game for like 1k+ extra crowns because that can bump you up the power curve quite substantially but sometimes they only offer an extra 2-300 and that's totally not worth the hassle.

That's also a very nice chopper. I can't exactly complain about my overall situation, there was a point way earlier where I was complaining about a dearth of unique weapons, but then the game started handing them out like candy. Just realised in one battle the other day that I had all of three bros on the field without a unique weapon.
