With the reasons why they repealed it, couldn’t they had just raised the minimum wage up to $15 or something instead of just fully repealing it?

Schumer is extremely persuasive evidence that Democrats are nothing but a controlled opposition party.

Eggplant Squire
Aug 14, 2003

Schumer is probably a bigger problem than Trump frankly due to his position within the Democratic party. He's either politically incompetent on a practically unheard of scale or actively a Republican mole. There's not really much effective difference and him being beaten by a Republican would probably be better in the long run since his majority leadership will be a disaster if the Democrats beat the odds and take back the Senate and there's no other way he's giving up that job.

The only thing keeping me from 100% thinking they are controlled opposition is a controlled opposition at least tries to pretend it isn't. "Democrats need a 2/3 vote to confirm a judge while Repuicans need 1/2" is too stupid for a compromised person.

DON'T POST IN THE ELECTION THREAD UNLESS YOU :love::love: JOE BIDEN
Reminder that by Schumer's own account his political compass is literally a family he made up that have the ideas he just kind of assumes they'd have. Also when he meets actual human beings who are roughly the same demographics as his imaginary couple he's openly dissapointed that they don't match his deal.

You can't make this poo poo up:

quote:

Liberal élitism, he said, as he stirred Sweet ’N Low into his tea with a chopstick, alienates middle-income families from the Party. “Middle-class people don’t think everybody should have to drive a tiny little car to achieve improvement in global warming,” he said. Invoking opponents of expanding the tuition tax credit to the middle class, he went on, “If we listened to the New York Times editorial board, we’d have twenty-one votes in the Senate.”

Schumer says that he is accompanied everywhere he goes by two imaginary middle-class friends, who advise him on all manner of middle-class concerns. Their names, until recently, were Joe and Eileen O’Reilly. “For the book’s sake, we wanted them to be more national,” Schumer said, “so they became the Baileys.” The Baileys live in Massapequa, in Nassau County, a town that is invariably known on Long Island as “Matzoh-Pizza.” The Baileys are both forty-five years old: Joe works for an insurance company, Eileen is a part-time employee at a doctor’s office. They worry about terrorism, and about values, and they are patriots—“Joe takes off his cap and sings along with the national anthem before the occasional Islanders game,” Schumer wrote. He elaborated, “They’re not ideologues. They’re worried about property taxes. It’s the tax they hate. And that’s what Democrats don’t get.” He has also drafted the Baileys in defending the C.I.A.’s human-intelligence program: “Had Joe and Eileen been in the room after the hum-int screwup, they would not have indulged in the blame game, gutted the human-intelligence program, or weakened America.”

The Baileys, Schumer said, sometimes dine out—not often, because of the cost—and they like Chinese. Which raised the question: What would the Baileys eat, if they were here at Hunan Dynasty? “The more conventional stuff,” Schumer said, “but they’re with it.”

They’re with it?

“I mean, they’re not not with it.” Schumer looked at a plate of steamed chicken and vegetables, and said, “They wouldn’t order that. They would order kung pao chicken.”

It was suggested to Schumer that he is a little bit weird. He acknowledged this to be true. “They’re real for me,” he said. “I love the Baileys.”

As swing voters, Schumer said, “the Baileys were very anti-Hillary when she ran in 2000, but they voted for her in 2006.” He went on, “They like Rudy. It depends on how he plays it. If Rudy continues to adhere to the right-wing Republican line, just cutting taxes for the wealthy, he won’t get their vote.”

It turns out, Schumer said, as he ate an almond cookie, that there are some actual Baileys in Massapequa, and he once met a couple of them. Mrs. Bailey was a kind woman, “very nice, a nice lady,” but the actual Mr. Bailey was a Republican. Even worse, Schumer said, he had a goatee. “Joe Bailey would never have a goatee.”

Schumer is just so incredibly bad in his leadership position it's almost unreal. He is a bigger wall to progress than pretty much any Republican. Unless you really are controlled opposition why in gods name would your intention be to handicap your own party especially when you know Republicans would just knock it back down to majority confirmation the very instant they were in a position to do so again.

E: Oh yeah I almost forgot about his literal make believe Republican family he spends every moment trying to appease into voting for shitdems, what a loving dumbass.

Reading through the Trump thread's podcast derail and it seems like the majority opinion is Pod Save America is worth listening to/good, and Chapo is at best only worth listening to if you want more content, but that the hosts are all assholes and thus should be disregarded :decorum:. That's the perfect distillation of that thread's opinion on any given issue. The technocratic wonks with ideas that have repeatedly failed are more worth listening to other than the people with stronger opinions and beliefs cause that second group is too uncouth.

It was at least nice to see Citations Needed as the overall most recommended podcast, since it's fantastically researched an edited, and is just a left as Chapo (just in a more professional package).

Chuck Schumer has never had to be a competent politician. Every step of his political career was built on the party machine giving him favorable treatment and better opportunities because he was cozy with moneyed interests and therefore was an excellent fundraiser.

Yeah, I think Citations Needed is a very good thing to recommend to liberals in general, since it does a good job of explaining a lot of the left's point of view in a non-hostile manner.

(I would actually argue that the CN guys are more left-wing than the Chapo ones, overall)
