It's not anime related at all but if it's art references you're looking for, the Mirrodin setting of Magic the Gathering is entirely made of metal, and there's over a thousand cards with art depicting parts of that setting at this point.

I'm looking fro some VN recommendations, since I've gotten onto kind of a streak of playing them.

Things I've liked:
999/Virtue's Last Reward
Ace Attorney
DanganRonpa

I generally like VNs that have some kind of gameplay/choice system. If it's not going to have any real interaction, I'd rather just read a book.
I don't really care what the genre is in particular, though I guess a lot of the ones I like skew towards sci-fi and/or mystery.

To be honest I can't think of that many worthwhile gameplay-focused VNs that you haven't already listed, so you might be out of luck on that one. Little Busters! (Key highschool romance/mystery/drama) on Steam does have a lot of minigames but they are pretty basic and ultimately completely inconsequential to completing the game. Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception is on the PS4 as a SRPG thing that I've heard is pretty decent, though I haven't played it

Ever17 is by the same writer as 999/VLR/ZTD so that is probably worth looking at, but while it features a ton of choices/paths it, again, does not really have any sort of gameplay beyond reading the story.

Higurashi/Umineko have even less gameplay and choices than any of the above but in terms of murder mysteries like Danganronpa and Ace Attorney they are on another level so I'd recommend them just the same.

There is a thread in Games that has more overall discussion, if you're interested in trying there.

As long as it has choices it's generally also fine for me. What I want to avoid is things like World End Economica where it's just an LN fed to me a couple lines at a time. Choose Your Own Adventure Book fed to me a few lines at a time is enough to keep me going.

I think someone mentioned Ever17 to me before, so I'll probably at least check that out. I'll also probably check out that games thread, thanks.

The House in Fata Morgana is a step forward for VNs as a whole IMO. Absolutely stellar, and genuinely well paced too. It does have some choices in it, though they come only after a lengthy period without any. Still, chiming in with it as a general rec.

AnoHito posted:

Ever17 is a little rough on the other hand, pacing wise. Remember11 is another one by the same author - its ending is pretty unfinished, but in terms of atmosphere it's my favorite in the Uchikoshi stable. Lots of choices, lots of twists, and it's got a nice snowy atmosphere. Maybe it'd be better to save for winter actually.

If you want the detective aspects of Phoenix Wright but incredibly edgy and gory, the Kara no Shoujo series is good. It really is edgy enough that if you're feeling even a bit "ehhhh" after reading that it probably wouldn't be worth your time. The gameplay is genuinely difficult (and in one particular case completely unreasonable) but quite fun for a bit.

Symphonic Rain is nicely morose, and has a minigame where you play music with the keyboard. It's actually really fun, I found myself just going back to play some of the songs once in a while completely irrespective of the story. The plot changes a bit depending on whether you're good or bad at the game, but I don't know if it's more advanced than "oh you get a bad ending if you play bad".

There's also a free VN on steam called Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius. It's got a pretty solid TBS attached to it, and I remember having quite a bit of fun with it years back. It's a sci-fi game where you're the captain of a ship. Only reservation I have in particular is that its continuation, which comes after a huge cliffhanger, is apparently short and also quite pricey.

Corpse Party is also pretty good, especially for the scary month. I did start using a walkthrough around halfway through though, so the gameplay didn't hugely land for me. There's a couple super involved bad endings that I appreciated.

Sorry if this is just a big block of stuff thrown on your lap, but I figured it'd be good to cover a range of tones and genres. World End Economica's translation is also very bad, or was when I first tried to play it at least. All of these should be much easier to read.

Maybe the recent remake features ample rewrites and makes it less skeevy, but the original at least was extremely repugnant and reprehensible and I would not recommend it. It does have an ambitious story progression system but it's hard for me to care that much about it to praise it for it by the end.

How grimdark is Goblin Slayer exactly?

I liked the manga but the "goblins are rapists"-theme was a bit heavy handed.

e: what I liked about the manga was how Guts-from-berserk-like the main character is. Just a single-minded, driven dude who is constantly in over his head. Are there any other shows like that?

Votoms is an old mecha series but it might be up your alley, mechs are tanksized in it and theres an episode where a biker gang with some molotovs and a few shotguns nearly destroy the protags mech, mechs arent really overpowered in the setting or anything, so it still has that in over his head vibe.

go watch VOTOMS and Armor Hunter Mellowlink right the gently caress now

e: the latter is more what you're looking for, insanely badass foot soldier going on a revenge quest against mech pilots armed with nothing but an anti-tank rifle and his own massive brass balls, but VOTOMS is in the same universe and has some of the same stuff going on with Chirico

I Failed At Anime 2022
There is a lot more around it than just that but you might like the character of Randel Oland in Pumpkin Scissors, the anime is not spectacular but I do recommend watching at least the first fight it opens with and then reading the manga if you're interested in continuing at all. The whole team is really in over their heads and up against some overwhelming forces but they tend to be more about politics and corruption but Randel's fights boil that down to a much simpler man vs tank (or armored train, etc) spectacle.

Parasyte, for sure. Excellent horror, genuinely good comedy, fascinating and grotesque action scenes, kinda weak but ultimately acceptable finale arc with a villain that looks straight out of DBZ.

The anime adaptation from a few years ago was widely considered good too, I believe, though people cringed at the dubstep in it iirc

It does have the most iconic scene in it lovingly animated though

There's the 1969 anime Dororo, which is about a man whose father sold his body parts to 48 demons for power and to reclaim his body he must kill all 48 demons, and he just sort of hunts and fights demons in general. If watching a super old anime isn't your style it's getting a remake next year

So far, through admittedly only two episodes, the Goblin Slayer anime is a little less grimdark than its manga counterpart. Stuff that's pretty explicit in the manga are mostly implicit in the anime. You know what's happening but the anime doesn't show as much as the manga does. That said the story is pretty much the same so far, albeit a bit rushed by comparison. A lot of GS's grimdark horribleness is frontloaded, so they seem to be trying to fast forward past a lot of it to get to the later chapters that's more about Goblin Slayer hanging out with the full party with Priestess, Elf, Dwarf, and Draconian.

But of course, it is still early days.
