He means the engine driving the supercharger. The big engine is an original Hemi, yeah, but there's a second boxer 4 in front of it whose sole purpose seems to be driving the supercharger.

The heads look wrong to be any car engine I'd recognize, and airplane engines are usually aircooled too. Might be some old stationary power thing.

I don't see any intake runners, maybe it's got sleeve valves or is a 2 stroke or something?

I think you might be right on it being 2 stroke yeah. Some random stationary engine sounds right. The more I look at it the weirder it gets though. Is the boxer driving the water pump for the hemi while the fuel pump is driven by the hemi? I guess the hemi is fuel injected as well. Early drag racing was wild.

Edit: Those look like AN fittings on the hp fuel line too. Didn't know they where used in cars in the 50's

A great deal of the hot rodding movement was based on surplus aircraft bits after the war.

Like you, I assume that the Hemi is injected, but where the hell are the injectors and throttle body? Between the blower and the engine? Guess that makes sense if the blower is driven independently.

I'll set the building on fire
I'd guess it's carburated and the carb is between the supercharger and manifold out of sight. Looks to be a mechanical fuel pump driven off the water pump on the main engine there, with the pump on that pulley up there for air-water charge cooling.

I wouldn't be hugely suprised if there wasn't a throttle body on the hemi, you just blipped the throttle on the blower motor. It's a drag car, so it only needs two settings "more or less able to move slowly under its own power" and "full throttle".

Hilborn constant flow injection was commonly used at the time. I'm guessing it has something similar to this http://hilborninjection.com/product/short-4-port-scoop-style-injector-for-6-71-and-8-71-blowers-3-bore/

I had to go hunt this one down:
https://raceenginedesign.co.uk/the-manic-beattie/
4-wheel drive
1700 cc Cosworth BDT.
400 bhp
650 kg
25 psi gauge boost with a turbine driven turbo.
Tyre burnouts are conducted at 13 psi boost in first gear but timed runs, for 2005 at least, used the higher 25 psi boost limit, manually selected from the dashboard.

Holy poo poo.

If I’m reading that right, there is no turbocharger, they’re feeding compressor bleed air from the jet starter directly into the engine (or intercooler?) The writing is a bit contradictory and unclear.

It looks to be an old piston-port 2-stroke with a giant magneto, probably 350-700cc. I'm guessing it's a small marine engine like you'd find in an outboard motor.

Lower and wider is never a bad thing on a Reliant 3-wheeler.
I didn't read the title, and it took me a minute to figure out what the hand lever on the gear stick was.
Are those training wheels I see under the front end, to either side of the front wheel?
edit: may just be part of the suspension

Also, drat that thing is loud in the inside.
