My Cousin in Law bought a new SUV with his mom's help to impress his future wife. It is way more than he can afford but he is a little emperor and his mom wants grandkids.

This 80 year old at his workplace got mad at seeing it, and keyed it to the tune of several thousand USD in damages. (Can't just take it to a local shop as it's a foreign luxury car).

The guy admitted to doing it and said he'd give them a few hundred RMB. They went to the police station to complain (it was on camera) but because the guy was old and had more guanxi they said they wouldn't do anything to him. Apparently police in china are notoriously averse to getting involved in any crime committed by the elderly as they don't want to be blamed if the person gets hurt or dies in custody.

It's all extra strange because my Father in law is a Party official (not just a member) in that same city, and has tried to throw his weight around, but doesn't have enough Guanxi apparently to make the police give a poo poo.

So basically they're poo poo out of luck. I half expect the old dude to just key it again after they fix it.

The Korean version is equally impressive (watching old men slap cops without any repercussions) to tragic (Korean Air Flight 801) crashing into the side of a hill because the first officer and flight engineer didn't want to point out the Captain's mistake (approaching a few hundred feet too low).

Yeah I don't even know what I'd do in a situation like that.

I'd be so mad. They can't do anything to the guy though. He's older and more senior at the workplace.

Maybe they can hire some thugs to pressure him. That's what the CCP would do.

An academic gets invited to speak at a Chinese University and things go as you'd expect

https://jamiemetzl.com/censored-in-china/

quote:

That night, I was invited to a hastily-organized dinner in a private room with one of the conference organizers, a man connected to the host academic center administration who seemed far more a political operative than an academic. I assumed he was a political commissar embedded in the university. After the initial pleasantries, the pressure campaign began. He said that he had reviewed my notes and was concerned that some of my critiques of Chinese government positions would be too sensitive given today’s political climate. He asked if they could provide edits or if I would amend my remarks to eliminate those references. I responded that I had come to China because I firmly believe that a free and open exchange of ideas, even critical ones, between Chinese and American scholars was essential to finding a way forward for both of our countries. I made clear that I had come to speak but also to listen, and that I planned to do both with an open mind and in the spirit of friendship. I would speak honestly and respectfully, I said, but would not be willing to censor myself or be censored.

If I made the changes, my dinner host then said, he could arrange for me to be invited to other conferences in China. I thanked him for the offer and told him that my travel schedule was already far too crazy and was not seeking additional invitations. I reiterated that I had come to China only to exchange ideas because I believe that doing so is so critical to our collective future. He then said they were so appreciative of my visit they would like to make sure I was comfortable by taking me out that night for massages.

This is ridiculous and I would like to double check with you guys.

I’m Taiwanese. My new neighbor is Chinese, just came from China and doesn’t speak much English. After saying that I was from Taiwan, his attitude switched 180 and became nasty towards me.

I have cute Taiwanese stickers (like a bear, the flag, etc) on my car and a few small Taiwanese flags stabbed in the ground in my garden and backyard.

Today I got a cease and desist letter saying I have to remove all my affiliation with Taiwan or else he’ll serve me with legal action. Presumably by a lawyer because it’s in English.

I have a security footage of him walking into our garden, taking out the little flags and surveying them. He put them back but this really freaks me out.

Christ, not China, but that reminds me of the time I got this panicked call from one of my Somalian friends asking me to come over at like 11pm. Turns out her lovely ex husband had left some legal looking papers in her mailbox on the day that the state sent in some papers regarding their child support arrangement. It was specifically worded to make her (a relatively poor English speaker) believe that basically the old country’s values were still in effect and he was going to prevail upon the courts to give him the kids, per these passages in the child support papers.

Took me 90 minutes to read over everything and explain to her that the passage he was referring to simply said that the state couldn’t represent her in any court battle, should one occur. Then it took another 45 minutes to explain to her how seriously loving illegal this sort of intimidation tactic was and how his established history in this entire matter (they divorced because he pulled a knife on her in front of the kids) was going to make a judge detonate at this rear end in a top hat if given half a chance.

Long story short the judge did detonate and to the best of my knowledge he is still in prison.

https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2018/09/28/652218318/thousands-could-be-deported-as-government-targets-asylum-mills-clients

quote:

NPR's Planet Money has learned that more than 13,500 immigrants, mostly Chinese, who were granted asylum status years ago by the U.S. government, are facing possible deportation.

As the Trump administration turns away asylum-seekers at the border under more restrictive guidance issued by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Executive Office for Immigration Review are considering stripping asylum status from immigrants who won it years ago.

Immigration officials are moving against these immigrants in a sweeping review that federal authorities say is related to a 2012 investigation into asylum mills. During that probe, federal prosecutors in New York rounded up 30 immigration lawyers, paralegals and interpreters who had helped immigrants fraudulently obtain asylum in Manhattan's Chinatown and in Flushing, Queens. The case was dubbed Operation Fiction Writer.

The federal government says the people convicted during Operation Fiction Writer had helped more than 3,500 immigrants, most of them Chinese, win asylum. Authorities accused them of dumping boilerplate language in stories of persecution, coaching clients to memorize and recite fictitious details to asylum officers, and fabricating documents to buttress the fake asylum claims.

In the years after the prosecutions, immigration officials have been reviewing those asylum cases to determine which clients lied on their asylum applications and therefore should be deported.
